AI And Sleep: Mattresses, Wearables, Pillows And More, Powered By AI

Artificial intelligence seems to be everywhere these days, and it's not just for creating avatars and polishing your resume: There are also plenty of applications for AI in sleep products that might help you to significantly improve your sleep quality. For instance, we tested the Niteronic Z6 Smart Anti-Snore Pillow firsthand and found it to be user-friendly and effective at curtailing snoring. As another example, the Oura Ring Heritage is a sleek sleep tracker that can provide in-depth insights every morning, plus personalized recommendations for the best sleep. 'Research has shown that a good night's sleep can help improve cognitive outcomes, improve heart health, improve mood and behavior as well as improve immunity,' says Dr. Anuja Bandyopadhyay, spokesperson and past chair of Artificial Intelligence in Sleep Medicine Committee, American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Quality sleep, she notes, can also benefit weight management and mental health. She adds: 'Responsible use of AI-enabled tools can provide more data, which can empower the clinician and the patient to perform shared decision-making regarding their sleep health.' Our roundup of products that use AI to improve sleep is by no means comprehensive, but it does include what we find most interesting on the market right now. Some AI-powered mattresses and bed frames 'utilize information from ambient temperature for temperature regulation as well as acoustic technology to determine change in snoring or position and thereby adjust to create a more favorable environment,' says Bandyopadhyay. Until recently, mattresses with AI functions have been out of reach to the average consumer. (Take the elite Heka mattress, for example, which cannot be purchased without first 'booking an experience,' after which it reportedly sells for anywhere from $10,000 to $280,000.) Below are some more affordable options for those looking to integrate AI into their sleep routine. Bryte, a brand used by premium resorts, offers smart mattresses that come with an included 'AI Concierge.' To alleviate pressure, 90 responsive points react to your movements and increase or decrease pressure in an effort to stop you from waking. The firmness level is adjustable in degrees from 0 to 100 and can be controlled independently for each side of the bed. The Bryte app reveals data about your sleep duration, stages and other metrics, then the AI Concierge interprets that data to analyze trends, offer adjustments and recommendations—and provide sleep science information. The Bryte Balance Pro comes with a 100-night trial and a 10-year warranty. This smart bed frame from Tempur-Pedic uses the power of AI to continuously monitor and record your sleep cycles and bedroom environment—with the goal of improving your sleep by detecting and responding to snoring as well as offering sleep coaching. The base is adjustable, with recline, incline, lumbar support and a zero-gravity setting. It has sound-wave massage capabilities that can zero in on your feet or head, a USB port for charging and using devices as well as the SoundScape Mode, which is an immersive relaxation program that plays soothing sound and programs through your mattress. The Sleeptracker-AI tech analyzes your sleep data to offer insights and adjustments through the companion app. The app also offers an AI-powered alarm that can automatically wake you as your lightest sleep phase is detected. If it detects snoring, it raises the head position by 12 degrees, which can be enough to halt snoring without waking the sleeper. For even more convenience, the system is compatible with Amazon Alexa. This base can be used on its own or placed inside many traditional bed frames, and it's delivered with white-glove in-room setup. The new smart bed from Tempur-Pedic isn't just a base: It's a base and mattress combined, which also features climate control. For anyone who sleeps hot (or next to a partner who sleeps hot), the ability to tailor an individual cooling level could be a game-changer for better sleep. 'The Dual-Zone Climate Control system allows each partner the ability to independently control and personalize the sleeping climate on their side of the bed,' says Jill Johnson, Tempur-Pedic's vice president of marketing. The Tempur-ActiveBreeze circulates air through the mattress, allowing a temperature range of up to 30 degrees cooler or warmer. This bed includes all of the technologies of the ProSmart base, including automatic Snore Response, Sleeptracker-AI coaching and insights, plus a suite of relaxation programs to help you fall asleep more easily. The AI app also lets you control your temperature and what sort of cycle you want your cooling or warming to take. The base is topped with a 13-inch-deep smart bed consisting of a heat-absorbing removable and washable cover on an air-distributing mattress. That sits atop Tempur-Pedic's Ventilated Advanced Relief Material—breathable, ventilated contouring foam that's also featured in the company's Tempur-LuxeBreeze collection. If you don't want to replace your existing mattress or base but are still interested in leveraging AI to boost your sleep quality, a mattress topper may be right for you. The EightSleep