Newly freed recidivist arrested again with accomplice for snatch theft
SUNGAI PETANI: A man who just came out of prison last month has been arrested again for being involved in snatch thefts in the Kuala Muda district.
District police chief Assistant Commissioner Hanyan Ramlan said the 28-year-old local man was arrested alongside his 29-year-old accomplice in an operation codenamed Op Sentap on May 20.
He said the suspects, believed to be part of a gang dubbed "Geng Emy", had been targeting women.
"During the raid, police seized a Yamaha Y15 motorcycle, a helmet, a T-shirt, a pair of denim trousers and sales receipts believed to be proceeds from the thefts.
"With the arrests, we have solved four snatch theft cases in the district," he said during a press conference at the Kuala Muda district police headquarters today.
Hanyan said the main suspect had eight criminal records and three drug offences. He is also listed under police surveillance while his accomplice also had a drug record.
Both suspects tested positive for methamphetamine.
He said the duo would be remanded until May 27 and they faced a prison sentence of up to 20 years and caning, if convicted.
