The Scotsman Scran Awards have been developed to celebrate the individuals, establishments and products that make the Scottish food and drink sector what it is. From Michelin-Starred fine dining to coffee shops and celebrated chefs and spirits, the Scottish food, drink and hospitality scene is a melting pot of talent and innovation, and these awards will be celebrating the very best of this. The Scotsman has been championing Scottish food and drink on its dedicated site for ten years, and, in 2019, launched Scran, its food and drink podcast. A mulit-award-winning podcast, it's presented by food and drink editor Rosalind Erskine. Past episodes include the return of Spirit of Speyside and Feis Ile, how to celebrate Burns night as a vegan, the launch of a new dining concept with Michel Roux Jnr, a celebration of Scottish seafood, authentic fusion food with Julie Lin and talking whisky, gin and life after Outlander with Sam Heughan. We're also asking you to choose your favourite local restaurant. Scotsman food and drink editor Rosalind Erskine said: 'It was a really tough job to pick the winners for this year's awards due to how many quality and innovative businesses we have in Scotland's food and drink sector. Despite years of challenges, it's heartening to see so many passionate business people going above and beyond to showcase, and champion our wonderful Scottish larder. I'm looking forward to seeing the shortlisted finalists on the night of the awards.' Judge Julia Bryce added: 'The calibre of entries this year showcases the quality, creativity and passion those working in food, drink and hospitality in Scotland boast. It was truly inspiring to get an insight into their businesses and their teams, and while it made the judging process a difficult one with lots of deliberation, it shows we have plenty to celebrate and be proud of.' Musical play about 'the rise of influencers' on way to Glasgow
The question is at the heart of Andy McGregor's new musical, Meme Girls, which delves into the world of fame and friendship. It's coming to Glasgow's Oran Mor in June as part of lunchtime theatre series A Play, A Pie and A Pint. 'I wanted to explore two things that fascinate me,' says Andy. 'Firstly, the rise of online influencers – this new breed of celebrity who often don't have the 'traditional' talents we associate with fame, and I'm keen to unpack what captivates us about them. 'Secondly, I'm interested in the intensity of friendships and their breakups. Losing a friend can be as devastating as any romantic split, and that sense of loss can linger forever if it's never mended.' (Image: Tommy Ga-Ken Wan) Meme Girls is the story of Jade and Clare, who have been the best of pals since primary school while chasing their seemingly impossible dream of becoming successful musicians. Then, in a drunken stupor, Clare is caught 'being a daftie' on camera and quickly becomes a viral hit. Fame, not fortune, follows and the girls' relationship is pushed to its limits. Yana Harris and Julia Murray star as Jade and Clare, in a production which will feature brand new original songs. Andy McGregor (Image: Tommy Ga-Ken Wan) This is Andy's 10th show for A Play, A Pie and A Pint. 'I love making shows at PPP, and I believe Meme Girls delivers exactly what I enjoy in theatre, and what I know the Oran Mor audience appreciates: fantastically talented performers, a generous dose of laughs, perhaps a few tears, and an intriguing story that, for a wee magical hour, completely absorbs you in a world you never knew existed,' he says. 'Highlights for me are having my show about Irn Bru and chips, called Spuds, voted back as an audience favourite and having my one-man musical set in Millport - Crocodile Rock - appear on the BBC.' Andy adds: 'PPP takes chances on Scottish artists that other theatres don't seem as willing to take. 'It trusts in us to follow our own artistic noses and put something on stage that is uniquely us, and I thank them very much for those opportunities.' Meme Girls runs from June 2 to 7.

I saw Sophie Ellis-Bextor perform in Glasgow's Armadillo
Can we adopt Sophie Ellis-Bextor and call her our own? The London-born singer brought disco to the Armadillo on Saturday night - and a whole lot of enthusiasm for the city. And flattery about this Scottish city will get you everywhere with Glasgow fans, Sophie. (Image: Sophie Ellis-Bextor plays Glasgow's Armadillo in May 2025. Pic Calum Buchan.) (Image: Sophie Ellis-Bextor plays Glasgow's Armadillo in May 2025. Pic Calum Buchan.) Looking as fabulous as ever, dressed head to toe in sparkles of course, the star opened up proceedings with Relentless Love before amping up the atmosphere with her cover of Cher's 1979 hit Take Me Home. She said - while rhyming off facts about Glasgow with the same ease as a native - 'It's always a pleasure to be here. 'I love Glasgow very much, I do. 'The city has been such a big part of me and my music . 'I remember playing King Tuts, Oran Mor, The Garage, and Kelvingrove. 'It's always a pleasure to come back.' Showcasing those iconic velvet smooth vocals on Young Blood, the 46-year-old sounded exceptional while the new track Vertigo, taken from her upcoming album Perimenopop, gave fans a glimpse of what's to come. The party, however, really got started with a disco mix that included a cover of Modjo's Lady (Hear Me Tonight), ABBA's Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!, and of course, the song that launched it all for Sophie, Spiller's Groovejet (If This Ain't Love). What's great about Sophie is her ability to dance on stage like no one is watching. You're instantly drawn to her energy, and it's magnetic. She's geeky, truly knows who she is, and it's incredible to watch. Her voice is so unique, it gives her brand of disco an edge, and let's face it, you know when Sophie is singing. (Image: Sophie Ellis-Bextor plays Glasgow's Armadillo May 2025. Pic by Calum Buchan.) 'Shall we just move here?' And with a resounding yes from the fans, it was time for that song that was given a new life thanks to a little movie called Saltburn. Murder on the Dancefloor sent the crowd into a complete frenzy, and rightly so, it's an incredible pop anthem. Signing off with a smile, she said: 'Thank you, come see me again sometime,' before an encore of Bittersweet and a surprise appearance on the balcony to sing A Pessimist Is Never Disappointed.
