Spacey Jane donates panel fee to support Regional Sounds' Geraldton music hub

Australian indie rock favourites — and a Geraldton claim to fame — Spacey Jane made a powerful gesture of support for the regional arts scene last weekend during Triple J's One Night Stand festival. The band took centrestage in Busselton, headlining the long-awaited return of the festival to WA — its first time in the State since 2016, when Geraldton's Wonthella Oval played host. As featured panel speakers for the event, Spacey Jane threw their support behind the Mid West, choosing to donate their speaker fee to Regional Sounds rather than accept payment for their appearance. Regional Sounds arts development officer Sarah Hinton said it came as a complete surprise but the donation was 'crucial' for the local music industry in Geraldton. 'On Saturday morning I got to meet them and thank them in person and we got to chat about how they got their start,' she said. 'We are working with the City of Greater Geraldton to enter into a five-year lease for the building that we operate from, so that gives our organisation and the local music industry this incredibly strong foundation. 'I think it shows the Australian music industry. No one is pulling the ladder up behind them. They're always so giving back to the communities that initially supported them.' With half of the band — lead vocalist and guitarist Caleb Harper and drummer Kieran Lama — hailing from Geraldton, Spacey Jane understand the importance of nurturing regional talent, with Harper and Lama reminiscing to Ms Hinton about their youth spent busking in the middle of town. 'Caleb and Kieran were talking about how they used to busk Marine Terrace in the lead-up to Christmas and make a fair chunk of cash and so I suppose for them, they want to keep seeing that vibrancy in the CBD and maintaining that access for use,' she said. 'So for us, that supports us with the lease. We can deliver youth programming in partnership with WAM . . . so it all just keeps it in momentum and we're really looking forward to cementing our place.'

Triple J to host More Than A One Night Stand Sessions to help budding musicians

Triple J has announced the return of its much-loved More Than A One Night Stand Sessions which will be hosted in the South West this month. The free music sessions were designed to give emerging and established artists a platform and were first launched at the One Night Stand concert in 2024 in Victoria. The event offers artists an opportunity to learn, meet and hear from people in the Australian music industry. This year's South West event will feature an In Conversation talk with Spacey Jane, a workshop for regional artists and a session with members from West Australian band DICE. The In Conversation event runs from 10.30am to 11.30am on May 24 where the band will reflect on their career with Triple J host Ash McGregor. Spacey Jane — known for the songs Booster Seat, Feeding the Family, Good For You and Thrills — are expected to talk about the barriers regional artists face when trying to break in to the industry, as well as opportunities, connections and pathways. The hour-long Tapped In workshop will run on May 23 from 5pm with Triple J Unearthed winners Fool Nelson leading the activity. Hailing from Perth and Busselton, two brothers and their best mate make up the band known for the songs Bad Dreams, Way I Am and Don't Feel Right. They will be alongside other industry members to discuss being an artist in regional and rural communities, hosted by Triple J's Lucy Smith DICE — known for the songs Stop Sign, Bad Tattoo and This is Not a Love Song — will host the How To Build Off Initial Success session, which is also led by Sam Ford, a Margaret River producer and artist manager. The workshop builds on techniques for growth in the music industry after an initial breakthrough in the entertainment industry. All sessions are held at the Busselton Youth and Community Activities Building. The More Than A One Night Stand event makes its appearance the same weekend as the Triple J One Night Stand concert where Spacey Jane, DICE and Fool Nelson are playing in Busselton alongside LUUDE, Ruby Fields and Blusher. The concert begins at 2pm on May 24 in Bernard Park, Busselton, with tickets open to all ages.

Concert fee debate as popular festival heads west

The City of Busselton council will be discussing waiving several event-based fees totalling $20,000 for the upcoming One Night Stand event, hosted by Triple J, at their meeting on Wednesday night. Organisers of the event, set for May 24, have asked for the in-kind $20,000 contribution, which includes waiving ground, venue hire and associated fees and charges, including a $12,878 Barnard Park concert ground hire fee, a $4200 YCAB venue hire for workshop sessions, and a $1074 fee towards hiring the digital billboard for two weeks. Other costs include road closure fees, a concert application fee, and a traffic management plan application fee, although the organisers will have to pay bonds for any damages and statutory fees charged by the city for concert approvals. In the officer comments provided for councillors to help their decision making, it was stated the city had received contact from a Triple J last December about Busselton's nomination to host the event. The Triple J team inspected facilities at Barnard Park in January, and the city received the announcement Busselton was the host location in February. The event is expected have a capacity of 15,000 — according to the officer comments — with tickets selling out within six hours of its release and mostly taken up by people in the State and South West region. Previous events in other regional areas have brought economic benefit worth more than $1.2 million, with the event expected to be broadcast live on Triple J nationally and several activations to take place around the main concert. Triple J requests in-kind support from the host location with event communications and logistics and on-the-ground support. The waiving is expected to have direct costs to the city — including traffic management and potential post-event rehabilitation costs.

WWE Survivor Series 2025 announced for San Diego in November

WWE has confirmed that Survivor Series 2025 will take place at Petco Park in San Diego on 29 November, marking the first time the event will be held in a stadium in its nearly four-decade history. WWE announced on 22 April on its corporate website that its flagship Survivor Series 2025 event will be hosted at Petco Park, San Diego, on 29 November. The event is set to be the first premium live WWE event in San Diego since 2008, and the first time the Survivor Series will be held in a stadium setting. 'For the first time in the event's nearly 40-year history, Survivor Series will take place in a stadium on 29 November, and we believe Petco Park in San Diego is the perfect host for a historic night,' said WWE Chief Content Officer Paul "Triple H" Levesque in a press release. Petco Park, home to Major League Baseball's San Diego Padres, will offer a new visual and fan experience for one of WWE's 'Big Four' events. WWE also revealed that premium packages will soon be available via OnLocation. These will feature upgraded seating, pre-show hospitality, appearances by WWE Superstars, and ringside photo opportunities. San Diego last hosted a major WWE event in 2008, when the final edition of One Night Stand was held at the San Diego Sports Arena. Additional ticketing and broadcast details are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
