Berkane go 2-0 up after first leg of Confederation Cup final

Berkane go 2-0 up after first leg of Confederation Cup final BERKANE, Morocco - Morocco's Renaissance Berkane scored two early goals but failed to add any more as they beat Simba of Tanzania 2-0 in Saturday's first leg of the African Confederation Cup final to take the advantage into next week's return. Berkane were heavily fancied going into their fifth Confederation Cup final in the past seven years and went ahead after eight minutes through Mamadou Camara, rising unmarked to head home from an in-swinging corner. A second goal from Oussama Lamlioui followed six minutes later in a blistering start that left the visitors looking shell-shocked and threatened a deluge of goals. Berkane, who have won the competition twice previously, had the ball in the net for a third time on the hour mark but Youssef Mehri's effort was ruled offside after a lengthy VAR check. Simba, whose previous appearance in a continental club competition final was 32 years ago, had few chances in the game but have home advantage for the return leg in Zanzibar on May 25. Berkane ease past ASEC to reach TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup semi-finals

Published: Wednesday, 09 April 2025 Moroccan side RS Berkane booked their spot in the semi-finals of the 2024/25 TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup with a second straight 1-0 victory over ASEC Mimosas of Côte d'Ivoire on Wednesday night. Playing at their home ground, the Berkane Municipal Stadium, the two-time champions left it late but did enough to seal a 2-0 aggregate win over the Ivorian giants. Oussama Lamlioui's 75th-minute strike proved decisive as the Moroccan champions controlled proceedings to complete a deserved quarter-final triumph. Having already edged the first leg in Abidjan by the same scoreline, Berkane returned home in front of a passionate crowd with the advantage and showed no intention of defending their lead. Coach Moine Chaabani's men dominated the game, creating a host of chances but were wasteful in front of goal for large spells. Their breakthrough came with 15 minutes remaining when Meloui capitalised on sustained pressure to slot home the only goal of the night, sending the home fans into celebration. ASEC Mimosas, despite their rich history in African football, were unable to mount a comeback and bowed out of the tournament without scoring a goal over the two legs. With this result, RS Berkane – champions in 2020 and 2022 – move one step closer to adding a third CAF Confederation Cup trophy to their cabinet. The club has developed a strong pedigree in the competition and remains one of the most consistent performers in recent seasons. Their semi-final opponents will be Algeria's CS Constantine, who advanced after a dramatic penalty shootout win over USM Alger in an all-Algerian quarter-final. For ASEC Mimosas, the loss brings another frustrating end to their continental campaign. Despite a promising group stage, the Ivorian club failed to find their rhythm over the two-legged tie, falling short against a more cohesive and clinical Berkane side. The TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup semi-finals now feature RS Berkane vs CS Constantine, and Simba SC of Tanzania against South Africa's Stellenbosch FC, setting up an exciting conclusion to the tournament.

Berkane Players Pay Tribute to Tragic Flood Victim Youssra

RS Berkane players walked on the pitch wearing a white T-shirt with a picture of Youssra on it in Sunday's game against Moghreb Tetouan – paying a heartfelt tribute to the nine-year-old who tragically lost her life in the floods that swept through Berkane. Youssra and her father were caught in a raging flood last week. Rescue teams managed to save her father but Youssra was tragically swept away in a sewer pit. It wasn't until late into the night that rescue workers discovered the lifeless body of the child. On the field, RS Berkane put on a dominant display with a 2-0 win that inches them even further to grab the Botola Pro championship title. Oussama Lamlioui broke the deadlock in the 56th minute, before Yassine Labhiri sealed the victory in the 69th minute. Berkane has now extended their lead to 17 points over Wydad Casablanca and AS FAR with just six fixtures left to play in the league. Berkane is now one point away from lifting the Botola Pro title. A win or a draw against Ittihad Tangier will see them crowned champions. After the loss, Moghreb Tetouan freezes its points count with just 15 points – leaving them precariously in the relegation battle. Tags: botola profloodsMoghreb TetouanRS BerkaneYoussra
