The moment I knew: I heard her sing for the first time and awe ran through me
In 2023 I made my regular queer pilgrimage from Melbourne to Sydney to strut the streets at Mardi Gras in flared pink pants. With my best friend in tow we moved through the masses of glittered faces. We stumbled on a house party – the balcony overflowing with people dancing. Partygoers littered the street below, praising the DJ as they hung from trees and danced on car roofs, waving their rainbow fans in sync with the music. My attention turned from the sea of LED-lit cowboy hats to a girl standing a few metres away. She was wearing a fluffy pink bikini but one of the first things I noticed were her beautiful brown eyes. My best friend urged me to approach her. I tapped her on the shoulder and blurted out: 'I'm sorry if you're straight but I think you're really pretty.' She said she wasn't straight and she thought I was pretty too. She told me her name was Elissa. Not only did we share almost the same name, we were just three weeks apart in age. I was captivated by her vibrant energy and beaming smile. Despite the swarm of people around us, I felt almost as though I was alone with her. We planned to get dinner and drinks the next night. I spent the day at Bronte beach recounting the previous night's antics to friends, joking that Elissa could end up being the love of my life. As I headed back to the hotel to get ready for our dinner, Elissa messaged me to say she was too busy with university work to meet up. She told me that if I were ever back in Sydney she would love to see me again. The hopeless romantic in me, who was already speculating where this might go, was gutted. The next day I headed home to Melbourne. I was convinced that nothing would happen between us, especially since she'd flaked on our date. To my surprise, she messaged me a few days later. I didn't want to pursue anything because we lived in different cities but soon we couldn't stop messaging each other and calling late at night. A month after we met I impulsively booked a flight back to Sydney. We spent a night in a trance, taking each other in. I felt magnetically drawn to her. And yet her presence didn't set off nerves – I felt calm. I extended my trip. We spent the next week sharing secrets and watching the waves at Bondi beach. We sketched in my journal in Hyde Park, perched on a park bench by a busking saxophonist. We discovered our shared love of music. One evening we were sitting in Elissa's lounge room overlooking Bondi's dramatic cliff faces. Noticing the piano in the corner, I asked her if she could play for me. I was excited – we had spoken so much about music, and she once sent me a snippet of herself playing, but this was the first time I would see her perform in person. Related: The moment I knew: I'd never felt a palm so sweaty. I was smitten She started playing complex compositions with such grace and ease. I was already impressed but I knew she could sing too. After toying with the idea for a while, she finally started singing Adele's One and Only. Her voice was angelic, her piano playing magical. I was in awe of this phenomenal human being. I felt grateful to just be in her presence. When she finished the song I realised I was screwed. My feelings were profound and there was no turning back. After that trip we were desperate to see more of each other. Keeping things casual wasn't an option. This marked the beginning of 18 months of escapades through both our cities. We rarely went two weeks without seeing each other. I remember longing for her to touch down in Melbourne – my adrenaline increasing as I drove to the airport. I'd detour at a drive-through to surprise her with her favourite: a McFlurry with extra M&Ms. I would count down the hours until my plane would take off, and hope for a window seat so I could marvel at the Opera House. We cracked crosswords together and snuggled up by the fireplace at my family's beach house on the Mornington Peninsula. As we explored each other's states and minds, I knew we had found something lasting. We spent three months travelling through Europe together and realised we couldn't return to the cycle of bidding each other goodbye at airports. Now we live together in Melbourne. Two and a half years in, we play music together and continue to explore each other's minds.

During his time on Celebrity Big Brother, Chesney admitted he felt a fatherly bond with JoJo, especially after Mickey Rourke made homophobic remarks towards her. He told the Diary Room after the incident: 'It's funny because JoJo is the same age as my daughter. My daughter is also part of the LGBTQ community so it just reminded me of her and I think she really handled it well. 'So I was just sort of proud of her in a fatherly way.' While on the red carpet at the Baftas today, Chesney said he was still adjusting to life outside of the CBB house, having immediately started touring to promote his new album. 'I feel like this is my first proper release back into the wild here,' he joked. 'I've been gigging, I've never stopped.' He then confirmed Jesse would be 'going over' for Pride with JoJo, presumably to the Los Angeles pride event, which is held on the second weekend of June. The massive city-wide event includes a street parade, live performances and parties in honour of the LGBT community. CBB fans unearth Chesney Hawkes' past appearance and question why it hasn't been mentioned
Celebrity Big Brother fans were stunned to find out Chesney Hawkes has already appeared on the show, with users wondering why it hasn't been mentioned in this year's series Fans of Celebrity Big Brother have been left flabbergasted after a video of Chesney Hawkes on the show 16 years ago resurfaced. A TikTok user took to the social media platform to share a clip of the singer appearing on the hit show in 2009. In the clip, the One and Only singer, now 53, is seen appearing over the fence at the famous house. As celebrities took part in a challenge, a number dressed up as paparazzi. Among those disguised as press were Tina Malone and Lucy Pinder. A Chesney shrine was set up in the living room for the task, with Terry Christian and Mutya Buena needing to worship it. They then prepared for a 'what would Chesney do' quiz. While they questioned the answers, the singer's hit tune blasted throughout the house, causing the celebrities to dance. As others prepared for a dance in the garden, one gasped: "Oh, quick, celebrity" to make sure those set up as paparazzi could grab an image. The group squealed with excitement as Chesney waved down from above and shouted hello. They then started serenading the singer with his own tune as he smiled down on them. "Chesney, smile," shouted Tina before they started clapping to the beat of his tune. "Chesney, I wet myself when I saw you" Tina then exclaimed to the laughter of fellow housemates. Fans quickly questioned why more hasn't been made of his past experience during this year's contest. One user gasped: "WHY HAS THIS NOT BEEN MENTIONED!" Another added: "I watch this celebrity Big brother and I don't remember this. what the heck?," while a third said: "I remember this why had [sic] this not been rehashed while he's in the house !!" A fourth also confessed: "I'm surprised he hasn't mentioned this," while another said: "I've been waiting for this to be mentioned." Chesney is currently in the final of this years competition, with the winner to be revealed tonight (Friday, April 25). While he has been a favourite on the show, the musician was close to tears after the recent round of face-to-face nominations. During the brutal task, Ella Rae Wise called out his behaviour when around Mickey Rourke. Ella chose to nominate singer Chesney, claiming he was in the same environment as Mickey Rourke when he made a lewd sexual comment towards her. She added that she believed Chesney should have defended her in the situation. The outburst left him taken aback and emotional. During a conversation with JoJo Siwa, he Ella's reasoning was given in a "bad tone." He said: "It was pretty mean," as JoJo believed the reality star was "trying to get a rise" from Chesney. Chesney continued: "She was upset and she was angry and she kind of took it out on me, unfairly, I would say. I think the comment she made about me was the harshest one in that room to be honest. She questioned my being a man and not standing up for her."

