NBC Shuffles Fall 2025 Schedule With NBA, New Comedy Block
The addition of the NBA to NBC's primetime lineup next season will bring about some changes to the network's schedule — but the network is also making a few moves independent of that, including the launch of a new comedy block. NBC, which last had rights to the NBA in 2002, is turning over Tuesday nights to pro basketball when the league's season tips off on Oct. 21. A second night of NBA games will follow on Sundays in early 2026, after NBC's NFL commitment ends. The NBA additions — Jeff Bader, NBCUniversal Entertainment's president of program planning strategy, told reporters the NBA is 'our biggest new show in the fall' — will reduce the footprint of the network's entertainment programming next season and were a big reason why NBC canceled five series on May 9. More from The Hollywood Reporter Why 'Suits LA' Was One and Done 'Krapopolis,' 'Grimsburg' and 'Universal Basic Guys' Extended at Fox Roundball Rocked: With NBA Return Looming, NBC Purges Scripted Roster The October start for the league is also leading to something of a two-track schedule for NBC in the fall. Two-hour editions of The Voice and the Jimmy Fallon-led new unscripted series On Brand will air on Tuesday nights in September and early October, with On Brand also airing a second episode on Fridays to start the season. When the NBA starts, the Tuesday Voice will go away and On Brand will run on Friday nights only. November will bring another change: NBC will launch a pair of one-hour comedy blocks on Mondays and Fridays, anchored by second-year shows St. Denis Medical (Monday) and Happy's Place (Friday). They'll be paired with … shows to be determined. The network has picked up The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins, starring Tracy Morgan and Daniel Radcliffe and executive produced by Morgan's 30 Rock co-star Tina Fey. It also has a pair of comedy pilots in Stumble, a mockumentary about a junior college cheerleading squad from writers Liz and Jeff Astrof; and an untitled show from Rutherford Falls creator Sierra Teller Ornelas and fellow writers Jackie Kaliiaa and Bobby Wilson about the staff of a Native community center in Oakland, California. NBC will choose two of those three to join St. Denis Medical and Happy's Place in the late fall. The network has also renewed two first-year dramas, Brilliant Minds and The Hunting Party, for full second seasons. Medical drama Brilliant Minds will return to the 10 p.m. Monday spot it held last fall, while The Hunting Party, a crime procedural, will follow Law & Order: SVU on Thursday nights. The Wednesday all-Chicago slate and Thursday's two-hour Law & Order block remain intact. The lone remaining show on NBC's bubble, Grosse Pointe Garden Society, is still awaiting word on its future. After November NBC plans to ride with its schedule for the remainder of the season, save for the NFL/NBA swap on Sundays and something to fill the break between Voice cycles on Monday nights. The network will debut Surviving Earth, its natural history series follow-up to The Americas, sometime next season but hasn't set its spot on the schedule yet. 'We'll always be looking for other opportunities [in development], but the best thing that can happen to us is that all these shows work, and we can actually go back to having some full-season dramas,' Bader said. 'One of the things that you know, we're the reason that you're seeing these sophomore shows. Brilliant Minds only had 13 episodes in its first season. The Hunting Party only had 10 episodes. We need to give these full seasons and really lean into them to really get them established.' The Tuesday NBA games will be regional, with an 8 p.m. ET tipoff for viewers in the eastern half of the country and an 8 p.m. PT game for those out west. Both contests will stream live on Peacock across the country. NBC's fall lineup is below; all times are ET. NBCUniversal Has Hoop Dreams As Sports Set To Dominate Upfronts
Last year, it was movies. This year, it seems, it's all sports. The Upfronts kicked off at Radio City Music Hall with NBC reminding advertisers that it will soon have NBA basketball. The company scored the first basket at the three-day event that will likely be dominated by live sports with the news that Michael Jordan, arguably the greatest basketball player of all time, had signed up to be a special contributor to its NBA coverage. More from Deadline NBC Sets 3-Part Rollout Of Fall 2025 Schedule Dominated By Sports & Unscripted As NBA Joins, 'Voice' Shrinks, 'Hunting Party' & 'St. Denis' Move Seth Meyers Takes Swipes At Versant & Loss Of Hoda Kotb, Lester Holt At NBCU Upfront: "One Of The Nice Things About NBC Is Consistency" 'Wicked' Concert Special Set For NBC And Peacock Ahead Of Sequel's November Theatrical Bow 'Sports is definitely having a moment in the industry and, God knows, you'll hear the word 'sports' ten-thousand times this week, how some sports are moving to streaming or other platforms are adding a day or two to their schedule,' said Mark Marshall, Chairman, NBCUniversal Global Advertising & Partnerships. But Donna Langley, whose team just put together its first fall schedule (sort of) that includes primetime basketball (RIP: The Voice on Tuesdays, mostly), said that she hopes its $2.5B annual deal will have a positive impact on the rest of its programming. Langley, Chairman, NBCUniversal Entertainment & Studio, said, 'Every game will be a new event, a weekly tentpole that maximizes the impact of the league across our platforms and delivers a sizable audience watching in real time for our advertising partners. By adding NBA games to the schedule, we'll build on decades of sports programming on NBC and create a halo effect around the entire entertainment schedule. So whether you're a Bravoholic, a cinephile, a sports fanatic, news junkie, or simply can't miss Weekend Update, our franchises offer something for everyone, which means our advertisers can, without question, reach the broadest possible audience.' NBC's October schedule features less than a third scripted programming with only one new series – Jimmy Fallon's marketing reality series On Brand, with The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins, starring Tracy Morgan and Daniel Radcliffe, who were on stage, being added at some point over the fall. There were a handful of other NBC stars on stage including David Alan Grier and Wendi McLendon-Covey from St. Denis Medical, which is returning for a second season, Reba McEntire, star of Happy's Place and a coach on The Voice, and S. Epatha Merkerson from Chicago Med. 