Cadillac's 2026 F1 Debut Draws Interest from Mercedes Reserve Driver

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. With the Cadillac Formula One team entering the grid in 2026, Mercedes reserve driver Valtteri Bottas has shown considerable interest in one of the two seats. He also confirmed that Cadillac has a few drivers on the list, and believes he is one of the best options for the new American outfit. Bottas ended his stint with the Sauber F1 team last year after a management restructuring that saw Mattia Binotto take the throne as the team's CEO and CTO. The team's driver lineup was replaced entirely by Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto ahead of Audi's full takeover in 2026. Zhou Guanyu became a Ferrari reserve driver, while Bottas rejoined the team he once experienced huge success with in the past alongside Lewis Hamilton - Mercedes. Despite a lackluster season with Sauber last year, Bottas confirmed that he isn't done with F1 just yet. MoreSpeaking on the Beyond the Grid podcast, Bottas revealed Cadillac's main priority at present. He said: "I don't think they're in a massive rush, they've been very, very busy trying to get a car on the grid for next year." Bottas then revealed why he is an ideal candidate for Cadillac and opened up on the timeline for deciding about the 2026 season. He added: "I think they have a few drivers on the list. I would imagine my experience will help because now I've raced in three different teams, with one of the teams having mega success. With Williams as well, we had some great results, so I hope I'm in a good position. "I know my timeline, when I want to know about next year and what plans I need to make, which I think is more or less August, which is a pretty good target for that, and hopefully, we'll hear something more soon. "For me, I actually see a very interesting project, something new to F1, an American team with maybe a different view to the sport. "If I were there as a driver, it would be very interesting because you can start from scratch. "The team starts from zero. You could actually make a big influence on certain things, which direction to go, and that would be very motivating and rewarding when the success comes. "I think the rule change is always a good point to jump in because you just never know, if you suddenly get it right, you might actually be doing really well from the get-go." Newsweek Sports reported comments from Cadillac F1 team principal Graeme Lowdon in April, who confirmed that the team was in talks with a few drivers but discussions hadn't reached an advanced stage yet. He said: "We are either planning or have spoken to you know probably seven or eight drivers all together. It would be no surprise that anybody who has got recent Formula 1 experience would be included in that list but I would stress that at the moment, any discussions are very preliminary. "They are just really trying to get to know what people's interest levels are, what their motivations are. We're certainly not in advanced discussions with any driver."

The race stewards ruled Verstappen had 'suddenly accelerated' before the collision and Russell said it 'felt very deliberate'. The stewards gave Verstappen a 10-second penalty which dropped him from fifth to 10th and left him 49 points off standings leader Oscar Piastri, who won Sunday's race. 'We had an exciting strategy and good race in Barcelona, till the safety car came out. Our tire choice to the end and some moves after the safety car restart fueled my frustration, leading to a move that was not right and shouldn't have happened,' Verstappen wrote on Instagram. You win some together, you lose some together. See you (at the next race) in Montreal.' Initially in the aftermath of Sunday's race, Verstappen had said that 'next time I will bring a tissue', responding to Russell claiming he set a poor example for young drivers. A series of setbacks The collision followed a series of setbacks for Verstappen, who had been in third and pressuring the two McLaren drivers in front before the safety car came out. Red Bull decided to bring Verstappen into the pits for fresh tires, even though the only ones he had left were slower hard-compound tires, a type that no other driver used. At the restart, Verstappen lost grip and was overtaken by Charles Leclerc, whose Ferrari made contact with Verstappen's Red Bull. Neither driver was ruled at fault for that. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Verstappen then went off the track while defending against Russell and Red Bull asked Verstappen to give up the place to Russell, apparently because the team expected Verstappen would be given a penalty. The stewards later ruled they wouldn't have taken action against the Dutch driver for that incident. Risking a suspension Verstappen needs to be careful in the next two races because the penalty for the collision with Russell also brought him penalty points on his licence, taking him to 11 in the last 12 months. Drivers get a one-race suspension if they hit 12 points in a year. Two of those points expire at the end of the month, but until then Verstappen needs to get through the Canadian and Austrian Grands Prix without any further penalty points. Max Verstappen Reinforces Drive To Survive Villain Image in Controversial Spanish GP