Chesney Hawkes addresses Celebrity Big Brothers rumours
Chesney Hawkes dodged questions about his potential involvement with this year's Celebrity Big Brother during an interview on Friday. The One and Only singer was grilled about the speculation by presenters Nina Warhurst and Charlie Stayt while promoting his tour on BBC Breakfast. "Rumour has it, Chesney, that you're going in Celebrity Big Brother. Is that true or not?" Charlie asked, to which the singer coyly responded, "I have no idea what you're talking about." Charlie pressed him further by asking, "So, that's a yes?" prompting the 53-year-old to reply, "Pfft, I don't know where you got that from." Nina then proposed a hypothetical question about how Chesney might prepare if he were heading into the Big Brother house on Monday. "Probably sleeping if I was to do that," Chesney remarked, before deflecting the line of questioning by asking Charlie if he was doing the reality show. "I'm not doing it, I can categorically say I'm not," Charlie confirmed, to which Nina added, "So can I; you can't though." Chesney then struggled to find a response when asked for his whereabouts on Tuesday, and Charlie suggested that maybe he had "a clear couple of weeks" in his schedule. "Yeah, I'm just going to rest in... sitting on the couch at home" the hitmaker added, to which the presenters complimented him for "holding the line" and not giving anything away. This year's edition of Celebrity Big Brother, once again hosted by AJ Odudu and Will Best, kicks off on Monday. The housemates will be revealed on the night, however, rumoured contestants include Hollywood actor Mickey Rourke, soap stars Patsy Palmer and Jack P Shepherd, dancer JoJo Siwa, and TV personalities Trisha Goddard and Chris Hughes.

Chesney Hawkes: ‘As my dad once said, don't believe the hype'
I grew up in a rock'n'roll household. My dad, Chip, was a musician; my mum, Carol [Dilworth], was an actor and gameshow hostess. They were glamorous. They had famous friends. Our house was always party up with guitars propped in every corner – and a little recording studio – of the house meant that my brother, sister and I were never going to become accountants.I was quite a precocious kid. I never had any other aspirations other than music, so I slightly rebelled at school. I wish I'd paid more attention. I left at 15 and learned my craft by playing pianos in Song kickstarted my career. I starred with Roger Daltrey. Acting wasn't what I wanted to do – I went for the part because I thought there might be a record deal at the end of it, which there was. I'd been sending cassettes of my songs to record labels and been turned down. The One and Only came from the soundtrack to the I performed on Top of the Pops my life became crazy. Suddenly, everywhere I went there was a gaggle of girls and paparazzi. The One and Only got to number one all over Europe and into the Top 10 in the States. Things turned upside down.I understand when I see young artists have their exhaustion moment – I once went to seven countries in one day. Very instantly your life is not your own. You have success in different territories all at the same time and you have to go and visit them. My brother and I were away from home for two years.I never really understood the hysteria of fame. I'd come face to face with a fan and they'd just scream in my face. Things are different the record labels dropped me, I went off the rails. I drank and took drugs to escape the fact I thought I was a washed up has-been at 22. I closed the lid on my feelings, which wasn't very was pretty instant when I met Krissy. She was 20, I was 22. She walked into a pub in Mortlake, London, near where I lived, to celebrate 4 July – she's American. I asked if I could buy her a drink. She said, 'I'll have a pint of lager.' In my head I thought: 'Marry me.'Our secret? Spending time away from each other. It's true that absence makes the heart grow fonder. But there are many other secrets. Communication is crucial: we don't hide anything from each other. My dad once said, 'Don't believe the hype – none of it's real.' I didn't really take that in at the time, but I do now, especially as I'm a father myself. Our kids are 23, 21 and 18 – they are what's important in life.I have no regrets. There are things in my career I'd have done differently but they don't keep me up at night. I believe everything brings you to where you are.I'm happy to be home. I've been living in the desert of LA for the past 12 years, but we're now in leafy Surrey, near where I grew up. Life has come full circle. I used to do a paper round not lived here long and every day is a blessing. You have to look at life that way and take it by the horns. That's what age has done to me. I'm loving being in my 50s. I feel liberated. I'm having the time of my life. Chesney Hawkes releases his new album, Living Arrows, on 28 February. His tour starts 20 March, visit
