Ambika Mod says 'doors are starting to open' as she reflects on One Day success

A year after the sweeping success of her lead role in Netflix's One Day, Ambika Mod has shared her personal insights and experiences about being a brown woman in the film industry Netflix's One Day star Ambika Mod has opened up about her experience navigating the film industry as a woman and those who compare her career trajectory to her former co-star Leo Woodall. The actress shared her candid thoughts after new survey research from Mastercard revealed that women in film feel progress is reversing, but that younger generations are best poised to affect positive change. Speaking at a panel event alongside film director Nisha Ganatra (Freakier Friday), Mod said: 'It's great to see such a positive shift on screen, as the new research from Mastercard reflects. There's a real sense that change is taking hold, and that people are starting to believe in a more equal future for women in film.' ‌ 'It's something I've seen in my own experience, progress is happening, and doors are starting to open,' she continued. 'But the findings are also a timely reminder that we're not there yet - especially when it comes to behind-the-scenes roles. If we want lasting change, we need to make sure opportunities exist not just in front of the camera but across every part of the industry.' ‌ Following the success of the Netflix miniseries, Mod has gone on to star in the television series The Stolen Girl and hit movie Black Bag, alongside Cate Blanchett, BAFTA award winner Marisa Abela and fellow Netflix alum Regé-Jean Page, and was also named on the 2024 Time100 Next list recognising rising influential leaders. But despite her incredible success, her career trajectory is often compared to her former One Day co-star. Woodall's career has skyrocketed since the series, starring as the lead in Prime Target for Apple TV+ and recently earning a role in the upcoming Anthony Bourdain biopic, Tony. Speaking to British GQ, Mod shared she doesn't have access to the same 'privilege' as Woodall, though their careers are often compared. She said: 'It's mad because we wouldn't be going for the same roles at all, and we're very different people. I think we're going to have very different careers. If I compare myself to someone like Leo, I'm always going to come up short, because there's a privilege there that I don't have access to.' She revealed in the interview that she still struggles not to compare herself to her white peers. 'Being brown is not particularly easy in this industry. You don't get the same opportunities. You don't get the same ascension.' ‌ Despite her success on One Day and BBC 's This is Going to Hurt, Mod says she still feels she has to prove herself in a way white actors do not. 'I've been the lead of two very successful, critically-acclaimed TV shows and I still feel like I have to keep on proving myself. A lot of my white peers don't really have to tackle that." Mastercard's Women in Film research also cited that while representation of women on screen has improved, there is more pressure on women to 'prove themselves' than their male counterparts - particularly in behind-the-scenes roles. Still for Mod, the future is bright as ever with a slew of exciting projects on the horizon including two big theatre shows. Mod's one-woman show, Every Brilliant Thing, will soon kick off in the West End and be followed by a performance in Porn Play at the Royal Court. She will also take on a lead role in Sacrifice, the first English-language feature from French director Romain Gavras alongside Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Evans, Vincent Cassell and Charli XCX.

One Day's Ambika Mod On Leo Woodall Career Comparison

Last week, actor Ambika Mod was questioned about her and Leo Woodall's contrasting career trajectories post-One Day. If you watched the heartbreaking Netflix series, you'll know that Ambika delivered an excellent performance as Emma Morley alongside Leo, who played Dexter Mayhew. However, while Leo has been pretty booked and busy since One Day aired in February, Ambika hasn't had as much time in the limelight. Post-One Day, Leo starred in the latest Bridget Jones film, and played the protagonist in the Apple TV+ thriller series Prime Target. He is also set to star in an upcoming crime film called Tuner alongside Dustin Hoffman, and true-life thriller Burning Rainbow Farm with Sebastian Stan. When asked about the difference between her and Leo's careers at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, Ambika heartbreakingly said, 'I think we're going to have very different careers. If I compare myself to someone like Leo, I'm always going to come up short, because there's a privilege there that I don't have access to.' Ambika, who is of Indian heritage, continued: 'Being brown is not particularly easy in this industry. You don't get the same opportunities. You don't get the same ascension. I've been the lead of two very successful, critically-acclaimed TV shows and I still feel like I have to keep on proving myself. A lot of my white peers don't really have to tackle that.' Ambika's raw comments have since sparked an important discussion online, with several fans looking back on other times POC actors faced more difficulty in gaining equal recognition and opportunities compared with their white costars. For example, one person pointed out that Parminder Nagra's career was 'overshadowed' by Keira Knightley's after the pair starred together in the 2002 film Bend It Like Beckham — despite 'the movie being about a young Indian woman.' And after pop culture reporter @stells_press perfectly broke down Ambika's comments on TikTok, another fan noted that since playing Eddie Munson in Season 4 of Stranger Things, Joseph Quinn has starred in numerous acclaimed projects — including the leading role in A Quiet Place: Day One alongside Lupita Nyong'o. However, some members of the main cast from the first season, like Caleb McLaughlin and Gaten Matarazzo, haven't signed on to many renowned projects outside of the Netflix hit. Highlighting the difference in Lana Condor and Noah Centineo's careers post-To All The Boys I've Loved Before, someone wrote, 'lana has been in barely anything since but noah has been in about 500 different films.' Other fans mentioned Bridgerton, pointing out that Simone Ashley and Jonathan Bailey's careers have taken different turns despite the fact that they delivered equally powerful performances as the leads of Season 2. Jonathan has starred in hits like Wicked and Fellow Travelers, while Simone recently bagged her first leading role in years in the Prime Video movie Picture This, which she co-produced. And on the contrary, some fans highlighted white actors who have had 'more similar' career trajectories after starring in the same breakout role, citing Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones' similar success after starring in Normal People. If you can think of any more examples, feel free to share them in the comments.

