Salvadoran restaurant workers aid deputies injured during Compton ICE raids protests

Amid protests sparked by a weekend immigration enforcement operation in Los Angeles County, workers at a Salvadoran restaurant in Compton were seen helping injured deputies who had responded to the scene. Footage captured by stringer service shows at least three Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputies being treated by employees at Restaurante Y Pupuseria La Ceiba, a local Salvadoran eatery on East Alondra Boulevard. The deputies appeared to be suffering from protest-related injuries, including what seemed to be irritation from pepper spray. Video shows two deputies seated inside the restaurant while about four or five workers fanned their faces with plates and provided them with ice and poured a refreshing beverage—possibly water or a traditional drink—to rinse out their eyes and ease the discomfort. The circumstances of how or why the deputies ended up inside the restaurant remain unclear. However, reports the incident took place during protests in Compton that followed an Immigration and Customs Enforcement raid earlier in the day in the nearby city of Paramount. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department confirmed that around 11 a.m. Saturday, deputies were dispatched to the 6400 block of Alondra Boulevard in Paramount on reports of a large group blocking traffic—only a few blocks away from the restaurant. 'As deputies arrived, it appeared that federal law enforcement officers were in the area, and that members of the public were gathering to protest,' LASD said. 'The sheriff's department was not involved in any federal law enforcement operations or actions and responded solely for traffic and crowd control management.' United States Attorney Bill Essayli stated on social media that federal law enforcement operations are 'proceeding as planned this weekend in Los Angeles County' and advised that anyone who tries to interfere with their enforcement will be arrested and prosecuted. While the extent of the deputies' injuries was not immediately disclosed, the video ends with them reassembling their gear and appearing to return to their patrol vehicles. Mob wreaks havoc in downtown L.A., tagging buildings and trains as someone breathes fire

The crowd gathered at midnight at Washington Boulevard and Maple Avenue. It's unclear why dozens of people converged at the intersection just south of downtown Los Angeles, but some were dressed to party, wearing pink platform heels and cat ears, according to video shot by news outlet A man gulped from a jug filled with a flammable liquid that he spat onto a torch, throwing flames into the night sky. As a helicopter circled overhead, a man wearing a leather jacket clambered up a light pole, his feet perched on a street sign. He pulled out his phone and appeared to film himself talking into the camera. The crowd's attention turned to an A Line train, which had stopped along its route on Washington Boulevard. According to the footage, vandals within the crowd began spray-painting the train and hammering on the windows. The Los Angeles Police Department was alerted at 12:12 a.m. Sunday by a caller who said five male suspects had entered a train car and were vandalizing the interior, said Officer Kevin Terzes, an LAPD spokesperson. Video showed dozens of LAPD officers massed in a skirmish line across the street from the mob, gripping black and green riot guns that fire foam rounds. At 12:19 a.m., the LAPD received another call of people being "disruptive" on a train at Washington Boulevard and Trinity Street, Terzes said. The officer said no one was arrested in connection with either call. It wasn't clear whether, separately, the LAPD arrested anyone in the group shown on video spray-painting the facades of a Panda Express, Waba Grill, dialysis center and medical clinic. Some in the crowd posed for selfies next to a spray-painted LAPD cruiser. They cursed at the officers, hurled a firework and kicked at the police car as the officers drove away, according to the video. Train service was delayed about 20 minutes after about 50 people blocked southbound and northbound trains at Washington Boulevard and Maple Avenue at midnight, said Jose Ubaldo, a Metro spokesperson. Vandals spray-painted the exterior and interiors of the trains, but no passengers or Metro employees were hurt, Ubaldo said in a statement. He asked that anyone with information about the incident contact the LAPD at (800) 222-8477. Sign up for Essential California for news, features and recommendations from the L.A. Tesla catches fire, burns inside garage of L.A. County home

An investigation is underway after a Tesla parked inside the garage of a Los Angeles County home caught fire and burned overnight. Montebello firefighters were called to the 1400 block of Loma Road around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, when they found heavy smoke and fire coming from the garage. Video from the scene showed a Tesla and another vehicle parked inside the garage as the fire was burning. Firefighters knocked down the blaze quickly, but it did spread to the roof of the garage and possibly damaged a portion of the home. Freelance media firm reported that no one was home at the time of the fire. Investigators have not announced what caused the fire. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Storm pummels mountain roads, basins; Highway 330 closed

Thursday's powerful storm brought heavy rain and snow to our local mountains, leaving basins overflowing and leading to the extended closure of a major highway. Caltrans officials were initially happy that the area around Highway 330 in the San Bernardino Mountains was receiving more snow than rain. 'Unfortunately, SR-330 still suffered significant debris flow in the basins that were recently impacted and cleaned,' Caltrans District 8 posted on Facebook Thursday evening. The popular route between Highland and Big Bear will remain closed until March 21 for assessment and cleanup 'due to the instability and unpredictability of the slopes,' Caltrans said. Meanwhile, snow flurries also shut down Highway 18 to Crestline Thursday. The closure remained in place until Friday morning when Caltrans announced at 5:30 a.m. that the roadway was open. Dozens of cars became gridlocked and spun out on the highway leaving emergency responders struggling to access the vehicles. Several vehicles were also involved in a pileup just north of SkyPark at Santa's Village, freelance media firm reported. As for the 330, Caltrans promised that 'crews will do all they can to expedite repairs and add mitigation measures to open the route ASAP! We are well aware of the importance of the route to our mountain communities and appreciate your patience and understanding.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Rock smashes through windshield, injures driver on 10 Freeway in downtown Los Angeles

A driver was struck in the chest by a large rock that crashed through his windshield while he was driving on the 10 Freeway in downtown Los Angeles on Thursday evening. It's unclear if the rock was thrown or fell from an overpass, according to the California Highway Patrol. Video from the stringer service shows a stalled pickup truck on the shoulder of the freeway with a gaping hole in the windshield. The vehicle was found by the Los Angeles Fire Department on the westbound side of the 10 Freeway at the 110 Freeway interchange near Adams Boulevard. The unidentified driver reported that something flew through his windshield and struck him in the chest, according to Lyndsey Lantz with the Los Angeles Fire Department. The extent of the driver's injuries were unknown, but he was taken to the hospital in an ambulance shortly before midnight.