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Red Bull driver Max Verstappen was at the center of yet another controversy on track, this time after colliding with George Russell during the final laps of the Spanish Grand Prix. Red Bull ordered Verstappen to give up a position to Russell after the two cars collided during the closing stages of the race. Verstappen vehemently disagreed with the switch, arguing that he was not in the wrong and should be allowed to keep his place on the radio. On track, Verstappen looked like he was going to let Russell through, but Verstappen rammed into the Mercedes car in a fit of rage. A 10-second time penalty was given to Verstappen, which dropped him from P5 to P10. Max Verstappen of the Netherlands walks past the podium after driving the (1) Oracle Red Bull Racing RB21 during the F1 Grand Prix of Spain at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on June 01, 2025 in Barcelona, Spain More Photo byThe collision led to several reactions on social media condemning Verstappen's move on Russell. "OH MY WORD MAX VERSTAPPEN HAS JUST INTENTIONALLY CRASHED INTO GEORGE RUSSELL WHATTTT 🤯🤯," @formula1god posted on X. "Max Verstappen is a sore loser, and i will never have an ounce of respect for him," someone else posted on X. "Max Verstappen is an absolute disgrace. Disgusting personality, awful attitude, constant cheat and moaner. Driver and team alike are a massive let down to the sport. An embarrassment for F1 truly," a third posted on X. This kind of scathing criticism has regularly been issued to Verstappen for his tendency to drive extremely aggressively. During his fight with Lewis Hamilton for the 2021 Drivers' Championship, Verstappen had several moments where he clashed with Hamilton, many of which were captured in Netflix's Drive To Survive. This angle of the Hamilton-Verstappen crash is absolutely nuts. That halo has saved Hamilton 😦 — Sioned Dafydd (@SionedDafydd) September 12, 2021 Verstappen has garnered a reputation, whether fairly or unfairly, as a driver willing to crash or have contact if it means that his competitor is also knocked out of the race. This reputation leads drivers, most notably Lando Norris, to race carefully to avoid collisions, knowing that Verstappen will likely not provide the necessary space through certain areas. Last season, George Russell got into a war of words with Verstappen regarding the Dutch driver's on-track behavior and hot-headed nature. "People have been bullied by Max for years now, and you can't question his driving abilities. But he cannot deal with adversity," Russell said in December about Verstappen. "Whenever anything has gone against him, he lashes out. Budapest this year, the very first race the car wasn't dominant, crashing into Lewis [Hamilton], slamming his team.." Verstappen has said on numerous occasions that he does not mind what other people think about his driving style, claiming all he wants to do is win. While the four-time champion is known to drive beyond his car's limits and extract pace out of nowhere, that same ability translates over to his on-track fights, leaving Formula 1 as a whole left to take the brilliance with the erratic behavior. Create Account The four-time defending Formula 1 champion edged Lando Norris of McLaren by .065 seconds to take the top starting spot for Sunday's race. It was a rebound for Verstappen, who was penalized earlier Saturday in the sprint race and finished 17th. 'It's been a great qualifying, it worked out well and I'm very happy to be on pole,' Verstappen said of his 43rd career pole. It is his third pole through six races this season and second consecutive. It wasn't the result Norris hoped for from F1's newest father. There's a myth that having children can slow drivers because they suddenly become a bit more conservative. Verstappen and his partner, Kelly Piquet, announced the birth of a baby girl on Friday. 'Nod to Max, especially being a dad now,' Norris said. 'I was hoping it was going to slow him down a little bit, but it clearly didn't.' Verstappen agreed. We can throw that out the window for people mentioning it,' he said. And although he didn't reveal when Lily was born, he indicated the reason he skipped Thursday activities in Miami was to 'spend a few days at home to make sure everything is OK.' He also said the myth that parenthood can change a driver's style is ridiculous. 'I don't really listen to these kinds of silly things, you know,' Verstappen said. 'I just do my thing. There are enough racing drivers in the past that they became world champion after having kids. I don't even know where that (myth) comes from.' Norris is both the defending race winner — his Miami victory last year was the first of his F1 career and ended Verstappen's two-year winning streak at Hard Rock Stadium — and the winner of Saturday's sprint race. Kimi Antonelli, who at 18 years old became F1's youngest pole winner in history when he started first in Saturday's sprint race, qualified third for Mercedes. It is the first time he qualified higher than teammate George Russell, who was fifth behind current F1 points leader Oscar Piastri of McLaren. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Williams qualified sixth and seventh with Carlos Sainz Jr. and Alex Albon, while Charles Leclerc rebounded from crashing before the sprint race started to qualify eighth. He did not compete in the sprint race as his team worked to repair his Ferrari in time for qualifying. Esteban Ocon qualified ninth for Haas and Yuki Tsunoda was 10th to give Red Bull both its cars in points-paying position. Lewis Hamilton failed to carry momentum from his third-place finish in the sprint race held four hours before qualifying as the Ferrari driver was eliminated in the second round. His 12th-place effort was his lowest qualifying run since joining his new team. 'I don't feel in my heart that I'm — I mean, as I said, I'm trying everything, we're trying everything, I mean like the smallest, the smallest (margin) of time today I was out,' Hamilton said. 'It doesn't make a huge difference, but the fact is, you know, we are trying.' It rained early Saturday — hard enough to delay the sprint race — and the forecast calls for more weather issues on Sunday. The uncertainty on if it will be a wet or dry race has made it impossible for drivers to predict how the event will unfold. Check out our sports section for the latest news and analysis.
