Amazon adds ‘caregiver' features to pharmacy app

You can find original article here Supermarketnews. Subscribe to our free daily Supermarketnews newsletter. Amazon has added new functions to the Amazon Pharmacy app that better enables caregivers to help manage medications for a loved one. It also gives Medicare Part D recipients access to Amazon Pharmacy's PillPack feature, which provides presorted medication. 'These updates deliver what our customers have been asking for—simpler medication management for themselves and their loved ones,' said John Love, vice president of Amazon Pharmacy. 'Whether you're a caregiver juggling multiple prescriptions for an aging parent, or a customer who could benefit from the convenience of pre-sorted packets delivered reliably each month, we're removing barriers and making pharmacy work better for you.' Amazon said in a press release on Tuesday that AARP reports that one in five adults in the U.S. are caring for an aging family member. The new caregiver feature enables aging patients the option of inviting a trusted individual to help manage their medication through their Amazon Pharmacy portal. 'Amazon Pharmacy's new caregiver feature provides a secure, streamlined way for trusted individuals to help manage prescriptions and place orders 24/7, when and where convenient for them—all through their own Amazon accounts,' said Tess Carey, senior pharmacist at Amazon Pharmacy. 'This ensures medications arrive on time, giving both caregivers and patients greater peace of mind.' The pre-sorted PillPack feature also aims to help caregivers save time by receiving organized pharmaceuticals, making it easier to keep prescription schedules accurate. The health care arm of the online retail giant also touted the expansion of its new same-day prescription delivery service for Prime members in a dozen cities across the U.S., including Los Angeles, New York, and Seattle. Amazon announced in October that it plans to launch the same-day delivery service in 20 cities in 2025. That includes Boston, Dallas, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, and San Diego. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy told shareholders in late May that more changes are coming for the company's pharmacy business. He noted Amazon Pharmacy's One Medical app enables users to access their medical information in one place, meet with medical practitioners, and set up subscriptions for chronic issues. 'We've built programs like RxPass, which, for $5 a month for Prime members, gives our Prime members unlimited access to 60 common medications with very fast delivery and 24/7 pharmacy support,' Jassy said. 'We are changing this customer experience that people have had to endure on the pharmacy side for a really long time. We''re changing it very significantly.' Sign in to access your portfolio

