Orlando displays 49 ribbons to honor victims of Pulse nightclub massacre

This year marks nine years since the Pulse nightclub massacre, and the city held its annual remembrance to honor the victims. On Monday, the Pulse prayer ribbon was put on display, and it included 49 black ribbons to represent the 49 lives lost and one black ribbon for the Pulse massacre survivors. The ribbons are hung up every year as part of the city's annual remembrance events. After the tragedy, people in Provincetown, Massachusetts, sent our community prayer ribbons with the names of the victims written on them. The prayer ribbons will once again be displayed on the steps of Orlando City Hall. This year, in addition to the annual remembrance ceremony and blood drive, the city is also letting family members of the victims inside Pulse for the first time since the massacre. Small groups will be escorted inside the building for 30-minute visits before the structure itself is removed later this year. The prayer ribbons will be on display from Monday through June 16. Orlando police chief to brief city leaders on Downtown safety strategies

Orlando commissioners on Monday will revisit their discussion on safety in Downtown Orlando. It comes as businesses continue to complain about restrictions they say forced some owners to close up shop. At least a half dozen bars have shut down since a shooting that happened on Halloween night in 2024. That mass shooting by a teenager, as people were out celebrating, made national news and further stained the Downtown's already-damaged reputation. Downtown recently gained more unwanted attention after an officer-involved shooting in April. Police said the incident, which was captured on video, started when a man fired a gun into the air on a crowded sidewalk. Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith is expected to give a presentation Monday morning alongside one of the city's senior leaders who has been overseeing the response to the violence, which has included the reopening of Orange Avenue to traffic in an effort to lessen the street party atmosphere. Channel 9 will be there to hear their presentations and what city commissioners have to say afterward. City leaders have been trying to thin out the number of nightclubs, add more parks, and try to make Downtown Orlando more appealing to daytime and early evening businesses. Monday's meeting begins at 10 a.m. at Orlando City Hall. Be sure to tune into Eyewitness News at Noon for an update on this story. Click here to download our free news, weather and smart TV apps. A major event this weekend is impacting traffic in downtown Orlando. Orange Avenue is closed between the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts and Orlando City Hall. The closure is for a large weekend festival called 'IMMERSE.' The multi-day event begins Friday and runs through the weekend. The interactive festival will cover several city blocks with will require several road closures in downtown Orlando. The closures will be along South Orange Avenue, West Church Street, and East Pine Street. City officials suggest using the pick-up and drop-off area on Hughey Avenue to avoid parking.
