Donald Trump Greeted With Boos, Cheers, Drag Queen Parade During First Visit to Kennedy Center For ‘Les Misérables' Performance
After appointing himself chair of the Kennedy Center and replacing its board members with loyalists, President Donald Trump's first-ever visit to the revered Washington, D.C. cultural center on Wednesday night (June 11) was likely not the warm welcome he expected. Taking his seat for the opening night of Les Misérables, the Associated Press reported that Trump was met with a mix of cheers and boos, as well as an unexpected parade of drag queens who sashayed past the first couple, seemingly in protest of Trump's previous vow of 'NO MORE DRAG SHOWS, OR OTHER ANTI-AMERICAN PROPAGANDA.' In addition, a dozen performers — from major cast members to ensemble performers — planned to sit out the show after being given the option not to perform on the night Trump was in the house to enjoy what he has said is one of his favorite musicals. The show about 19th century France features a song Trump has played at his rallies in the past, 'Do You Hear the People Sing?,' a revolutionary anthem inspired by the 1832 rebellion against King Louis-Phillipe of France. In his second term, Trump — who admittedly had never attended a performance at the Kennedy Center in his first term, or ever — has swiftly moved to remake the organization in his own image. After installing himself as chairman of the Center, Trump also placed a number of loyalists on the typically non-partisan board and vowed to remove 'woke' shows from the roster. Subsequently, nearly two dozen events have been canceled or postponed, a number out of protest at Trump's takeover, including Hamilton, the National Youth Poet Laureate Commemoration, Saigon Nights, as well as shows by Peter Wolf, Low Cut Connie, Rhiannon Giddens, Issa Rae and many more. The AP reported that the show that tackles themes of protest, power, injustice and poverty featured the sounds of explosions and gunfire, with civilians clashing with soldiers on stage at the very same time that Los Angeles was put under curfew after protesters battled with police over immigration raids by ICE for a sixth day following Trump's call-up of Marines and National Guard troops to quell the protests. 'Someone explain the plot to him,' California Gov. Gavin Newsom wrote on X. In March, Vice President J.D. Vance and wife Usha were booed when they attended a performance by the National Symphony Orchestra and the AP also noted that sales of subscription packages have reportedly declined since the Trump makeover. CNN also reported that while some cheered and clapped for Trump and First Lady Melania Trump as they stood up at the end of the first act, one woman in the orchestra section below shouted, 'Felon, you're a convicted felon!' to the first U.S. president to take the office after being convicted of a felony. The women then added, 'Convicted felon, rapist!' before a security guard seemed to escort her out; Trump was found liable for sexual abuse and defamation in 2023 in a suit filed by writer E. Jean Carroll and in 2024 was convicted on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in an attempt to conceal hush money payments to porn actress Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election. In addition, as the crowd awaited Trump's return to his seat, another person reportedly yelled, 'F–k Trump! to cheers, while a supportive patron responded with 'We love you.' The president seemingly reacted to the comments by pumping his first three times — reminiscent of his response after an assassination attempt last year in Pennsylvania in which a gunman fired at the then-candidate and nicked his ear. Lorde Calls Charli xcx, Chappell Roan & Gracie Abrams on Live Radio & Catches One of Them Mid-Hangover
Lorde was on the air with BBC Radio 1 recently — and unbeknownst at first to Gracie Abrams, Charli xcx and Chappell Roan, they were, too. In a TikTok clip posted Wednesday (June 11), the New Zealand native played a hilarious game of 'Sitting or Standing' on the English radio station, during which she was tasked with guessing whether a few of the famous friends in her contact list were on their feet or seated at that very moment before calling to check. Starting with the 'That's So True' singer, Lorde incorrectly bet that she would be sitting. More from Billboard Everything We Know About Lorde's 'Virgin' So Far DJ Akademiks Denies Taking Payola From Drake During Kendrick Battle Raekwon and Ghostface Killah Release Trailer for 'Only Built 4 Cuban Linx' Documentary 'I'm standing, should I sit?' a confused-sounding Abrams answered after picking up the phone, sweetly adding, 'I love you.' The Auckland native was 0 for 2 when she also guessed that the 'Pink Pony Club' artist would be sitting down. 'I'm so sorry, I'm on Radio 1, I'm doing this horrible show where they make me ask this ridiculous question,' a playfully frustrated Lorde explained to Roan after hearing her answer, to which the perplexed latter asked, 'Wait, so is this on the radio?' When it came time to call Charli, the 'Von Dutch' singer was immediately suspicious as Lorde asked whether she was sitting or standing. 'What is happening?' she said warily. 'I'm lying down.' 'I'm so hungover,' Charli drawled as the 'Royals' singer laughed. 'Oh, hi everyone. I can't believe I'm on the radio like this.' 'You're perfect,' Lorde responded. 'Keep lying down, I love you. I owe you.' The two-time Grammy winner has strong friendships with all three of the artists she called. In her April Billboard cover story, Abrams gushed that her pal is 'like 800 years old inside … whenever we're together, I feel my nervous system regulate differently,' while Roan said last year that Lorde reached out and gave her a list of advice for handling the 'abusive' elements of fame. Lorde's relationship with Charli has been a little bumpier, with the two women going through a rough patch before publicly resolving their issues on the 'Girl, So Confusing' remix supporting Charli's Brat album. They would later team up to perform the track during Charli's Coachella set earlier this year. The 'Green Light' artist is now gearing up to drop an LP titled Virgin on June 27, marking her first full-length in four years. So far, she's shared two singles from the project: 'What Was That' and 'Man of the Year,' which has recently been taking flight on TikTok thanks to a trend that finds users posting screenshots of toxic messages sent by ex-boyfriends. Also on Monday, Lorde hilariously reacted to the trend by posting a video of herself widening her eyes and shaking her head in disappointment. 