One Roofing on the major financial benefits gained from a new roof

Owner Sean Weir explains: 'You only have to look at some of the housing stock across Glasgow and Lanarkshire, to see that many of the roofs are becoming tired. 'The cost of repairing a roof can be substantial, and if you are doing that year after year, it can be more cost-effective to replace the full roof. 'That will not only add considerable value to your home, it will give you peace of mind for many decades to come.' (Image: One Roofing) Sean has almost 20 years' experience in roofing, having worked as a sub-contractor for some of the west of Scotland's biggest companies. He decided to set up his own business in November 2022 and it has become a trusted name in in the industry. 'I've always been a roofer, ever since I left school,' Sean explains. 'Even before then, in fact, because my step-dad was a roofer and I used to do some bits and pieces of work for him after school or at the weekends to get some pocket money. 'He's retired now, but I learned a lot from working with him. After I left school, I just kept going.' He adds: 'Setting up my own business was the next step – I wanted to be in control of everything from the materials I'm using, to the quality of the finish. For me, it's always been about ensuring the best quality, and I'm proud of the service we provide.' (Image: One Roofing) The company provides a range of services, including roof replacement and repairs, flat roofs, conservatory roofs and roughcasting. Sean and his team, which includes his brother, Ryan, guide customers through every stage of the process, offering expert advice and support to ensure every project meets the highest standards. Full roof replacement is becoming more common, says Sean. 'We understand how big a step that is for customers, because replacing a roof is probably one of the most expensive things you can do to your home,' he says. 'However, it is also an investment. It adds value and can push up the price of your home if you are considering selling. You might spend around £10k or £15k replacing your roof, but it could add between £30k and £40k to the asking price.' One Roofing and Building Services prides itself on being able to handle all sizes of roofs, as Sean explains. (Image: One Roofing) 'The time taken to replace a roof obviously varies between projects – recently, for example, we spent eight weeks at a property with a 600sq m roof, but the average roof size is about 50 sq m so the turnaround is much quicker,' he points out. 'We're a small, tight-knit team, and we have worked together for many years. Quality is absolutely key to everything we do, from the customer service we provide to the materials we use.' Materials and process have changed considerably in the last two decades, explains Sean. 'After World War Two, there was a housing boom in Britain, with council estates springing up all over the country in the 1950s and 1960s,' he says. 'The roofs were built using a wet system, with concrete tiles and felt, sometimes horsehair, underneath, and ridging which was cemented. 'As central heating was introduced, houses became hotter and that meant more condensation. Over the last 20 years or so, materials and processes have changed to a dry system, which allows roofs to breathe.' In addition to roof replacement and repairs, the company provides a range of other services including flat roofs, roughcasting and conservatory roofs. 'Conservatories traditionally suffer from being far too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer,' says Sean. 'Our well-designed roofs help improve insulation, which means you can use the space all year round. 'It is important to address things like leaks and condensation early so they don't escalate into bigger problems. We are able to help with everything from minor fixes to full restoration.' Again, points out Sean, 'quality is key.' He explains: 'I'm very passionate about making sure we provide the best service possible. It's the reason I started my own business, to ensure that everything we do is of high quality. 'We do not take any deposit, there are no upfront costs at all so the customer has peace of mind from the start.' Sean adds: 'We understand how big a step it is for a homeowner to think about replacing their roof, so we want them to rest assured that we will provide the best service, all the way through from the initial quotation, to the completion of the job.'
