Morgantown voters to decide on camping ban, charter amendment during city election Tuesday
MORGANTOWN, (WBOY) — Registered voters in the City of Morgantown will have two ballot issues to vote on during the municipal election on Tuesday, April 29. The first is a proposed charter amendment that would allow the Morgantown City Council to approve a city manager that lives outside of Morgantown city limits. Currently, the city manager 'must reside in the City while in office.' If passed, the city code will change so that someone can live outside the city while in office 'only with the approval of Council.' Many areas that are widely considered to be in Morgantown and have a Morgantown address are not technically in city limits, including Brookhaven, Uffington, North Hills and the area near Suncrest Town Centre. The amendment also updates gendered language when referring to city manager candidates by replacing instances of 'he' and 'his' with 'the manager' and 'their.' New Morgantown pool will open in May; new skatepark, courts and more also planned The second item is a vote to fully repeal Ordinance No. 2024-29 titled 'Camping on Public Property,' which was passed last year. Even before the ordinance had passed, the Morgantown Coalition for Housing Action said it would start a petition to remove it. The petition with the needed 10% of eligible voters signatures was submitted in November. The ordinance, which makes it unlawful to camp on any city-owned property, has been suspending pending the April 29 vote. A 'yes' vote is a vote to fully repeal the camping ban, and a vote 'no' is a vote to allow it to be enforced. Voters can read a sample of the ballot issues they will see on April 29 here.
