Malaysia's recognition of Kosovo's independence will not be forgotten, says president
PUTRAJAYA: Kosovo will never forget Malaysia's contributions during its most challenging times, including being among the first countries to recognise its independence in 2008, said President Dr Vjosa Osmani-Sadriu.
Osmani-Sadriu said Malaysia's recognition held profound significance beyond mere diplomacy, highlighting the enduring friendship between the two countries.
"Malaysia was among the first countries worldwide to recognise Kosovo's independence.
"That decision carried weight beyond diplomacy, it carried hope, solidarity and it carried the belief in our future and in our people. For that, our gratitude will never faint."
Osmani-Sadriu said this at a joint press conference with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as part of her four-day official visit to Malaysia.
She also said through discussions Anwar, Malaysia and Kosovo are exploring new approaches to enhance cooperation between the countries.
"We reaffirmed our commitment to stronger diplomatic ties, deeper economic partnerships and meaningful engagement in areas of common interest.
"The establishment of the (Kosovo) embassy (in Kuala Lumpur) sends a powerful message that our people should work even closer together and learn more from each other.
"To all of us here in Kuala Lumpur, it is a true privilege to stand on Malaysian soil and this will be remembered as a key milestone in the friendship between our two countries."
Osmani-Sadriu added that Kosovo and Malaysia have also agreed on the importance of expanding trade and encouraging greater investment in key sectors.
"There is significant potential — from agriculture to energy, technology to the halal industry.
"As such, we must strengthen business ties, create more job opportunities and open avenues for new prospects," she said.
Malaysia officially recognised Kosovo on Oct 30, 2008, becoming one of the first Asian countries to do so.
Diplomatic relations were formally established on March 18, 2011.
Last year, total bilateral trade between Malaysia and Kosovo reached RM28.55 million, with Malaysia's exports to the republic valued at RM25.92 million and imports at RM2.63 million.
