ROCKWELL CITY, Iowa – An Iowa mother accused of hurting her baby is expected to appear in court Monday in Calhoun County.
Emma Swanson, 22, of Fort Dodge, was arrested last month. She is charged with multiple acts of child endangerment and willful injury.

The crimes were allegedly committed between July and October of 2024 when Swanson lived in Rockwell City. Court documents say the child was about three months old when a diagnosis of failure to thrive was made.
The documents say Swanson intentionally deprived food, care, and medical attention for observed seizure activity, which caused bruising and fractures to her son. She is also accused of striking or shaking the baby, causing a partial skull fracture that led to subdural hematomas and subarachnoid hemorrhages that led to a stroke.
Swanson has entered a plea of not guilty to the charges. If convicted, she faces a maximum sentence of up to 35 years in prison.