Why Amazon Wanted To Buy This Company For $3.9 Billion

Amazon bought One Medical in 2023 for $3.9 billion. Amazon is known for its amazing customer experience, despite most customers never talking to an Amazon employee. How does this digital experience—with no human interaction—drive so much loyalty? The short answer is confidence. There is very little that goes wrong with an Amazon experience, and if by chance it does, its system takes care of almost all problems—again, without human interaction. That said, if a customer does need to talk to a human, which is very seldom, the customer support team is there. But what happens if you combine technology with a high-touch business, like a doctor's office? You get One Medical, which Amazon bought in 2023 for $3.9 billion. One Medical's founder, Dr. Tom Lee, is a Harvard-trained primary care physician who then went on to Stanford to get an MBA. Before opening his first clinic, he asked himself, 'Why do we do these in healthcare like we've always done them? Why does every waiting room look like some sterile IKEA? Why do I wait in a reception area and then wait again in the exam room?' It was questions like these that caused Lee to tinker with and disrupt the traditional medical visit model. Starting with one clinic, Lee created a different experience. He built an app and charged patients an $89/year subscription that gave them access to doctors. He focused on simple things like getting an appointment without making a call. Those little things were the start of what turned out to be a stellar experience that allowed him to expand, ultimately catching the eye of Amazon. When the Amazon deal was completed, HealthCare Dive reported that Amazon now had a network of more than 220 medical offices in 27 U.S. markets with more than 836,000 members plus 9,000 enterprise clients. Neil Lindsay, SVP of Amazon Health Services said, 'We're on a mission to make it dramatically easier for people to find, choose, afford and engage with the services, products and professionals they need to get and stay healthy, and coming together with One Medical is a big step on that journey.' That's what Amazon does. They make it easy for customers. Joseph Michelli, bestselling business author of numerous books that tell the stories of iconic brands like The Ritz-Carlton, Starbucks, Mercedes and others, recently released a new book, All Business Is Personal: One Medical's Human-Centered, Technology-Powered Approach to Customer Engagement, that tells the One Medical story. I had a chance to interview him on Amazing Business Radio, and here are the highlights that will give you some insight into why Amazon became interested in acquiring this amazing company. Question Everything Just ask, 'Why?' It doesn't matter what type of business you are in, there are reasons for everything. Often the reason a company or person does something is because 'We've always done it this way.' So, question everything. Maybe you'll still do it the way you've always done it, but at least you will have tried to find a better a Stellar Customer (Patient) Experience As Lee created a CX that drove impressive ratings, he looked at the friction most patients experienced. He started with an obvious pain point, the waiting room, which is, as the name implies, a room for people to wait. Some patients in traditional medical practices are forced to wait for unreasonable amounts of time. But not at One Medical. In addition to being easy to get a same-day or next-day appointment, Michelli shared that 95% of patients are seen within three minutes of their scheduled times. As already mentioned, Lee questioned every aspect of the patient's experience, and he found many ways to make it better. Blend Technology with the Human Touch Technology, like apps and AI, makes life more convenient for customers by allowing things like easy online scheduling or getting immediate answers from AI chatbots. Often, technology can feel cold and impersonal, especially in healthcare. The best use of technology is to make things faster and simpler, but smart businesses, like One Medical, know to offer human backup when a customer/patient needs it. Finding the right balance between tech and the human touch keeps your business from being a commodity—just 'another faceless service.' Convenience Is King People love doing business with companies that create convenient experiences. For One Medical, this means offering same-day appointments, speedy callbacks or handling many issues online versus the phone, so the patient doesn't have to wait on hold or wait for a callback. Research shows that 73% of customers will pay more for a convenient experience. The easier you make someone's experience, the more likely they will come back as well as tell others about you. Make It Personal, Not Just Personalized It's great to remember a customer's name or recall past purchases. That's personalization. To take it a step further, make it personal. Make the customer feel that you care about them. That means when the customer (or patient) talks to an employee, they feel cared for, listened to and valued. Personal connections build trust and confidence, which leads to repeat business and potential loyalty. The Effort Is Worth It These five reasons (and a few more) are what gave Amazon 3.9 billion reasons (as in dollars) to acquire One Medical. Even if you were to practice these reasons flawlessly, you may never catch Amazon's attention, but you will catch your customers' (and potential customers') attention. And that will make the effort worthwhile.

Amazon One Medical employees wrongfully accessed dead patient's records

Nine employees of Amazon One Medical, the online retailer's primary-care clinic, inappropriately viewed the health records of a dead patient whose family filed a lawsuit accusing the company of wrongful death, according to new court documents. The employees accessed the records of Philip Tong, a One Medical patient who died in California in late 2023, without a 'legitimate business purpose' after media coverage in December of his family's lawsuit, according to a letter from One Medical the family filed with a California court this week.

Meghan Markle drank this ‘woo woo' concoction while pregnant — does it really do anything for your health?

