‘The Monkey' Is New On Streaming - How To Watch Hit Horror Comedy At Home
Christian Convery in "The Monkey." Director Osgood Perkins' The Monkey — the hit horror comedy based on a short story by Stephen King — is new on digital streaming. Read on to find out where you can purchase or rent it online. The Monkey was released in theaters on Feb. 21. The official logline for The Monkey reads, 'When twin brothers find a mysterious wind-up monkey, a series of outrageous deaths tear their family apart. Twenty-five years later, the monkey begins a new killing spree forcing the estranged brothers to confront the cursed toy.' Rated R, The Monkey stars Theo James as twin brothers Hal and Bill, Tatiana Maslany as the twins' mother, Lois, Elijah Wood as Ted (who is married to Hal's ex-wife), Christian Convery as the young versions of Hal and Bill, and Colin O'Brien as the adult Bill's estranged son, Petey. Perkins — who wrote and directed the 2024 horror hit Longlegs starring Nicolas Cage and Maika Monroe — adapted the screenplay from King's short story of the same name and appears in a supporting role in The Monkey as the twins' uncle, Chip. The Monkey's studio Neon formally announced Thursday that will be released on Friday for purchase or rent on digital streaming via premium video on demand. Prime Video has The Monkey listed for $24.99 to purchase and $19.99 to rent for a 48-hour period. The film will also be available to purchase or rent on several different digital platforms including AppleTV and Fandango at Home. If Osgood Perkins' surname rings a bell, it's because he's the son of late legendary actor Anthony Perkins — who starred as Norman Bates in the Alfred Hitchcock classic Psycho. Since the genre is a big part of Osgood Perkins' lineage, he said making horror movies is a part of his natural progression as an actor and filmmaker. 'The way I have come to look at my trajectory, if anybody gives a f--- about my trajectory, it's born into horror, right? Born into a royal family of horror, right?' Perkins told IndieWire in a February interview. 'And you kind of uneasily pursue it, because that's what some of us do — we follow the footsteps of the father, we're sort of intrigued by that path, and we can connect with the father through the follow. So, there's that, but I don't love horror movies.' Critics appear to love The Monkey, though, as Rotten Tomatoes reviewers gave the horror comedy a 79% 'fresh' rating based on 261 reviews. Audiences voting on the film were a bit more cool toward the film, though, giving it a 57% 'rotten' score on RT's Popcornmeter based on 1,000-plus verified user ratings. The Monkey was a hit at the box office with $39.1 million in North American ticket sales and $24 million internationally for a worldwide take of $63.1 million against an $11 million production budget before prints and advertising costs, The Numbers reported. The Monkey is new on PVOD on Friday.
