JU, Indian Army host sports camp at Bhaderwah Campus

Jammu, June 13 (UNI) The Jammu University and the Indian Army are jointly hosting a ten-day Sports Camp being organised by the Directorate of Sports and Physical Education at Bhaderwah Campus in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir. The event was inaugurated by Colonel Yogesh Chouhan, Commanding Officer, who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, while Major Kavinder was the Guest of Honour. Addressing the gathering, Col. Yogesh Chouhan laid special emphasis on the role of youth in nation-building. He encouraged students to adopt discipline, physical fitness, and a sense of responsibility towards society, drawing parallels between sportsmanship and patriotic values. He lauded the spirit of collaboration between the Indian Army and academia in nurturing young minds and building stronger communities in the region. The camp aims to promote a culture of physical well-being, teamwork, and leadership among the youth of the region. Over the next ten days, a wide range of activities, including adventure sports, athletic competitions, co-curricular events, and leadership-building exercises, will be conducted. This initiative is a testimony to the Indian Army's unwavering commitment towards youth engagement and constructive community outreach under Operation Sadbhavna, said an official. Dr. Daud Iqbal Baba, Director, Directorate of Sports and Physical Education, University of Jammu, presented the vote of thanks and expressed gratitude to the Indian Army for their continued support in youth development. He emphasized that such collaborations not only promote sports but also instill a spirit of discipline, teamwork, and national pride among young participants. Arif Haleem Khateeb, External Relations Officer of Bhaderwah Campus, also addressed the gathering. He highlighted the importance of institutional collaboration in creating a well-rounded and resilient generation through platforms that blend sports, education, and civic responsibility. Students from the Directorate of Sports and Physical Education, along with students from various educational institutions across the region, enthusiastically participated in the inaugural event, reflecting the positive response and excitement surrounding the camp. Organised under Operation Sadbhavna, the event centred around this year's theme — 'Unmasking the Appeal: Exposing Industry Tactics on Tobacco and Nicotine Products'. The initiative drew participation from local students and youth, emphasising the military's commitment to community welfare beyond national defence. The programme commenced with participants taking an anti-tobacco pledge. Army officials then delivered detailed presentations highlighting the sophisticated marketing strategies tobacco companies use to entice young people into nicotine addiction. The awareness session provided crucial insights into how tobacco companies exploit psychological vulnerabilities, particularly among teenagers and young adults. Officials explained how colourful packaging, flavoured products, and strategic placement in popular venues are designed to normalise tobacco consumption . The army officials highlighted the health consequences of tobacco use, including cancer, heart disease, and respiratory disorders. They presented statistical data showing how tobacco-related illnesses affect young users who begin consumption during their teenage years. Beyond health impacts, the session addressed economic consequences, highlighting how tobacco addiction drains family resources and perpetuates cycles of poverty in rural communities.