Ranked: Biggest big hitters in Proteas history

Although the Proteas have never won the T20I World Cup, South Africa has produced some of the biggest-hitting batsmen of all time. T20 cricket, which was introduced 20 years ago, has often divided fan opinions over the years. This short format of the game, consisting of 20 overs, primarily favours batsmen, allowing powerful hitters to shine and establish their reputations worldwide. While players like JP Duminy have found success in T20 cricket, the retired all-rounder does not rank among South Africa's top big hitters. Here are five of the biggest hitters the country has seen over the past 30 years: AB de Villiers Known as 'Mr. 360', de Villiers was a joy to watch. At his peak between 2011 and 2018, he was a nightmare for bowlers around the world, capable of hitting any top bowler out of the park. He excelled not only in T20 cricket but also captivated fans in ODI and Test formats. Lance Klusener Nicknamed 'The Zulu,' Klusener was renowned for his aggressive batting style and effective bowling. He had a talent for taking wickets at crucial moments. Although he played in 171 One Day Internationals and 49 Test matches, he is most remembered for his outstanding performance in the 1999 World Cup, where he nearly led the Proteas to the final. Albie Morkel The retired all-rounder was famous for his ability to hit sixes. Although he did not participate regularly for the Proteas, he made a significant impact in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Morkel won two IPL titles with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and was regarded as one of the league's top players. Herschelle Gibbs By the time T20 cricket gained international popularity, Gibbs was nearing retirement. The former Proteas opener would have thrived in the T20 format for at least another decade. He was thrilling to watch, and on his best days, he could produce stunning performances. In 2007, he made history by hitting six consecutive sixes in an over against the Netherlands during a World Cup match. David Miller It's hard to believe that David Miller will be turning 36 in a few weeks. He has shown no signs of decline and could continue playing for another four years. His ability to hit big shots has often helped the Proteas secure victories, making him a valuable asset to South African cricket. Like Albie Morkel, Miller has been one of the most consistent South African players in the IPL, where he won one title. The 10 best TV shows headed to Aussie television this winter

Winter's closing in, which can only mean one thing: it's time to get snuggly on the couch and settle in for good old binge watch! Good news: there are plenty of great shows on the way. Ready, set, watch! And just like that, we're back with the girls! Can we still call them that? Probably not, they're well into their 50s. But true to form, they're still living their best New York lives. This season begins with Carrie settled into her enormous new Brownstone, Miranda dating up a storm (Che Diaz is out of the picture), and Charlotte still knee-deep in teen life. Frothy, escapist fun. Starring and executive produced by Owen Wilson, this series is about an over-the-hill pro golfer (Wilson) who, after the collapse of his life and his marriage, decides to hedge his bets and mentor a 17-year-old golf prodigy called Santi (Peter Dager). Described as a 'heartfelt, feel-good sports comedy', it's already getting lots of buzz. Ted Lasso 2.0? There have been some great British crime dramas doing the rounds of late, and this one, starring Sean Bean as a cocaine smuggling gangster called Ronnie Phelan, is up there, having already generated plenty of buzz in the UK. Joining Bean are James Nelson-Joyce as Ronnie's associate and Hannah Onslow as the woman he falls for — their love story is at the centre of the story. Based on the enormously popular book by Jane Harper, this stars The Rings Of Power's Charlie Vickers as Kieran Elliott, a man returning to his home town in Tasmania, along with his partner (Yerin Ha, who'll soon be seen as the romantic lead in the upcoming series of Bridgerton), haunted by a tragedy that changed their lives years earlier. When a woman's body is discovered on the beach, the truth of what really occurred comes to light. Based on the bestselling novel by E. Lockhart, the series follows the story of wealthy teen Cadence Sinclair Eastman (Emily Alyn Lind) and her close-knit group of friends, nicknamed The Liars. Cadence, from a privileged and secretive family, returns to their private island a year after a mysterious accident changed her life — dark secrets begin to emerge. One for younger viewers. If you've ever made a mixtape, then this one's for you! Based on the novel by Jane Sanderson, this tells the story of two teen lovers, Alison (Teresa Palmer) and Daniel (Jim Sturgess), living in Sheffield, England, in 1989 who drift apart, only to reconnect years later on the other side of the world. This has big One Day energy, and fans of that nostalgic Netflix series will want to check this out. Season two of this Tasmanian-set dark comedy is hitting screens mid-June. It sees Marta Dusseldorp returning to reprise her role as mum-on-the-run, Stella. She's still stuck in Mystery Bay, but good news — no one has tried to kill her in recent months! But things won't stay smooth-sailing for long — you can't mess with the Russian mafia and not expect consequences. Those that love a period drama will be pleased to see that this under-the-radar favourite is returning for a third season. The Julian Fellowes-created show follows New York's upper-crust as they navigate life in the 'Gilded Age'. Come for the fabulous frocks, stay for sensational performances from The White Lotus' Carrie Coon and Christine Baranski. Disney is doing fans a solid favour and dropping all 10 episodes of the fourth season at the same time — winning! This season sees Carmy, Sydney and Richie determined to move forward after the disastrous run-up to the opening of their fine dining establishment. Can they overcome all that toxicity and pull together as a team? We can't wait to find out. If you've seen the trailer for the third and final season of Squid Game, chances are you'll be bracing for the show's release — it looks scary as heck! This final series picks up from season two's devastating cliffhanger, and thrusts Gi-hun (Player 456) back into the game — he's more determined than ever to dismantle it once and for all. This one's shaping up to be big.
