Glasgow home is one of the city's 'finest private mansions'
Designed by architect John Burnet in 1862 and set within an elevated three-acre walled garden on Mansionhouse Road, Rawcliffe House was built for wealthy entrepreneur Alexander Bannatyne Stewart and was unrivalled in terms of opulence and detail, reflecting its owner's passion for art and literature in lavishly decorated motifs, stained glass windows, and carved figurative panels. (Image: Corum) In the early 20th Century, the house and estate became a Monastery and for 90 years was home to the Order of Carmelite nuns. In 2011/12, Rawcliffe was reborn when Westpoint Homes sensitively converted the house to accommodate thirteen bespoke apartments, retaining much of the opulent detail and generous proportions – enhanced by sophisticated and carefully selected fixtures and fittings – to create homes of distinction with a link to the past. Newly on the market, the most spectacular of these apartments is number thirteen, 'The Penthouse', which incorporates Bannatyne Stewart's beloved Art Gallery. (Image: Corum) Spanning around 2,300 sq ft over the entire width of the main attic space, its elevated position provides open views east and south across Langside and neighbouring Newlands to the Cathkin Braes. Accessed via an impressive residents' staircase – with amazing stained glass feature windows on the half-landing – the penthouse layout boasts a palatial 33ft open plan living/dining area and fully integrated designer kitchen (with adjoining utility). Next this, a curved staircase gives access to a carpeted mezzanine level bathed in light from an overhead painted rooflight – a charming additional space which currently serves as a snug/office/study but could also be an occasional guest/third bedroom. Off the main 32ft long hallway is a spacious principal bedroom with vaulted ceiling, feature fireplace, and turret en suite bathroom, while a door at the end of the hall opens into a private hallway. (Image: Corum) From here is the main bathroom and adjoining second bedroom with vaulted ceiling – except uniquely, this bedroom also has access out onto a small but perfectly formed, decked roof terrace, enabling the views to be fully appreciated. This home is so much more than the sum of its parts: it showcases the amazing detail, artistry, and skill that went into its creation - and rebirth, the latter incorporating modern-day essentials such as underfloor-heating (paired with wood flooring) and double-glazing. However, these take a back seat to the visual impact of ornate plasterwork, and jewel-coloured stained glass. (Image: Corum) Most striking of all, the open plan living/dining partly barrelled ceiling incorporates a series of stunning, lantern-style painted windows. Beautifully decorated and impeccably presented, the entire penthouse is a work of art. Outside, the now communal walled three-acre estate includes manicured and landscaped gardens, nature walks, seating areas, summer house, residents' allotments, and allocated residents' parking, yet Rawcliffe Gardens is also within walking distance for local shops, and other amenities. Offers over £495,000 are invited by Corum's Shawlands office.
