Former Tennessee QB Nico Iamaleava officially transferring to UCLA

The news of former Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava's transfer to UCLA leaked on Wednesday but he is now officially heading back to Southern California. UCLA's coaching staff has informed the other quarterbacks on its roster that Iamaleava is expected to transfer and play for the Bruins. MORE TRANSFER PORTAL: Latest news | Transfer search | Transfer Team Ranking | Football Player Ranking The news was first reported by ESPN's Pete Thamel. Head coach DeShaun Foster and offensive coordination Tino Sunseri have officially landed the No. 1 player in the transfer portal rankings. Iamaleava has three years of eligibility remaining. In his first full season as Tennessee's starter, Iamaleava led the Volunteers to the College Football Playoffs and lost to Ohio State in the first round. He threw for 2,617 yards, 19 touchdowns and five interceptions. Iamaleava also ran for 475 yards and three more touchdowns. Iamaleava split with Tennessee the morning before the annual Orange & White spring game on April 12th. He had skipped practice the day before as well. Reasons for the divorce have ranged from Iamaleava requesting a renegotiated NIL deal to Iamaleava and his camp hoping Tennessee would sign a strong group of offensive linemen and receivers in the transfer portal. Iamaleava was the No. 2 prospect in the 2023 Rivals250, just behind Arch Manning. He led Tennessee to wins over Florida, Oklahoma, and Alabama en route to a 10-3 record last season, his first as a starter. Vols end spring practices with Orange & White Game

Vols end spring practices with Orange & White Game Tennessee concluded spring practices Saturday with its 2025 Orange and White game presented by Cherokee Resorts & Entertainment at Neyland Stadium. The Orange and White teams tied, 14-14. The Vols entered the game with multiple student-athletes not playing, forcing head coach Josh Heupel to run the event as a 15th and final spring practice. Overshadowing happenings on the field was the departure of redshirt sophomore quarterback Nico Iamaleava, who was not at practice Friday. He announced his intention to enter the NCAA transfer portal when it re-opens April 16. Iamaleava's departure leaves the Vols with two returning quarterbacks in redshirt freshman Jake Merklinger and freshman midterm enrollee George MacIntyre, an in-state player who recently graduated from Brentwood Academy in Nashville, Tennessee. Early enrollees posted some stellar performances in the game Saturday. MacIntyre totaled three touchdown passes, while Merklinger finished with one touchdown. Freshman tight end Jack Van Dorselaer, another early enrollee, recorded three touchdown receptions and Radarious Jackson had one. MacIntyre completed two scoring passes to Van Dorselaer and one to Jackson. Merklinger's touchdown pass was completed by Van Dorselaer.

Nico Iamaleava out as Tennessee QB in NIL dispute

April 12 - Starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava is out at Tennessee amid a contract dispute, multiple outlets reported Saturday. Tennessee will play its spring Orange & White game without Iamaleava on Saturday, and he is no longer with the program, per reports. Coach Josh Heupel is expected to talk about the situation after the game. Iamaleava and the school had been in discussions over his name, image and likeness money. The Knoxville News Sentinel reported that Iamaleava, 20, wanted an increase from his more than $2 million annual NIL package, with ESPN adding he was seeking to double that amount. He didn't show up to practice on Friday and is not speaking with coaches, and that apparently was the final straw for Heupel and Tennessee. The spring transfer portal opens Wednesday, and Iamaleava can enter then. As a redshirt sophomore, he will have three seasons of eligibility remaining. Without Iamaleava, redshirt freshman Jake Merklinger and freshman George MacIntyre move into the lead for the starting job. Heupel also could look to the portal for an experienced QB. ESPN reported that officials from Tennessee's NIL collective already are in contact with representatives for potential 2025 quarterbacks. Iamaleava played sparingly as a freshman in 2023 before taking over the starting role last fall. In his first season as a starter, he completed 63.8 percent of his passes for 2,616 yards and 19 touchdowns against five interceptions, leading Tennessee to a 10-3 record and a College Football Playoff appearance. The Vols finished ninth in the final AP poll following their 42-17 first-round loss to eventual champion Ohio State. When Iamaleava was in high school in Southern California, 247Sports ranked him as the No. 2 quarterback and the No. 2 player in the nation, behind Arch Manning, in the Class of 2023. --Field Level Media
