Man accused of fatally beating dog in Ontario County

An Ontario County man has been accused of fatally beating his dog, according to the Ontario County Sheriff's Office. James R. Kinney, 66, of Farmington was charged with aggravated animal cruelty, a felony, in connection with the April 17 death of his 2-1/2-month-old puppy Goose, a female Collie mix, deputies said. Kinney called 911 that day to report that a neighbor had poisoned his dog and that his puppy was dead on his kitchen floor. Deputies and the Ontario County Humane Society responded to his home. The puppy was taken for a necropsy at Animal Health Diagnostic Lab at Cornell University in Ithaca, where results showed that Goose died from blunt force trauma to her rib cage, which lacerated her liver, deputies said. There were no signs of poisoning. Witnesses also told authorities that they saw Kinney dragging his puppy by her leash, causing her to scream, deputies said. Two cats were seized from Kinney's home as well. Both cats are being evaluated at the animal shelter, deputies said. Kinney is scheduled to answer the charge in Farmington Town Court at a later date. Dog found living in feces and garbage, Canandaigua man arrested

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — A Canandaigua man has been charged with animal cruelty after deputies say a dog was found in poor living conditions. On March 15, the Ontario County Sheriff's Office assisted in an animal neglect investigation after a dog named Louie was found wandering around Brickyard Road without an owner. Louie, a 12-year-old Jack Russel-type dog, was seen walking towards an open door at a home on Brickyard Road. Deputies said they followed Louie and saw garbage and feces in the entranceway. A neighbor told deputies the owner had not been seen for weeks. Deputies described the home as having a putrid odor due to the feces and garbage. Louie was seized by the Ontario County Humane Society, gave him a clean kennel, and evaluated him — they said his toenails were overgrown and made it uncomfortable for him to walk. On March 20, the Ontario County Sheriff's Office identified 61-year-old Dennis Keyser as Louie's owner and the homeowner. He was arrested and charged with animal cruelty/neglect. Keyser will appear in Canandaigua Town Court at a later date. Louie will remain at the Humane Society's shelter as the case is adjudicated. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Two charged with 11 counts of animal cruelty for unsafe keeping of dogs

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Two people have been charged with 11 counts of animal cruelty for keeping dogs in unsanitary conditions in an apartment in Geneva. Some of the dogs developed parvovirus, shutting down the county's shelter, according to the Ontario County Humane Society. The Humane Society said it received a report for unsanitary conditions in an apartment at 18 Middle Street in January, where 12 to 13 dogs were said to be living. An investigation prompted a warrant to be granted to the Humane Society to enter the apartment on February 10. It found 11 dogs, including a four-year-old Pitbull, three female Pitbulls, and seven puppies were living in 'deplorable conditions with urine and feces on the floor.' The dogs in the apartment were taken to the Ontario County Humane Society shelter for medical evaluations and treatment. Dawn Cameron, 42, and Dustin Bush, 39, have been charged with 11 counts each of animal cruelty, a misdemeanor. The two are set to appear in Geneva City Court at a later date. The Humane Society said a number of the dogs have developed parvovirus. As a result, the shelter has been temporarily closed for deep cleaning, and the affected dogs have been quarantined.
