Troy historic museum fire ruled ‘accidental': Investigators

TROY, Ohio (WDTN) — Fire investigators have offered their official incident report for a fire that ravaged Troy's oldest building back in December. The Overfield Tavern Museum was significantly damaged after a fire broke out in the early morning hours on Dec. 7, 2024. While parts of the building survived, the museum lost a large amount of priceless historical content, and a complete renovation is needed to reopen. As renovation efforts begin, investigators have completed their assessment of the fire. The Ohio State Fire Marshal's Office ruled there was no evidence to support any criminal activity related to the cause of the fire, therefore it as been ruled accidental. Due to the extent of burn damage, investigators could not determine the exact system that caused the fire. Demolition on the museum began earlier this month. The museum says they are hoping to have a portion of the building reopened before July of 2026, to celebration America's 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. ‘You cannot replace that;' Ohio's oldest log tavern goes up in flames; cause now determined

The Ohio State Fire Marshal has released its final report on the fire at the Overfield Tavern Museum, the oldest building in Troy and the oldest log tavern in the state. [DOWNLOAD: Free WHIO-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] As previously reported by News Center 7, the Overfield Tavern Museum caught fire on Dec. 7. Museum officials shared part of the report on social media this week, where the state fire marshal said there was 'no evidence of criminal activity related to the origin or cause of this fire' and ruled the cause as accidental. >> PHOTOS: Historical Overfield Tavern Museum destroyed in fire The fire originated in or around the boiler room, which is in the center of the building. That area contained electrical and mechanical systems and the storage of combustible items and cleaning supplies. 'As the fire developed, it spread to other common combustibles and structural members of the building, moving in an upward and outward direction from the boiler room, with the intensity and severity of burn damage being more severe near the boiler room, lessening in severity as you move away from the area of the boiler room,' the post stated. 'The building was home to a pretty special collection of early Miami County material, much of which was unfortunately lost in the fire,' The Museum's Board President Ben Sutherly previously told News Center 7. Sutherly said their 'worst fears unfortunately were realized' when he and others associated with the museum got the the scene of the fire. 'We're mourning the loss of a lot of irreplaceable items inside that museum and obviously the significant damage that's happened to the structure,' Sutherly said. Last week, crews demolished what was left of the most recent additions to the tavern. Officials said they would save the original log building and renovate the log house, as well as the log tavern area. The Troy Foundation gave the museum a $75,000 grant, but the museum said it would cost a lot more than that to rebuild. The museum will be holding a silent auction on March 29 where officials will be deaccessioning a few hundred items from our museum's collection. 'This is a critical step in our long journey back from the December 7, 2024 fire that devastated our museum,' officials shared on social media. [SIGN UP: WHIO-TV Daily Headlines Newsletter]

Crews make discovery while restoring Troy's oldest building

TROY, Ohio (WDTN) — Last December, a massive fire severely damaged the oldest building in Troy. As crews began work to salvage the building, they discovered something they weren't expecting. In December of 2024, the Overfield Tavern Museum went up in flames, nearly destroying the interior of one of the oldest buildings in Ohio. The structure was salvageable and now museum employees are working hard to restore the historic building. Cedarville student involved in Pennsylvania plane crash As crews begin work to save the museum, they started removing the exterior parts of the structure that were destroyed. These additions were not part of the original building, but added later to improve the integrity of the structure. By removing those exterior pieces, clean-up crews uncovered parts of the initial structure, finding that the original walls and back log were in tact and visible. 'Those portions of the building covered by those additions were protected for a number of years, about 175 years,' said Chris Manning, executive director of the Overfield Tavern Museum. 'And that's why we can still see the original siding.' These portions of the wall appear to be untouched by the fire and still in fair condition. Manning says this is great news, as restoring the building is very important for the city of Troy and its history. 'They recognize that it is part of the core history of the community. In fact, we like to say it is where the community of Troy was born,' said Manning. The museum says they are hoping to have a portion of the building back open to the public in time for July 2026, when the United States will celebrate 250 years since signing the Declaration of Independence.