'These messages…….,' she wrote in her caption. Watch Lorde call up Abrams, Roan and Charli on BBC Radio 1 and check out her 'Man of the Year' TikTok below. Ananda Lewis, who had a celebrated run on MTV as a veejay and as the host of shows including Total Request Live and Hot Zone, has died at age 52. News of Lewis' death was confirmed in a Facebook post by her sister, Lakshmi Emory. In 2020, Lewis revealed that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer, saying that she had long avoided mammograms and urged early testing. More from Billboard DJ Akademiks Denies Taking Payola From Drake During Kendrick Battle Raekwon and Ghostface Killah Release Trailer for 'Only Built 4 Cuban Linx' Documentary SEVENTEEN Have a Good Time Being a 'Bad Influence' in Futuristic Video For Pharrell-Produced Single Her last post to Instagram was in February, when she wrote that 'prevention is the cure. If you're in a healthy body, you're holding a winning lotto ticket. PLEASE learn how to avoid cancer. Because you still can.' Lewis is survived by her son, Langston, who is 14. Born in Los Angeles, Lewis attended Howard University and then came to cultural prominence in the late '90s as an MTV veejay. After joining the network in 1997, she hosted programs including the countdown show Total Request Live and Hot Zone, which featured music videos and Lewis' artist interviews. The network also called upon Lewis to host specials on school violence after the 1999 Columbine shooting along with a tribute program following the 2001 death of Aaliyah. Lewis launched The Ananda Lewis Show in 2001 and later served as a correspondent on Entertainment Tonight spin-off The Insider, eventually leaving that project to pursue carpentry. Her final project was as the host of TLC's While You Were Out. On social media, fellow former MTV veejay Dave Holmes remembered Lewis writing 'Well, this is awful. Ananda Lewis has died. She was the best: friendly funny kind clever cool committed passionate patient stylish and smart. If you were working with her, you knew you'd be having fun, and you'd want to step your game up to match her effortless charisma. You couldn't, but the trying made you better. We bonded over our shared love of this song, it has reminded me of her ever since, and now it always will. All my love to her family.' Inside Manuel Turizo's 201 World Tour: ‘We're Going to Create Chaos'
Manuel Turizo officially hits the road on Wednesday (June 11), taking his 201 World Tour to Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. The CMN and La Industria Inc-produced stint is in support of his latest studio album 201, which is an homage to the apartment number where he grew up in Montería, and 'represents all those dreams I had since I was a child, all those young desires,' he previously told Billboard. More from Billboard DJ Akademiks Denies Taking Payola From Drake During Kendrick Battle Raekwon and Ghostface Killah Release Trailer for 'Only Built 4 Cuban Linx' Documentary SEVENTEEN Have a Good Time Being a 'Bad Influence' in Futuristic Video For Pharrell-Produced Single In bringing the ultra-personal and intimate album to life, Turizo assures us that 'the story [of my album] will be finished telling on the tour.' 'I was thinking about how to connect Manuel Turizo as a performer with where he comes from and where all these inspirations or all these stories a person lives originate,' he tells Billboard in an exclusive interview at his Miami home. 'All of that happens in my house. In [apartment] 201 there were heartbreaks, there were loves, drunken parties with friends, with family—all the stories are there. All the songs are born there, all the ideas are born there. I wanted to tell it in the same way and bring that 201 to the 70 cities where I'm touring.' He reveals that the stage is inspired by his childhood living room back in Colombia: '201 tour is basically Manuel Turizo's apartment that we're going to fill with people and create chaos,' he elaborates. While on tour, the Colombian artist will visit other Latin American countries like Chile, Costa Rica and Argentina, before launching the North American leg of the trek on Aug. 21 in Chicago. After visiting major markets like New York, Miami and Los Angeles along the way, he will return to Latin America to wrap up, with the last date on Dec. 6 in Guatemala. Above, check out our exclusive 'En Conversación,' where Turizo also opens up about his friendship with Shakira, his No. 1 Billboard hit 'En Privado' with Xavi, releasing new music and more. Natti Natasha Reveals She's Pregnant with Second Baby in Adorable Video
Four years after welcoming their first child together, Natti Natasha and Raphy Pina announced they are expecting their second baby together. The news was shared on Wednesday afternoon (June 11) via a short clip. The Dominican appeared to be announcing a new tour, at first. In the video, there's Raphy making some calls, Natti's stylist showing her different outfits that for some reason don't fit her, and a man planning out the logistics of the trek on a whiteboard. Their daughter, Vida Isabelle, also makes a cameo on the set. 'Empanada, broccoli, or cupcake? Between you and I, I'll eat them all!' Natti tells her daughter. Not dismantle it, but we're going to have to … there's a slight delay, so those dates really aren't going to work for us.' In the following scene, Natti is seen telling her stylist to find her an outfit that embraces not squeezes her. 'You'll understand. Some things can wait, but not this,' she says to the camera, pointing at her small baby bump. 'This blessing cannot be hidden, nor can it be paused — so the 2026 tour is confirmed, but with an expanded family,' she concludes, confirming a Natti En Amargue tour is on the horizon. The couple welcomed their first baby together in 2021 with the birth of Vida Isabelle on May 22 at South Miami Hospital. Vida weighed 6.8 pounds and was 20 inches long.
