Louth man accused of stealing hospital patient's phone granted bail

Shane McKenny (39), no fixed abode, was brought in custody before that day's sitting of Drogheda Court. A garda gave evidence of arresting the defendant at 6.30am and charging him at 8.23am. She said that he made no reply after caution to each of six charges. He is accused of, on May 26 last at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, the theft of a Samsung phone valued €250 and, at Fr Connolly Way, possession of a Stanley blade knife without lawful authority or reasonable excuse. Mr McKenny is further charged with, on May 23 last at Hardmans Gardens, Drogheda, getting into a stationary vehicle; stealing a black flick wallet and its contents valued €175; theft of goods worth €18.75 at Circle K Mellifont, North Road, and using a debit card by deception to pay for items valued €26.30 at the same store. During a contested bail application, the arresting officer said it will be alleged that the accused had no permission to be in the Triage area after being discharged from the hospital. A lady left her handbag lying on a seat and it will be alleged that Mr McKenny took a phone from the handbag and was seen by another patient. Gardaí took statements from the injured party and a male patient. It will also be alleged that the phone was found on him. En route to Drogheda Garda Station the garda continued that it will be alleged he attempted to dispose of a Stanley knife in the back of a patrol car. He said that he had it for his own protection. Regarding the earlier incident, the court heard it will be alleged that at 2.15am on May 23, the defendant got into a car without permission at Hardmans Gardens and stole a black wallet and its contents before using a debit card for payment of €26.30 at Circle K at 2.50am. Judge Nicola Andrews granted Mr McKenny his own bail of €300, nil cash lodgement. He was remanded on bail to Drogheda Court on July 7. Conditions include that he not enter Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital except by ambulance or for a medical appointment, sign on twice daily at Drogheda Garda Station, stay off West Street, Drogheda, and out of all Circle K premises in Co. Louth. The accused, unemployed, was granted legal aid.

'The lovely lady' - tears and tributes for woman killed in horror collision

An elderly pedestrian killed when she was hit by a bus on Monday has been described as a 'lovely neighbour' who was 'the salt of the earth.' Named locally as Colette Campbell, in her 80s, she is one of five women who lost their lives in separate road crashes in counties Louth, Meath, Wexford, Clare and Tyrone over the weekend. Ms Campbell has been described by local councillor Bernie Conlon as 'a lovely neighbour with a heart of gold.' Ms Campbell, who lived on Main Street in Dunleer, Co Louth is understood to have just left her home when she was struck by a bus at approximately 12.20pm on Lower Main Street on Monday. Ms Campbell was transferred by ambulance to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda where she was sadly pronounced dead. Her tragic death has left the local community in shock Speaking to Irish Mirror on Monday afternoon, Cllr Conlon said: 'I and the whole community are in shock for the lovely lady, Colette Campbell, who lost her life. 'She was a lovely neighbour who had a heart of gold. I am a neighbour of the McCreanor and Campbell families. It's so sad that at her age she lost her life through tragic circumstances," said Cllr Conlon. 'I am deeply saddened by the loss of Colette which has saddened the whole community. "Everyone knew Colette and she was the salt of the earth," said Cllr Conlon. "I am also so sorry for the emergency services ambulance, the Garda, the paramedics and the fire brigade personnel that came upon such a heartbreaking accident and I feel for the bus driver as well.' The road was closed on Monday afternoon for a technical examination of the scene to be conducted and diversions were in place. Investigating Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward. In a statement, An Garda Siochana said: 'Any road users who were at Lower Main Street, Dunleer, between 12:10pm and 12:30pm on Monday, May 26 and may have camera footage (including dash-cam) are asked to make this footage available to Gardai.' Anyone with any information is asked to contact Drogheda Garda Station on 041 9874200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station. Ms Campbell's death brings to five the number of women who lost their lives in separate road collisions over the weekend. Mother-of-three and grandmother Theresa Morgan (63), from Ashbourne, Co Meath died when she was struck by a car on the Dublin Road (R135), in Ashbourne on Saturday. Ms Morgan, who was a pedestrian, was pronounced dead at the scene. Another female pedestrian, aged in her 20s, was killed in Wexford on Saturday at around 3pm on the R702 Curragraigue, Enniscorthy. Separately, a female cyclist, understood to be a Canadian tourist on a cycling trip to Ireland, was killed in an incident involving a tractor in Tulla, Co Clare on Saturday. And in Tyrone, Bernadette 'Bernie' Cranley, 82, who was from Lifford in Co. Donegal, died after a two vehicle crash off the A5. Ms Cranley was the driver of a silver Toyota Vitz which was involved in a collision with a blue Suzuki Vitara on the Mellon Road between Omagh and Newtownstewart near the Ulster American Folk Park around 12.30pm on Saturday.

Kern County Catholics express hope, excitement over introduction of new American Pope

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The world's 1.4 billion baptized Catholics watched in wonder and excitement at Thursday's introduction of the new Pope. That number included Kern County's 240,000 Catholics – many of them quite young. A number of things set Pope Leo XIV apart. One, of course, is that he's an American. Another is that he speaks multiple languages. Perhaps the most remarkable, is that he's only 69-years-old, which means young Catholics will grow up with this Pope. 69-years-old is young for a pontiff, and since the average age of the Pope at his time of death since 1900 has been 78, young Catholics are likely to know Pope Leo as the leader of their religion into young adulthood. Day 2 of the Conclave was a day of great anticipation for Kern County Catholics, young and old. There was palpable excitement outside downtown Bakersfield's Saint Francis of Assisi Parish. 'It's exciting, very thrilling,' St. Francis parishioner Karen Townsend said early Thursday morning. 'It's a joyful time.' When the white smoke came, it indicated that the 133 Cardinals in attendance had selected a new Pope. 'To me, this is very good,' said religion educator Dinah Pequeno. 'It comforts me. I trust this process and we're just very excited.' 'We were in Mass and we got a message,' said fourth grade teacher Stephanie Tobias. 'And everyone started whispering and so everyone is super excited.' PHOTOS: New pope elected on Day 2 of voting Erica Meyer, principal of Our Lady of Perpetual Help School, saw the Conclave as a learning experience. 'They've been waiting and they know a little bit about it,' she said of her students. 'They've been learning throughout the process, and just very inquisitive.' 'He kept mentioning peace,' said sixth grader Mateo Figueroa. 'I thought that was a good thing for a Pope to care about.' It's a relationship that will need to grow, as introductions have barely been made. 'I just wanted to know more about him and about what he cares about,' said seventh grader Jiselle Rivera. One thing that intrigues them – Pope Leo is an American! A Chicago Cubs fan, of all things. He speaks Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian and, most fluently, English. 'We can, like, understand him and relate to him better,' said seventh grader Annie Pryor. Adults feel the same way about the American Pope. 'I didn't expect that,' said Nicolette Thomson, who was picking up a toddler from the Our Lady preschool. 'I expected a different continent. Maybe Africa, maybe Asia. But I'm excited to see what an American Pope can bring to the Vatican City.' 'I think for Americans it's probably just national pride more (than anything),' said Jeanne Varga, also picking up a pre-schooler. 'But I think an American Pope, with everything that's going on in the world, is gonna be able to reach out.' One can only hope. A new generation of Catholics awaits his guidance. We're not asking for major projects, just a bit of awareness. Please watch out for litter, and dog owners, we need you to pick up after your pets and bin it. This continues to be an issue.
