Man accused of fatally beating dog in Ontario County
An Ontario County man has been accused of fatally beating his dog, according to the Ontario County Sheriff's Office. James R. Kinney, 66, of Farmington was charged with aggravated animal cruelty, a felony, in connection with the April 17 death of his 2-1/2-month-old puppy Goose, a female Collie mix, deputies said. Kinney called 911 that day to report that a neighbor had poisoned his dog and that his puppy was dead on his kitchen floor. Deputies and the Ontario County Humane Society responded to his home. The puppy was taken for a necropsy at Animal Health Diagnostic Lab at Cornell University in Ithaca, where results showed that Goose died from blunt force trauma to her rib cage, which lacerated her liver, deputies said. There were no signs of poisoning. Witnesses also told authorities that they saw Kinney dragging his puppy by her leash, causing her to scream, deputies said. Two cats were seized from Kinney's home as well. Both cats are being evaluated at the animal shelter, deputies said. Kinney is scheduled to answer the charge in Farmington Town Court at a later date. Deputies: Farmington man charged after fatally treating dog
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — A Farmington man has been charged with animal cruelty after his dog died from blunt force trauma, according to the Ontario County Sheriff's Office. Deputies started working alongside the Ontario County Humane after James Kinney called 911 to report a neighbor had poisoned his dog, and the dog was found dead on his kitchen floor. Both agencies found the two-and-a-half month old female Collie mix puppy, Goose. The next day, Goose was taken for an exam at Cornell University. The results showed Goose died from blunt force trauma to her rib cage, which lacerated her liver — with no signs of poisoning happening, according to deputies. Witnesses contacted police to report they had seen Kinney drag Goose by her leash, causing her to scream. Based on the evidence, deputies said Kinney was arrested and charged with aggravated cruelty to animals. Kinney will appear in Farmington Town Court, and two shorthair cats were taken from the house and are being evaluated at the shelter. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Two more Geneva PD members on leave ahead of criminal investigation
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Two additional members of the Geneva Police Department have been placed on administrative leave ahead of a criminal investigation by the Ontario County Sheriff's Office, a release from the Geneva Police Department confirmed Friday. Chief Ronald Eveland said the placement of the members on leave stems from Wednesday's announcement that 13-year-veteran Officer Michael Tapscott was placed on leave pending an investigation and subsequent arrest. Former Geneva police officer accused of selling drugs while on duty Officer Tapscott submitted a letter of resignation to Geneva Police Tuesday before he was charged with criminal sale of a controlled substance in the fifth degree, and official misconduct relating to the sale of a form of Adderall. It's alleged this happened while the officer was on duty and operating a police car. 'If true, the allegation against Mr. Tapscott is deeply unsettling. However, we trust and faith in our judicial system to conduct a thorough investigation resulting in the appropriate outcome,' Chief Eveland said in a statement. 'This is an extremely difficult time not only for our police department family, but for the Geneva community and for any innocent parties involved.' The Ontario County Sheriff's Office released a statement shortly after Chief Eveland's letter to the community. 'We understand that the allegations in this case are troubling, and the public wants to know the extent of criminality involved.' Sheriff David Cirencione said in a statement. The Ontario County Sheriff's Office remains committed to conducting a thorough, unbiased investigation, and we are going to continue to pursue our findings, wherever they lead. Further information will continue to be released as appropriate to maintain the integrity of the investigative process.' Sheriff Cirencione urged anyone with information relating to the case to contact or utilize 'Submit a Tip' on the 'OntarioSheriffNY' mobile app. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