Pod 4 stretches over your mattress of choice and enhances it to include cooling tech and smart sensors for biometric tracking. The cover works in conjunction with a hub to route cooled water through tubing that's located on the underside of the mattress cover. You can interact with the cover's controls with the Autopilot app (available by subscription for $17/month) to gain insight about your sleep cycles and heart rate, adjust the temperature setting, detect snoring, program a vibration or thermal alarm and more. It delivers health reports and can even differentiate which sleeper is snoring. While you can control the system through the app, there are also controls on the cover itself if you prefer to interact with it directly through 'tap zones.' This is a considerate detail for anyone actively trying limit screen time before bed. Note that you will have to change out the filters in the hub periodically to keep the water in your system clean, but they are included with the Autopilot subscription, as is a two-year warranty. Rezet's AI-augmented mattress topper includes compression massage capability and thermal regulation that automatically adjusts for your comfort. The Rezet system collects and analyzes your health and sleep data and merges it with other sources, such as Apple Health or Google Fit, to provide wide-ranging insights. It zeroes in on your sleep quality, tracking any restlessness with changes in pressure, and provides daily updates and guidance for achieving optimal sleep quality. The Rezet Smart Topper also analyzes and processes data about your heart and respiration rates in concert with your individual physiology to provide tailored feedback. The topper is designed to sync with other smart third-party wearables, including the company's own upcoming smart ring. Pillows using AI integration offer some of the same anti-snoring functionality as larger items such as bed bases and mattress toppers, but for a smaller investment. When it comes to products marketed to target snoring, Bandyopadhyay acknowledges that if a sleeper is not contending with any sleep disorders, these products can be effective by changing the external environment. But she cautions, 'It is important to understand why the patient is not having a night of restful sleep... Having a conversation with your doctor can help determine whether there are any other symptoms of undiagnosed sleep disorders.' Sensors in the Nitetronic Z6 Anti-Snore Pillow detect noise and head position and make airbag-powered adjustments to curb snoring. The pillow, constructed from supportive memory foam with a cover made of velvet and 100% cotton, pairs with an app so you can make adjustments and monitor your sleep and snoring data from your phone. Forbes Vetted senior sleep and mattress editor Bridget Chapman had her snoring in-laws test the Nitetronic pillow for three month; while using it, they consistently saw improvement in their snoring habits, scoring it a 9 out of 10 and ultimately deciding they needed a second one. The brand notes, however, that the pillow should not be used by sleepers under 18 years old or anyone who has an intracranial electrode or pacemaker. It also states that anyone with sleep apnea should consult with their doctor before trying the pillow. Nitetronic offers an adjustable anti-snore pillow for side sleepers as well, the Z10 Side-Sleeping Anti-Snore Pillow, on sale now for $99. Read Chapman's full review, and also be assured that the company offers a 30-day trial, so you can see if the pillow works for you before committing to the purchase. The AI Motion Pillow is made with CertiPUR-US-certifed memory foam and has AI-adjusting and learning capabilities. As you use it over time and it collects your sleep data, it learns from your snoring sounds and patterns, which helps it distinguish you from a sleeping partner—or a revving engine outside your window. Once the system detects that you've begun snoring, it gently inflates airbags to adjust your position in order to open your airways. The AI Motion Pillow can also sync with other wearables and third-party devices to offer a wider understanding of your health metrics. The more it learns about you, the better advice and feedback it can offer to improve your sleep quality. The companion app delivers all of your sleep metrics and can even record the instances of your snoring, if you'd like to hear what you subject your bedmate to. The pillow also comes with extra padding that you can use to adjust its height, if necessary. One caveat if you purchase the AI Motion Pillow: The power plug is a Korean-style one, so you must use an adapter to make it compatible with a U.S. outlet. If you'd prefer to sleep on your favorite pillow while controlling your snoring (versus buying an entirely new one), the Nora Gen 2 is made to simply slip underneath any pillow. It works in a similar way to the above pillows, by detecting snoring and inflating to adjust your head position and open your airways. A microphone-enabled 'pebble' that resembles a computer mouse sits on your nightstand or near your bed and is alerted when you begin snoring and then learns over time. It communicates with the base floor unit that pumps air through a tube into the under-pillow device, encouraging you to shift position. The sensitivity and inflation height are adjustable, so you can determine the best settings for you. A companion app (available at $5.99/month) collects your sleeping and snoring data and records your snoring instances for playback. The company states that an independent, third-party study determined the Nora Gen 2's AI detection 'catches snores before they happen' and is effective at stopping snoring. You can try it with a 30-night trial period and also use your FSA or HSA funds to purchase it. If you're more interested in tracking sleep and health data than cutting down on snoring, there is a wide array of AI wearables and other tech to outfit your bedroom with that you may find valuable. 