Go for the gold? Meghan Markle recently described her preferred pregnancy drink as 'woo woo,' but the brew may have concrete benefits. 'During my pregnancies, I had an Ayurvedic doctor, and so much of it was about seeing food as medicine,' Markle, 43, said on the latest episode of her podcast, 'Confessions of a Female Founder.' Markle was in conversation with Hannah Mendoza, founder of the superfood latte and tea brand Clevr Blends, which sells Markle's beloved Golden SuperLatte. 6 Meghan Markle noted that mushrooms, key adaptogenic ingredients in the Golden SuperLatte, have a 'hippie' reputation that confuses consumers. Getty Images Markle noted that mushrooms — key adaptogenic ingredients in many of Mendoza's products, including the Golden SuperLatte — have a 'hippie' reputation that confuses consumers. 'If you aren't familiar with adaptogens, you can go to this place of, 'Oh, it's feeling a little psychedelic and super woo woo,' but what we're talking about is, in some ways, is food trends, which you were ahead of the curve on,' Markle told Mendoza. What are adaptogens? Adaptogens are herbs, roots and plants that support the nervous system, reduce stress, promote cognitive function, balance the body and boost mood and immunity. 'Adaptogens are really interesting because [they're] a little bit vague, but essentially they are a combination of herbs and roots and other plants, like mushrooms,' Dr. Natasha Bhuyan, a primary care provider with One Medical in Phoenix, told The Post. 'They're supposed to restore balance in our body and help our bodies manage stress,' Bhuyan added. 'But people in the adaptogen industry say that it affects every single person differently.' 6 The superfood latte and tea brand Clevr Blends sells Markle's beloved Golden SuperLatte. Clevr Blends In addition to probiotics, oat milk and coconut cream, the Golden SuperLatte contains the adaptogens ashwagandha, lion's mane and reishi mushrooms. Ashwagandha, a shrub native to Asia and Africa and a staple of Ayurvedic medicine, is known to help regulate the body's stress response by normalizing cortisol levels. A 2021 analysis of seven studies found that ashwagandha significantly reduced stress and anxiety while improving sleep quality and fatigue compared to a placebo. In a 2022 clinical trial by the University of Colorado involving 60 students, participants who took ashwagandha root extract for 30 days reported improved well-being, a sense of calm, better energy and heightened mental clarity. Other studies have suggested that ashwagandha may help regulate blood sugar, reduce inflammation, boost cognitive abilities and enhance athletic performance. 6 In addition to probiotics and oat milk and coconut cream, the Golden SuperLatte contains the adaptogens ashwagandha, lion's mane and reishi mushrooms. Clevr Blends Used for centuries for their healing properties, lion's mane mushrooms contain two compounds — hericenones and erinacines — that might help stimulate the growth of brain cells. A 2020 study found that taking capsules of lion's mane every day for 49 weeks might bring about significant improvements in cognitive health among people with Alzheimer's disease. The supplement has also been linked to better cognitive functioning for people with mild cognitive impairment, but more studies are needed to establish any consistent or significant cognitive benefit. 6 Reishi mushrooms support the function of the adrenal glands. Jaroslav Machacek – Reishi mushrooms are commonly used to treat cancer in Asia, according to the National Cancer Institute. These medicinal mushrooms support the function of the adrenal glands. A 2020 study found that reishi treatment reduced stress-induced brain inflammation in rats exposed to low oxygen levels and helped protect against nerve damage and memory impairment. What are the benefits of turmeric? 6 Turmeric contains curcumin, a compound rich in anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. jintana – The gold in the Golden SuperLatte comes from turmeric, a spice derived from the root of the Curcuma longa plant. This root contains curcumin, a compound rich in anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. By reducing inflammation and oxidative damage, curcumin shields the brain from stressors that lead to cognitive decline. As The Post reported, turmeric has been shown to ease symptoms of indigestion, lower the risk of heart disease, fight depression and improve memory. Known as the 'gold' of the plant kingdom, turmeric also supports liver detoxification and acts as a natural painkiller. 6 Cinnamon is an ingredient in the Golden SuperLatte. The spice is known to help balance blood sugar. AP The Golden SuperLatte includes additional organic ingredients that can boost overall health. Black pepper contains piperine, a compound that may improve memory and cognitive function by increasing neurotransmitter activity in the brain. Piperine has also been shown to aid the body's absorption of other nutrients from food and supplements. The brew also has cinnamon. A daily dose of cinnamon may help ward off diabetes, as the spice helps balance blood sugar levels by increasing insulin sensitivity and reducing insulin resistance. Stable blood sugar is crucial for optimizing brain function throughout the day and preventing neurodegenerative diseases. Also on the good-for-you ingredient list? Ginger. Used in Chinese and Indian medicine for thousands of years, ginger comes from the roots of the Zingiber officinale plant. It contains the compound gingerol, which has been shown to have powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. As The Post reported, ginger neutralizes free radicals, which cause oxidative stress and contribute to cellular damage and aging. Its powers also enhance the body's ability to burn calories, making the spice a boon to dieters. The royal-approved bevvie also features antioxidant-rich green tea extract, which contains catechins like EGCG that can reduce the risk of chronic diseases by helping to protect against cellular damage.

