Erie veteran gifted new stairlift after company sees story on JET 24

About a month ago we reported that a local veteran was in need of a stair lift after being diagnosed with cancer for a second time. Monday, he received a brand new one for free from medical equipment company Blackburn's. 'It touched my heart because he's a disabled veteran. I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for those veterans that fought back in the day for us,' said Sherry Warner of the home accessibility division of Blackburn's. Non-profit looking for stair lift to help local veteran Sherry Warner was following her usual daily routine. That includes watching our 6 o'clock news when she saw something that stopped her in her tracks. 'A non-profit organization is turning to the community to help a local veteran in need,' We said in our newscast on March 11. Warner works for medical equipment company Blackburn's and was able to arrange not only the donation for the stair lift, but volunteered to install it as well. 'I had to do something for him,' she said. 'This is our first one that we've done for a disabled veteran.' PennDOT extends hours as REAL ID deadline approaches Our veteran who asked for privacy is going to lose mobility due to a second cancer diagnosis that has spread. His bedroom is in the basement of his home and moving between levels is becoming increasingly challenging. 'About a week prior to me connecting with the veteran he had fallen at the bottom of stairs, cut himself on his head real bad,' said Fred Wienecke, director of Operation Griswold. 'We're going to be doing some other things for this veteran over the next coming weeks connecting him with some other services that are just going to make his life easier for him and his family.' Typically a stair lift starts out at three thousand dollars and is unique to each home, which is why it was difficult to find a used one and a new installation will be the perfect fit. PennDOT opens public survey for input on winter services 'Installing takes you to come to and measure the steps. He'll get on it down there in the basement on a chair and he'll put his seatbelt up and he'll ride upstairs to the kitchen and the chair will swivel and hell get out and he's in his kitchen,' Warner said. Both Warner and Wienecke believe there should be more resources for veterans in need. Wienecke wants to use his organization to become a connecting system. 'It hits you real hard here when you hear about a veteran struggling with mobility issues,' Wienecke said. 'We connect with amazing folks like the folks here at Blackburn that have selflessly come out here and volunteer their time and give this veteran an amazing gift, it changed his life.' Non-profit looking for stair lift to help local veteran

A non-profit organization is turning to the community to help a local veteran in need. Operation Griswold is dedicated to enhancing the well-being of local veterans. The organization currently is looking to raise funds for a stair lift that can clear 12 steps. This is for a local vet who is going to lose mobility due to a second cancer diagnosis — His bedroom is in the basement and a stair lift would help him maintain his independence. 'I realized I'm not alone' – 13th annual Women of Word performance provides catharsis for trauma victims One representative said it has been a challenge trying to find a stair lift because they are very specific to location. 'We've reached out to a couple of different organizations. The best we've come up so far is a company that you can rent a chair lift from… It's $1,400 to have it installed and then it's $160 a month to rent them, and unfortunately this gentleman doesn't have the financial means to do that,' said Fred Wienecke, co-founder of Operation Griswold.