'Earlier sleep trackers may have utilized only accelerometer technology to detect change in motion to determine whether you're asleep or not,' says Bandyopadhyay. 'Modern-day AI-enabled tools utilize sensors to report multiple parameters with the help of advanced algorithms.' The Google Nest Hub is a Forbes Vetted favorite and our editors' pick for the best nonwearable sleep-tracking tech. It's a multifaceted smart home device with many uses, including its excellent sleep-tracking capabilities. Just set it up next to your bed (with no obstructions between you and the product) and its sensors will pick up the room temperature, your snoring, heart rate, restlessness and other data. Over time, it learns your sleep routines and habits and offers tips and suggestions to improve your sleep. Sync it with Google Fit for an even more complete look at your health metrics. The Google Nest Hub can also send you to sleep with relaxing sounds and function as a sunrise alarm, which are good additions to your sleep routine. Google promises that your sleep data stays within your device and is not used by the company for ad personalization. Note that the Nest Hub's Sleep Sensing feature is only available with the 2nd Gen device; it's not designed to work with the first generation or with the Nest Hub Max. Android users can get constant tracking of health metrics including temperature, heart rate and blood oxygen via Galaxy AI with the Samsung Galaxy Watch 7. Not only does this device offer advanced capabilities for counting steps, logging races and tracking workout routines, but it also has one of the most advanced AI algorithms for sleep. With your phone no farther than 2 feet from you and snore detection enabled through the Samsung Health app, the FDA-authorized sleep apnea feature proactively monitors for signs of the condition. The watch can start you off each day by showing you your 'Energy Score,' which it calculates based on your night's sleep, your heart rate and how many steps you got in. Note that the Galaxy AI features require you to have a compatible Samsung phone and the Samsung Health app. The Ultrahuman Ring Air (compatible with both Android and iPhone) is focused on sleep and recovery, as opposed to tracking workouts, although it does count steps; we named it the best nonsubscription smart ring. It can tell you how many times you tossed and turned throughout the night and offers suggestions to decrease your restlessness. This device not only tracks and learns your caffeination schedule, sleep stages and circadian rhythm, but it can also monitor your menstrual and ovulation cycles. There is a small extra charge ($24/year; $38/two years) to enable the ring to offer proactive heart monitoring—but this could be a small price to pay for detailed insights, as the ring can detect early signs of atrial fibrillation. The Ultrahuman Ring Air doesn't offer some of the fitness functionality that other similar products do, but if your main priority is analyzing and improving your sleep quality, it may be the best choice for you. As a bonus, the company offers custom engraving for $39, making the Air a thoughtful gift. We also love that Ultrahuman sends a ring-sizing kit before you actually order your ring so you can get the correct size the first time. But what we love the most about this product is the one-and-done purchase with no subscription fees. The Sleepon Go2sleep 3 is designed to monitor the quality of your overnight rest, including heart rate and blood oxygen levels. Once synced with the app, the device will break down your sleep quality, letting you know how much of your night you spent in each sleep cycle. It uses AI to analyze the findings and offer personalized improvements to your sleep routine. Unlike many other smart rings, you only wear the Go2sleep 3 at night. It's not designed to count steps or track any other sort of metrics other than sleep-related insights. (And if that's all you're looking for, why pay a higher price?) Your data can be imported into PDFs or Excel spreadsheets, which is handy if you're trying to monitor your detailed sleep records over time. While it doesn't have a display, the Whoop is worn on a wristband like a watch and meant to stay on its user 24/7. It tracks fitness, stress, temperature, heart rate, blood oxygen and sleep metrics, and even has a haptic alarm designed to wake you at the optimal time in your sleep cycle. Once it learns your routines and goals, the AI-powered device offers personalized feedback through the app. Unlike other wearables, what you're paying for with Whoop is