'One of the many powers of this portfolio is the ability to build and maintain audiences season after season whether it's newer comedies like our show St. Denis Medical or iconic legacy franchises like Law & Order or Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, Chicago PD, Chicago Sanitation and Chicago Municipal Zone,' Grier joked. The Upfronts presentation leaned heavily on Peacock programming including The Office spinoff The Paper and Dig starring Amy Poehler. Poehler, who was joined on stage by her 'work husband' Tina Fey, said that production on the show, which reunites her with her Parks and Recreation cohort Mike Schur, starts this summer. The company showed a trailer for The Paper, which comes from The Office's Greg Daniels and Michael Koman, which featured The White Lotus star Sabrina Impacciatore as a female Michael Scott. 'You're going to get tired chasing my pretty little butt around with that camera,' she says in the clip. Oscar Nunez, who played Oscar Martinez in The Office, is back, this time in Toledo, Ohio. 'Oh, no, not again, I'm not agreeing to any of this. Don't you guys have enough after nine years, I'm starting over with another of these things,' Nunez's Martinez says in the trailer. 'I told Mr. Greg Daniels that if Oscar came back, he would probably be living in a more, bustling, cosmopolitan city. Greg heard me and moved Oscar to Toledo, Ohio, which has three times the population of Scranton, so it was nice to be heard,' joked Nunez. Domhnall Gleeson plays idealistic journalist Ned Sampson. 'Fans of The Office will be delighted to see Oscar back at work. Some older fans will look at me and be glad that Meredith is also coming back. That's a red hair joke,' said Gleeson. Elsewhere, Elizabeth Banks, Keke Palmer and Dakota Fanning were on stage to promote The Miniature Wife, The Burbs and All Her Fault, respectively. Banks, whose series is a marital comedy also starring Matthew Macfadyen, joked that her relationship with NBCU goes back to the time that she did a spot on Third Watch, which ran between 1999 and 2005, as well as an appearance on Law & Order: SVU, which Palmer also starred on when she was 12. 'Every person you see up here today, every performance, trailer or clip actors have prepared for you, brings us back to four little words, the mantra that greets us every day in the headquarters in Los Angeles: Above All Else: Entertain, and that's what we do best,' concluded Langley. The new comedies include "The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins," which stars Tracy Morgan as a disgraced former football player trying for image rehab. CBS taps 'Yellowstone' star: Luke Grimes' Kayce Dutton set for new 'Marshals' series Jimmy Fallon also hosts a new competition reality series, "On Brand," which sets up a marketing agency and tasks contestants to craft campaigns, reminiscent of what Donald Trump did in "The Apprentice." Van Jones praises Trump for 'very good' choice with new pardon czar pick
Former Obama advisor Van Jones praised President Donald Trump for his newly-appointed "pardon czar," Alice Marie Johnson. On Thursday, Trump appointed Johnson, a woman he pardoned during his first term, as "pardon czar" during a Black History Month event at the White House. Johnson had previously been convicted of nonviolent drug trafficking in Memphis, Tennessee and, after serving 21 years, her life sentence was commuted by Trump. Jones praised the president for this latest appointment as he spoke to liberal commentator Donny Deutsch on Monday's episode of the "On Brand" podcast. "He put Miss Alice Johnson – the formerly incarcerated Black woman who he freed while working with Kim Kardashian – he just put her in charge of pardons. That's huge," Jones said. "Somebody who has actually been incarcerated, been in the federal system, understands how the Department of Justice screws over people who should be coming home – some people who shouldn't come home – but a lot of people that should come home, and they get screwed by the pardon office. She's gonna fix that." Who Is Alice Marie Johnson, The Great-grandmother Trump Granted Clemency To? "As somebody who has worked on criminal justice, as you know, for 30 years, having someone who's a formerly incarcerated person in charge of going through all these pardons and making sure that people get a fair shot – I think that's a very good thing," he continued. Read On The Fox News App Deutsch quoted a post Jones had written in late January, when he said, "Trump's heart CAN be touched. He has been moved, many times, to help downtrodden individuals — whether in his employ or in federal prisons (First Step Act). So don't assume that moral appeals can never work with Trump. In the right forum and circumstances, they can and do." Jones stood by his words describing Trump's first term in office, saying that Trump brought formerly incarcerated individuals to the White House and allowed them to speak at press conferences. "I don't remember Biden or Obama or Clinton doing anything remotely like that." Alice Marie Johnson Calls For Trump To Pardon Nonviolent Drug Offenders, Praises 'Unsung Hero' Ivanka However, Jones still had criticism of Trump. "Now I think we are in a five-alarm fire and I would be radically, rabidly opposed to even my beloved Barack Obama doing this stuff. We have a system. It's not perfect, but it's designed to work a particular way so that you don't have a king, you don't have somebody who just has unchecked power, and he's just, you know, he's grabbing authorities that are not allowed," he said. Johnson has spoken positively about her role in Trump's administration, telling Fox News about how eager she is to get started. "I plan to fulfill the trust that the president has placed in me," Johnson said. "He's given me specific marching orders and, actually, I've been working on this nonstop since my release. This is really a continuation of the work that I've already been doing. I've brought many pardon cases before the president in the past and one thing I can say about President Trump [is], he was very interested in their families. He wanted to know if they have a solid reentry program in place."Original article source: Van Jones praises Trump for 'very good' choice with new pardon czar pick
