Denver woman recalls meeting Pope Francis on her honeymoon, and being inspired to serve others
After his passing on Monday , Coloradans are remembering Pope Francis, including one woman who met him on his honeymoon. As the first pope from outside Europe, Pope Francis' ascension held special meaning for his followers in the Americas -- including in Colorado and at the parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe . Rocio Delgado Marquez, a parishioner from Denver's Guadalupe Church, has a special devotion to Pope Francis. "I specifically recall the day he became the pope," Delgado Marquez said. She was in college at Metropolitan State University Denver in 2013. That same year, she made a pilgrimage to see Pope Francis at World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro . "To be close to him, to be near him, to see the impact he had on the youth and everyone screaming, 'This is the juventud del papa -- we are the youth of the pope,'" she said. And for all the excitement of being surrounded by 3 million people, Delgado Marquez remembers the silence when Pope Francis led the youth in prayer. "You could hear the waves of Copacabana's beach in this silence, full of respect and love, and that's an experience that really sticks with me," she said. In 2019, Delgado Marquez got married and visited the Vatican on her honeymoon, where she received a blessing from the Holy Father. "That was a very special moment," she said. On that same trip, she attended a Mass with Pope Francis for the World Day of the Poor -- a tradition he started. She especially admires his humility and support for the world's marginalized people . "It warms my heart to hear him speak Spanish and speak directly to us," Delgado Marquez said. "His parents were immigrants. My parents were immigrants. He knows the struggle. And this community is full of immigrants." Delgado Marquez serves on the parish council at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. She says Pope Francis' teachings have enriched her life, which she hopes to devote to the service of others. "It all comes back to dignifying the human being and making them feel human," she said.

‘Easter blessing': Non-profit gives nearly 300 baskets
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Easter is a holiday celebrated by billions all over the world, including staff and guests at the St. Francis House in Sioux Falls. Sunday, they gave the neighborhood a nice Easter surprise. Volunteers get Camp Leif Ericson ready for summer Thanks to a partnership with CitiBank, the St. Francis House gives out Easter baskets to their own guests as well as people at Bishop Dudley, Union Gospel Mission and The Banquet. 'We line up the rest of the remaining baskets out front of the St. Francis house, and all of the neighborhood kids and the children who go to Our Lady of Guadalupe come over and experience the opportunity to pick out an Easter basket,' St. Francis House CEO Julie Becker said. 'It's great that they're doing things like this for our congregation since we're so close to each other,' Our Lady of Guadalupe congregation member Evelyn Duarte said. In total, the St. Francis House gave out almost 300 baskets this year. They were filled with sweet treats, stuffed animals and some toys. It helped make Easter a little brighter. 'I like to see how big of a difference it makes in the community,' Duarte said. 'It gives them hope. This gives them faith,' St. Francis House guest Arturo Celada said. 'It's good to bring the kids and see the kids come in and get the baskets from their loved ones.' 'It is a true Easter blessing because we want the St. Francis House to be seen as a safe home, not only for our guests to be able to live and rebuild their lives, but also for the neighborhood that they know that this is a place that people are welcome,' Becker said. Community-led movement aims to strengthen Sioux Falls The baskets help spread a message of what Easter is all about. 'Easter is not only about our religious beliefs, but it's also about being kind, helping others and bringing joy to others,' Becker said. The St. Francis House says there were somewhere between 40 and 60 baskets lined up outside Sunday. All of them were gone by about 10:30 Sunday morning. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. East Chicago church re-enacts annual Way of the Cross procession
For Alejandro Garcia, the congregation of Our Lady of Guadalupe's annual procession isn't meant to be fun. 'It's all a sad day,' Garcia said of Good Friday, the day Romans crucified Jesus. 'But it's important.' Garcia attended the annual procession with his daughters and mother. He's been attending the Via Crucis, the Way of the Cross procession, since he was a child. Following a two-hour service at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, participants marched through the streets of East Chicago, following Roman soldiers and Jesus, who was played by Eron Herrejon this year. The procession makes its way through the city's downtown and ends at Our Lady of Guadalupe. The procession stops at nine 'stations' through East Chicago, where volunteers and church leaders read scripture or a prayer. Actors then re-enact a part of the Biblical story. Rosa Cortez, a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe, read the Lord's Prayer at one of the stations. The prayer was typically read by Jesus and his disciples, and it teaches Christians how to pray. Cortez said church leadership asked her to participate for the first time this year. She's gone to the procession since she was a child. 'This is a big thing in our family and our community,' Cortez said. Faith is important to Cortez and her family, she added, and she thinks the procession serves as a good reminder of that for them. 'It helps you know that even if you're by yourself or not by yourself, there's always somebody there in Jesus,' Cortez said. The procession and its preceding service are bilingual, which Cortez enjoys because East Chicago has a prominent Latino community. According to U.S. census data, 56.5% of East Chicago's population are Hispanic or Latino. Cortez on Friday read the Lord's Prayer in English. 'It's nice that they talk in both English and Spanish,' she said. 'A lot of the new generation coming up knows more English, and some are still trying to learn Spanish. We try to incorporate our culture, and that includes Spanish.' Garcia also likes that the service is bilingual because it allows people to experience the procession equally, no matter what language they speak. Garcia's favorite part of the procession is that he can spend time with his daughters, who he walked side-by-side with throughout the entirety. 'It's really cool to share the story of Easter with them,' he said.
