President Donald Trump Reacts to the Election of American Pope Leo XIV

The world has its first American pontiff: Pope Leo XIV, a native of Chicago, Illinois. 'Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was just named Pope,' President Donald Trump reacted to the news on Truth Social. 'It is such an honor to realize that he is the first American Pope. What excitement, and what a Great Honor for our Country. I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment!' Pope Leo XIV, previously Cardinal Robert Prevost, had an active online social media presence on X (formerly Twitter) under the username @drprevost. His last post, dated April 14, is a repost of Catholic writer and commentator Rocco Palmo, who wrote, 'As Trump & Bukele use Oval to [laughing emoji] Feds' illicit deportation of a US resident, once an undoc-ed Salvadorean himself, now-DC Aux +Evelio asks, 'Do you not see the suffering? Is your conscience not disturbed? How can you stay quiet?'' Palmo links to an OpEd authored by Bishop Evelio Menjivar, who writes in the Catholic Standard, 'Each day this situation is getting worse and more ominous. For weeks now, the federal government has pursued a 'shock and awe' campaign of aggressive threats and highly visible operations of questionable legality that go far beyond mere immigration 'enforcement.' Cardinal Robert McElroy has bluntly called this unfolding misery and injustice a 'war of fear and terror,' and it is.' Bishop Menjivar, an auxiliary bishop of The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington, adds, 'I urge government officers and support staff in the present situation to heed these words which echo through history. It is time now for you to reclaim your conscience. What you are doing is worth nothing if it is stained with unjust cruelty. That is not what America stands for. You too can and should speak out against this terror and infliction of suffering on people. You can refuse to be involved in oppression and these grievous assaults on human rights and dignity.' Elsewhere on the new pontiff's feed are criticisms of Vice President JD Vance, who met with Pope Francis shortly before Francis's death. He shared one opinion piece in the National Catholic Reporter titled 'JD Vance is wrong: Jesus doesn't ask us to rank our love for others.' LoC isn't key

Pak response isn't much. Kashmiris have condemned terror. Ensure they aren't targeted outside J&K Predictably, Pakistan responded on Thursday to India's retaliatory measures post the Pahalgam terror attack. Unsurprisingly, given that Pakistan has very few cards to play, its responses don't amount to much. Take the statement that all bilateral agreements, including the 1972 Simla accord, will be in abeyance. But the accord didn't prevent Kargil or multiple ceasefire violations by Pakistan. Pakistan's army has repeatedly violated the sanctity of LoC. So, if Islamabad is now saying there's no recognising an LoC anymore, it hardly makes any material difference to India. True, suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty by New Delhi has limited near-term punitive power. But as one of our OpEd columnists points out, suspension of the treaty can potentially be very costly for Pakistan. That's not the case with India vis-à-vis anything Pakistan threatened. What'll happen from here on is impossible to predict. But whatever happens GOI has an urgent job at hand. It needs to get to the bottom of the intelligence/security lapses that gave free entry and exit to Pahalgam terrorists. The point is not that there should be additional army boots on the ground in J&K. It's impossible to post security personnel in every tourist attraction or bazaar in Kashmir. The only thing that can thwart Pahalgam-style attacks is an intelligence network that feeds credible information to security forces. The best intelligence systems still rely on quality human intelligence or HUMINT. For that, any force needs some level of connect with at least some sections of locals. It's relevant here to note that many Kashmiris have openly and clearly condemned the Pahalgam terror attack. Pakistan's terror planners had clearly hoped that the incident would engender communal discord and reopen fissures in J&K. Instead, from north to south Kashmir, schools, colleges and shops remained closed in protest against what they termed as 'murder of Kashmiriyat'. But this message needs to be reciprocated by the rest of India – govts everywhere must take the strictest of actions against groups that harass Kashmiris. To the extent this shows that more Kashmiris today are becoming genuine stakeholders in the normalisation process, it's good news for Indian intelligence agencies. Note here that Kashmiriyat thrives only in democratic India, not in PoK where Islamabad has carried out ethnic cleansing and engineered demographic change. Therefore, GOI and the entire security apparatus must leverage this moment to quietly seek the support of Kashmiris to strengthen HUMINT. If Kashmiris' response to Pahalgam stays as it is, the battle against terrorism may get just a little easier. LA Times Owner Slammed for Cutting RFK Jr. Criticism From Writer's Op-Ed

A writer who penned an op-ed for the Los Angeles Times warning of the dangers of confirming Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as President Donald Trump's lead health czar called out the newspaper's owner after the piece ran without the critiques and a 'misleading' new headline. Political anthropologist Eric Reinhart's original op-ed headline 'RFK Jr's Wrecking Ball Won't Fix Public Health,' was changed to the complete opposite: 'Opinion: Trump's healthcare disruption could pay off — if he pushes real reform,' as seen in the published piece. Reinhart quicklu called out the paper's billionaire owner Patrick Soon-Shiong on X on Friday, writing, 'I am the author of this OpEd, which was given a misleading title and from which key lines were cut — lines that made very clear that RFK Jr. is dangerously ignorant, has absolutely no business near HHS, and is effectively a mass murderer in waiting.' The Chicago-based writer was even more blunt on Bluesky, where he wrote, 'My first and definitely last time working with the Los Angeles Times. Editing out the most urgent point of an OpEd in the minutes before sending to press while then also assigning a title and image that suggest an argument entirely opposite to the author's clear intent is pretty shi–y.' On X, Reinhart added, 'A vote for RFK Jr. is a vote for nothing but chaos, the opposite of the essential public-systems building I argue for in the OpEd, and mass death.' He further clarified that he expects headlines to change and for pieces to be edited, 'But editing out a very central and timely point in the minutes before sending to press while then also assigning a title and image that suggest an argument entirely opposite to the author's clear intent is bad.' Soon-Shiong's recent actions at the newspaper, including killing a pre-election endorsement for Kamala Harris, have prompted several resignations from top editors. Columnist Harry Litman cited what he called the tech billionaire's 'shameful capitulation to Trump' as his reason for resigning in December. During confirmation hearings this week, Kennedy tried to distance himself from his previous anti-vaccine stance, but senators, including Bernie Sanders, had ample evidence from previous statements and public appearances. Kennedy's cousin, Caroline Kennedy, has also condemned him as a 'predator' who has 'gone on to misrepresent, lie and cheat his way through life.'
