In a widening espionage probe, startling details have emerged from the case of YouTuber and travel vlogger Jyoti Malhotra, who was arrested on charges of transmitting sensitive information to Pakistani intelligence operatives. The revelations, part of an investigation dubbed Operation Mir Jafar, suggest an organised effort by Pakistan 's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) to monitor VIP movement at strategic India-Pakistan border points.
News18 Hindi cited sources close to the investigation as saying that Malhotra and several other alleged agents were tasked with reporting on high-level movement at the Attari-Wagah border and within the Kartarpur Corridor – a visa-free passage that allows Indian pilgrims to visit the revered Gurudwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan. The information was allegedly sought under the guise of routine conversations, but forensic experts are now combing through seized digital devices to uncover deeper ties and deleted communications.
Forensic analysis is currently underway on the mobile phones and laptops confiscated from Malhotra and other detainees. Preliminary findings suggest that large swathes of data, believed to include chat logs with Pakistani handlers, were intentionally wiped. Investigators believe this was done to conceal sensitive exchanges that could confirm espionage activities.
One name that keeps surfacing in the probe is 'Ali Hasan', allegedly a Pakistani intelligence officer who directed agents on the ground. Intelligence officers say Hasan was particularly interested in who received official protocol during visits to Attari and Kartarpur, hinting at an effort to identify undercover Indian officials or VIPs operating under anonymity.
In one intercepted conversation, Malhotra reportedly told Hasan that she herself did not receive any protocol while visiting Attari. Hasan allegedly responded by saying that high-value or covert individuals are accorded a different, discreet treatment. He then instructed her to inform him of any such persons and to ensure they were isolated – even advising that certain individuals be seated separately inside the Kartarpur Gurudwara.
It has also come to light that Jyoti Malhotra attempted to approach a specific person inside the Gurudwara, seemingly under orders. However, the individual did not engage with her. In a message to her handler, Malhotra reportedly remarked that the person was 'not crazy", indicating perhaps that he was wary of a potential setup.
The scope of the investigation is broadening as agencies work to identify others who may have been operating under the influence or instruction of the same Pakistani operative. Each suspect is being interrogated separately to piece together the full extent of the network.
Investigators believe that the spy ring may have operated under the radar for some time, collecting seemingly benign but strategically valuable intelligence about movements, patterns, and security operations at key border sites.
Officials warn that more arrests may follow as electronic forensics and intelligence cross-verification progress.
