8th grader from San Diego exits national spelling bee
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — An eighth grader from San Diego who participated in the Scripps National Spelling Bee on the East Coast was knocked out of the competition Wednesday. Duaa Ouznali, a 13-year-old from Bright Horizon Academy, ended her run tied for 74th place, according to media outlets covering the competition. The spelling bee kicked off Tuesday at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in Maryland. PREVIOUS: 13-year-old San Diego student competing in national spelling bee Ouznali was one of over 240 spellers from around the world vying for the title of national spelling bee champion. In the first round, Ouznali advanced after correctly spelling the word 'telegnosis,' which is defined as the 'knowledge of distant happenings obtained by occult or unknown means,' according to Merriam-Webster. During the second round, Ouznali correctly defined the word 'malfeasance,' meaning 'wrongdoing or misconduct especially by a public official,' per Merriam-Webster. She then passed a written test before heading to the quarterfinals. The San Diegan then correctly spelled the word 'shinplaster,' meaning 'a piece of privately issued paper currency,' the UT reported. Ouznali made it to the fifth round of the competition but did not advance after she incorrectly gave the definition for the word 'temporal,' which is defined by Merriam-Webster as 'of or relating to time as opposed to eternity.' To make it to the national level, Ouznali beat out more than 90 other spellers at the regional spelling bee at the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA in San Diego, which took place on March 6.
