UK charity marks 25 years of orangutan conservation in Sabah
KOTA KINABALU: UK-based charity Orangutan Appeal UK is marking 25 years of conservation work in Sabah, celebrating a milestone that underscores its long-standing partnership with the Sabah Wildlife Department. In a press release issued on Thursday (April 24), the organisation announced it will be holding a special anniversary event on April 30 at Sepilok Hall, Sandakan, to commemorate a quarter of a century of support for orangutan conservation, particularly at the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. Since 2000, the charity has contributed over RM14mil to various conservation efforts, including providing vital veterinary care, equipment, infrastructure, and supporting the rescue and rehabilitation of orphaned and injured orangutans. It also employs 13 local staff and has played a key role in raising international awareness of the challenges faced by the Bornean orangutan. Chairman of Orangutan Appeal UK, Jacha Potgieter, said the celebration is an opportunity to recognise the power of collaboration and the progress achieved over the past two decades. 'This anniversary is a chance to celebrate what's been achieved through strong partnerships, particularly with Sabah Wildlife Department, whose leadership and commitment have made so much possible,' he said. 'Orangutan conservation requires long-term dedication, and we're proud to continue supporting efforts here in Sabah, where the impact is both immediate and lasting.' The upcoming celebration will bring together guests, conservation partners, and local stakeholders to honour the shared journey and continued commitment to protecting one of the region's most iconic and endangered species. Despite the progress made, the charity said the threats to orangutans are far from over. However, it remains hopeful that with sustained public support and close collaboration with local authorities, the future of the species can be secured.
