11 drink-driving arrests in Belfast over bank holiday weekend

So far 10 of those arrested have been charged to court. Road Safety Lead for Belfast Chief Inspector Pete Cunningham said: 'Worryingly, we are continuing to detect drivers drink/drug driving, which is alarming, as this places so many other road users in danger. "We all share the responsibility to prevent deaths and serious injuries on our roads. 'That's why we are appealing to drivers to remember the 'Fatal Five' and how to avoid them. Don't drink or take drugs and drive; slow down; don't be careless; always wear your seat belt and never use your mobile phone while driving.' Watch: PSNI launch their Operation Lifesaver Campaign One man was arrested in south Belfast on suspicion of kidnapping and other offences following reports of attempted car theft. Chief Inspector Cunningham said: 'Following a report of an attempted car theft in the University Avenue area shortly before 7.45pm yesterday evening, Monday 5th May, a 19-year-old male was arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit, kidnapping, taking motor vehicle without authority, and using a motor vehicle without insurance. 'He remains in police custody this afternoon, assisting with enquiries. 'In a second report, a 69-year-old man was arrested in the Cumberland Road area of Dundonald shortly after 4.50pm yesterday. 'He has since been charged with driving with excess alcohol in breath, and is expected to appear before Newtownards Magistrate Court on 3rd June. 'In a third report, a 32-year-old man was arrested in the Divis Street area of west Belfast shortly after 9.05pm yesterday evening. 'He has been charged with driving with excess alcohol in breath, and is expected to appear before Belfast Magistrates Court on 3rd June.' Chief Inspector Cunningham added that a 33-year-old man was arrested in the North Queen Street area of north Belfast shortly before 11:50pm yesterday evening. 'He has been charged with excess alcohol in breath and is expected to appear before Belfast Magistrates Court on 7th May,' he said. 'Finally, a 19-year-old man arrested by officers on patrol in Bruce Street area of south Belfast shortly before 1.30am today, Tuesday 6th May, has been charged to court with excess alcohol in breath. 'He is expected to appear before Belfast Magistrates Court on June 2nd. 'As is usual procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.' Chief Inspector Cunningham said that a further six people were also charged to court following reports of drink-driving offences at the weekend. He added: 'I would like my message to be clear; drink driving is a crime, and Police are continuing to be proactive in detecting those people who commit this offence. 'Reducing deaths and serious injury on our roads is a priority for us, and every single person who gets behind the wheel of a vehicle, after drinking or taking drugs are putting other road users and themselves at serious risk. "Just one drink can impair decision making. Just one drink can cause a collision. Just one drink could kill.'

Popular Belfast barber rushed to hospital and put into ‘medically induced coma'

Jay Miller, known as 'Jay the Barber', runs a business in north Belfast and went viral on TikTok after giving haircuts to the homeless in 2023. He previously shared his experience of growing up in the care system to mark Care Day. On Tuesday, the Jays Barber Club Facebook page announced news of his ill health. 'We are devastated to confirm that Jay was involved in an incident on Sunday morning. Jay had a seizure which resulted in a fall and head injury,' it stated. 'He was rushed to intensive care where he has remained in a medically-induced coma and is currently stable at these early stages. 'We thank you for your outpouring of messages … It is still very early days and this is all of the information we can give right now.' The post asked for people to respect the family's privacy. It added: 'The family have so much to deal with right now so please let them handle this situation in their own way at what is a very distressing time. 'Jays Barber Club will still operate as normal – please keep supporting the business, you can still book David and Aaron via their booksy account. You can still walk into the shop as normal. 'Barber courses still continue as normal with our normal group of teachers, nothing changes. We are still taking bookings for the next barber course. 'We will still continue to post on social media as normal. Jay has a family he supports and it is up to us to help this business run smoothly in his absence. We are a team at Jays Barber Club and will continue to help the name thrive until Jay is back on his feet. 'Finally – but most importantly of all – please keep Jay in all of your prayers. He needs them now more than ever.' Many people responded by wishing Jay a speedy recovery. In February, Ards Hospital's Quality and Improvement Care Centre invited young people who have achieved success since leaving the care system. At the event Mr Miller opened up about being raised in the care system. Watch: PSNI launch their Operation Lifesaver Campaign He has previously spoken about losing his mother to addiction when he was just five years old. Jay now has thousands of followers and uses his platform to inspire young people. His message to the young people he spoke to was to 'never give up.'

Resident in mixed housing estate warned they will be ‘burnt out' if union flags erected by masked men are removed

Earlier today it was reported a resident of the Altona Drive and Altona Gardens area in Lisburn was told 'their house will be burnt' if flags erected on lamp-posts by masked men were removed. Residents in the area were previously posted leaflets purportedly from the UFF. An Alliance Party MLA has hit out against intimidation in a Co Down housing estate. Earlier today it was reported a resident of the Altona Drive and Altona Gardens area in Lisburn was told 'their house will be burnt' if flags erected on lamp-posts by masked men were removed. Police have since said they would engage with "local community representatives and partner agencies around any complaints about flags". Last year, a new £16m mixed-use development was opened in Altona by housing association Choice. It consists of 30 three-bedroom homes, 46 two-bedroom properties and three four-bedroom houses. A further 11 properties have been specially designed for disabled tenants and are made up of three houses, two bungalows and six apartments. Residents in the area were also reportedly recently sent leaflets claiming to be from loyalist paramilitary organisation, the UFF (Ulster Freedom Fighters). Containing a logo for loyalist paramilitary group, the letters, which are strewn with spelling and grammatical mistakes read: 'This is loyalist Lisburn, not republican west Belfast. Anyone caught removing loyalist flags from lampposts will be dealt with.' In a statement, Alliance Lagan Valley MLA David Honeyford condemned the recent intimidation. Mr Honeyford has said: 'Everyone deserves to feel safe in their homes, and the fact that this is the second time in the last month we're seeing this kind of intimidation here in this area is especially repugnant. 'Our community belongs to everyone. We simply cannot accept any kind of sectarian demarcation of territory or personal threat of violence, and this must be roundly condemned by all. 'Lisburn is an overwhelmingly welcoming place. These individuals speak solely for themselves and offer nothing beyond increasingly futile attempts at dragging Northern Ireland back into the past. 'I've been in contact with the PSNI regarding this incident, and will continue engaging with authorities to ensure those responsible are dealt with urgently.' Residents in the area were previously posted leaflets purportedly from the UFF. Watch: PSNI launch their Operation Lifesaver Campaign A PSNI spokeswoman added: "Police received a report on Saturday 19 April about flags that had been erected in the area of Altona Drive, Lisburn. "Every case reported to police will be considered on an individual basis and, where offences have been committed they will be dealt with. "Officers continue to engage with local community representatives and partner agencies around any complaints about flags."