Amazon Primary Care Is Coming To A Town Near You. E-Commerce Giant Steps Up Healthcare Chain Rollout

Where Walgreens and Walmart (NYSE:WMT) failed, Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) aims to succeed. As Americans age, primary healthcare has become an increasingly important target for retailers. However, it has proven elusive to conquer. According to CoStar News, Amazon is trying a different approach. By partnering with hospital chains and offering care to its Prime members — currently with an additional cost — it hopes to succeed where others have not. The San Francisco-based Amazon One Medical recently opened its first center in Edgewater, New Jersey. One Medical offers a hybrid virtual and in-person primary care service with further expansion plans in Jersey City and Englewood in New Jersey, Westchester County in New York, and Cleveland planned this year. Don't Miss: Deloitte's fastest-growing software company partners with Amazon, Walmart & Target – Hasbro, MGM, and Skechers trust this AI marketing firm — . In New Jersey, One Medical is partnering with Hackensack Meridian Health, the Garden State's largest health network, according to CoStar News. In Westchester, it will facilitate treatments for members of the Montefiore Health System and the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. One Medical customers in Edgwater will be offered same-day and next-day in-person appointments and 24/7 virtual care. The facility will treat both short and longterm patients with chronic conditions. As with other businesses under its umbrella, Amazon is hoping to leverage its vast Prime membership base to build its healthcare business. Currently, Prime members can add One Medical membership for $9 a month or $99 a year. The company's website states that One Medical also works with 10,000 U.S. employers as part of a benefit package for their workers and their dependents. Trending: The average American couple has saved this much money for retirement —? Two years after buying One Medical for $3.9 billion in February 2023 — one of the company's biggest acquisitions — Amazon finds itself with two of its main competitors either out of the race or diminished. Walmart exited the primary healthcare business last April, closing 51 locations. "Through our experience managing Walmart Health centers and Walmart Health Virtual Care, we determined there is not a sustainable business model for us to continue," a company statement read. "Escalating operating costs create a lack of profitability that makes the care business unsustainable for us at this time.' Walgreens Village MD bought Summit Health and CityMD — an urgent-and-primary-care chain — for $8.9 billion in 2022. However, recently, it appeared to be divesting from the primary healthcare space and going private, announcing a $10 billion deal with Sycamore loss of competition doesn't mean that Amazon's entry into primary healthcare hasn't been without problems. Last year, its use of virtual medical visits resulted in a wrongful death lawsuit, which brought into question the efficacy of telehealth in diagnosing problems. According to the Washington Post, the lawsuit alleged poorly trained staff were used, leading to the death of a diabetic patient who was told to buy an inhaler to treat their symptoms. In July, Google announced it would not renew its contract with One Medical, according to Business Insider. The longstanding agreement gave Google employees access to discounted medical care and was a big loss for One Medial as Google was the company's biggest customer, accounting for 10% of its revenue in 2020, before Amazon, a rival purchased it. That number dropped slightly in 2021, after which One Medical stopped publicly disclosing its finances. One Medical suffered another setback in March when the chain lost CEO Trent Green, who left to head global insights and strategy firm National Research.