the membership, and there is no charge for the device. Annual membership varies from $199 a year to $360 a year, depending on which plan you choose. (You can also opt for the flexibility of a monthly plan instead of yearly, but that comes at a higher rate.) At the moment, membership includes the Whoop 4.0 device, but if more advanced hardware is released in the future, active members will receive the new generation at no additional cost. Membership fees are also eligible for FSA and HSA reimbursement. Our recommendation for the best sleep tracker ring overall, the Oura Heritage is a sleek and effective tracker that is effortless to wear. The company has invested heavily in AI learning for over a decade and continually works to improve its algorithms. Oura does require a subscription membership ($5.99/month), which provides you with in-depth sleep insights every morning, temperature, blood oxygen and heart rate monitoring and personalized recommendations for the best sleep quality and healthier habits. Members who use the app in English (more languages are on the way, according to the company) also have access to the Oura Advisor, which helps users deep-dive into their metrics and insights and create plans to achieve individual health goals. You can ask the Advisor questions and it helps you interpret your insights and contextualize them based on your data and previous interactions with the AI model. You can even ask the Advisor to 'remember' important facts and milestones that affect your health or fitness, like if you're recovering from a surgery. A high-tech baby monitor is an essential parenting tool these days. The CüboAI Smart Baby Monitor 3 uses artificial intelligence to alert you if your baby's face is covered or if they roll over in their crib. It can also help you record your baby's growth, by measuring height from the camera's vantage point above the crib. It retains video for three days, so you have access to play back any events or adorable memories. The Sleep Sensor Pad goes underneath your baby's mattress and can detect breathing, crying and other movements. It provides daily sleep summary metrics so you're as informed as possible about their sleep habits. Not only can the system detect when your baby is in the crib, sleeping or awake, but it can also be set to play selected lullabies to help them get to sleep. You can continue to use the baby monitor as your child grows into a toddler. The included monitor stand allows you to watch your child play and walk and help you keep track of where they are; tell it where the line is, and the system will alert you if your child strays into a 'danger zone.' The system is compatible with iPhone and Android and requires use of the CüboAI app. The Forbes Vetted sleep team stays abreast of all new and exciting releases and developments in the world of sleep products. We regularly conduct hands-on testing of many products, and deep-dive into research on others. Girish N. Nadkarni, MD, MPH, cautions against overreliance on data that isn't diagnostic—or necessarily accurate. He points out that these devices have been known to misclassify some sleep events, 'a risk that may lead to unnecessary anxiety,' he says. Bandyopadhyay agrees, advising: 'The best option is to utilize this data to create awareness and then discuss the findings with a medical provider.' 'Additionally, smart rings may offer inconsistent readings during high-intensity activities or due to poor sensor contact,' Nadkarni says. He also urges smart ring users to be aware of how their health information is stored and shared and to ensure that robust privacy protection is in place to safeguard their personal data. With the caveat that they can report inaccuracies, Nadkarni believes that 'smart rings are increasingly reliable for tracking trends. For resting heart rate, devices like the Oura Ring often match clinical-grade measurements.' He points out that smart rings excel at identifying 'relative changes, making them useful for spotting deviations.' Our recommendation for the best sleep tracker ring, in fact, is the Oura although wearables can ultimately improve your sleep routine as well as help to diagnose and manage certain sleep disorders, Bandyopadhyay cautions that 'the information provided by these variables should always be reviewed with a medical provider.' 'Like any other tool, its value and use lie in the user,' Bandyopadhyay says. 'For the past five to ten years we have seen an explosion of consumer wearable devices capable of tracking sleep. This has generated significant awareness regarding quantity and quality of sleep… Furthermore, innovative AI algorithms can now offer more information regarding the quality of sleep, which is also helpful in creating awareness." Nadkarni additionally notes that smart rings 'can help foster proactive wellness by encouraging regular movement, guiding relaxation techniques and supporting behavioral changes before minor issues escalate into major concerns.' AI's role in improving sleep hygiene will only continue to grow. For instance, AI platform which has been gathering sleep-related insights from objective data, studies, medical publications and more since 2017, partners with companies in the research and development stage of creating sleep products.
