Shamrock Shake is back — and so is Uncle O'Grimacey after decades away
The Brief McDonald's Shamrock Shake is returning on Feb. 10, available at participating locations nationwide. The fast-food chain is bringing back Uncle O'Grimacey, a long-lost McDonaldland character, to celebrate the seasonal shake. For every Shamrock Shake sold, McDonald's will donate 25 cents to Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC), with a goal of raising $5 million. LOS ANGELES - McDonald's is bringing back its beloved Shamrock Shake for the season, but this year, it comes with a side of nostalgia. Uncle O'Grimacey, a long-forgotten McDonald's character last seen in the late 1970s and early '80s, is making a comeback. The minty green Shamrock Shake returns to participating McDonald's locations starting Feb. 10, marking the unofficial countdown to St. Patrick's Day. But for longtime fans, the bigger surprise might be the return of Uncle O'Grimacey, Grimace's Irish uncle, who originally appeared in McDonald's ads decades ago. The backstory Uncle O'Grimacey first made his debut in 1975 as a festive McDonaldland character introduced to promote the Shamrock Shake. Unlike his famous purple nephew, Grimace, the green-suited, hat-wearing O'Grimacey hailed from "Sham Rock, Ireland," spreading cheer and enthusiasm for the seasonal shake. Though he was featured in McDonald's commercials and merchandise throughout the late '70s and early '80s, the character faded into obscurity. But now, McDonald's is bringing him back, with plans for him to travel the country spreading "Shamrock cheer" to fans. What they're saying McDonald's Shamrock Shake and Oreo Shamrock McFlurry will be available at participating locations from Feb. 10 through March 23. The shake, which first debuted in 1970, has become a seasonal fan favorite, often selling out at some locations. To celebrate the occasion, McDonald's is launching Uncle O'Grimacey-themed merchandise, including T-shirts and hats, which are available for pre-order. As part of the Shamrock Shake promotion, McDonald's will also donate 25 cents from every shake sold to Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC), aiming to raise $5 million to support families with sick or injured children. Dig deeper What started as a simple St. Patrick's Day-themed menu item in 1970 has grown into an annual tradition for McDonald's fans. The Shamrock Shake has inspired limited-time variations, including the Oreo Shamrock McFlurry, and has even been the subject of social media "shake hunts" as customers try to track down the elusive drink before it disappears. Now, with Uncle O'Grimacey's return, McDonald's is leaning into nostalgia, bringing back a character many thought was gone for good. When are Shamrock Shakes back at McDonald's? And who is Uncle O'Grimacey? What to know
Don't you love it when Shamrock Shake season returns to McDonald's restaurants each year? Guess what? It's that time of year again. And the shakes that the fast-food chain will be serving up this year are special - they are being released as "Uncle O'Grimacey" Shamrock Shakes to celebrate a piece of McDonald's history. Here's what to know. They will be at McDonald's restaurants in Rhode Island – and around the country – starting on Feb. 10, according to Alessa Garrido of the McDonald's Corporation. However, some McDonald's locations may have Shamrock Shakes as early as today, Feb. 4. No, they will only be at locations around the country for a limited time, according to the McDonald's website. They are green-colored shakes that appear at the restaurant every February, leading up to St. Patrick's Day in March. They are "made with creamy vanilla soft-serve blended with our minty Shamrock Shake syrup and topped with a whipped light cream," according to McDonald's. The shakes are available in small, medium and large sizes. There's also the Oreo Shamrock McFlurry if you want a little bit of crunch. This year, the shake's are being released under Uncle O'Grimacey's name. He is a relative of the purple McDonald's character known as Grimace, who first appeared in a commercial for the chain in 1975. "Uncle O'Grimacey is a green grimace," stated. "He wears a green cob hat, a vest with shamrocks on it, and carries a shillelagh. Every March, around St. Patrick's Day, he delivers Shamrock Shakes in McDonaldland. Uncle O'Grimacey is just one of many grimaces in Grimace's extended family." The shakes are made the usual way, but the chain brought back Uncle O'Grimacey for publicity reasons. Uncle O'Grimacey T-shirts, baseball caps and crewnecks are available for preorder now at According to the McDonald's website, With each Shamrock Shake sold, 25 cents will be donated to Ronald McDonald House Charities through March 23, 2025. McDonald's Shamrock Shake, Oreo Shamrock McFlurry are back. Are they like you remember
McDonald's has brought it back. No, we're not talking about the McRib. If you missed it in December, you'll have to wait. The fast-food giant returned the Shamrock Shake and Oreo Shamrock McFlurry on Tuesday. The Shamrock Shake is a milkshake made with vanilla soft-serve ice cream, artificially flavored minty green syrup and whipped topping. McDonald's debuted the first Shamrock Shake in 1970, and the cult classic has been returning to the menu around St. Patrick's Day each year since. The Oreo Shamrock McFlurry debuted in 2020 to celebrate the Shamrock Shake's 50th anniversary. The seasonal dessert is made with vanilla soft-service ice cream, artificially flavored mint green syrup and Oreo cookie pieces. You wouldn't think McDonald's would have a top-flight fast food dessert, but you would be sadly mistaken. Rereleased three weeks before Wendy's releases its Thin Mint Frosty, McDonald's has planted its flag as one of the best mint-cookie desserts. When you get it, it will look like the perfect dessert to promote the movie Wicked with the green and black. The best thing you can do is stir it up like a fruit-at-the-bottom yogurt. The McFlurry machine doesn't always mix the ingredients well. Once mixed, the Oreo pieces mixed with the soft serve and mint produce a near-perfect facsimile of the Girl Scouts Thin Mint flavor. It has a good cookie crunch and the flavors blend. There isn't one overwhelming taste. The flavor is better than the Dairy Queen Mint Oreo Blizzard. One final suggestion, the small is the perfect size. It's not too much and leaves you more than satisfied and less guilty. The Shamrock Shake is like drinking green beer on St. Partick's Day. It looks different than normal beer, but there's no real difference. The shake looked different than a vanilla shake, but there wasn't much of a difference in taste. It paled in comparison to the Oreo Shamrock McFlurry. It could have been because this was the first Shamrock Shake of the season made at this McDonald's. Still, it tasted like a vanilla shake with a hint of mint. The shake pales in comparison to the Grimace Birthday Shake of 2023 or the old Egg Nog shake that used to come out at Christmas – and has been on my Christmas list since McDonald's dropped it. The Shamrock Shake is still a traditional item, but like other nostalgic items at McDonald's, it doesn't live up to your memories. 1401 Governors Place, Bear 1 Addy Road, Bethany Beach 18733 Sussex Highway, Bridgeville 60 East St., Camden 2702 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont 38667 Sussex Highway, Delmar 1788N N.
