Siouxland students learn about STEM jobs at festival
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) – Roughly 450 students from around northwest Iowa gathered in Sioux City on Wednesday to learn about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics-related careers.
The Siouxland STEM Festival brought 6th to 12th-grade students to the 185th Air Refueling Wing, Oracle Aviation, and the Mid America Museum of Aviation and Transportation. Combined, the organizations offered 40 hands-on exhibits and educational sessions, showing students possible career paths after high school such as nursing and even piloting.
One student said she had a great time.
'My first station was about, like, all the people that help take the X-rays,' said Sophia Scott, a student at the Westwood Community School District. 'They get to see if you have a fractured or a broken arm or if you sprained your ankle.'

Scott said she has an interest in becoming a nurse in the future, which is exactly what officials with the Northwest Iowa STEM Region are hoping for.
'It's such a big decision to make to know what career pathway to take,' Northwest Regional STEM Manager Mary Trent said. 'So the earlier that we can expose them to the wide variety of career choices out there, they can start making those decisions about 'I really like this pathway' or 'I like that pathway,' or 'I don't really like this way or that way.''
Officials say students got an exciting and educational day out of the classroom, and they hope some of the exhibits influenced students to pursue a STEM career.
