Ed Sheeran: Seven people proposed at my concert
Seven people proposed to their partners at one of Ed Sheeran 's concerts, the singer has revealed.
Sheeran, 34, admitted that fans proposing to their partners while he's performing his popular love songs, including Perfect and Thinking Out Loud, has become a 'trend'.
Asked by Richard E Grant, the actor, whether he had heard of the 'Ed Sheeran effect' on people popping the question, the British singer-songwriter responded: 'There's become a trend at my concerts where, in either Perfect or Thinking Out Loud, you just hear little cheers from around the stadiums and it is people that get engaged.'
Grant joked that 'marriage proposals globally have gone up 400 per cent' because of the singer's chart-topping love songs.
Sheeran said: 'There was one concert where there was like seven proposals, and in my head on like the sixth and seventh one, I was like, 'Imagine being that bloke, where you've planned it out and then five people propose before, and then it just sort of takes all the wind out of the sails, and you're like might as well do it now.'
'It's definitely become a trend,' he added.
Andrew Gunning, from Crewe, proposed to his wife Tanya during an Ed Sheeran concert in Manchester in June 2022 because he is 'her favourite artist'.
The 38-year-old, who popped the question while Sheeran played his song Overpass Graffiti, told Cheshire Live after the event that he had been 'bricking it' and that he was 'worried the proposal wasn't good enough for her.'.
He said: 'I knew that I'd never be able to get the proper reaction from her during a meal or something.
'I know she hates big crowds and wouldn't like the attention. But we were going to Ed Sheeran on the Sunday after getting back from Majorca on the Friday, so I thought I'd ask her there.'
The proposal, filmed by nearby concertgoers, subsequently went viral on social media, with the video being viewed more than four million times on TikTok.
'When Perfect came on, that was it'
Ryan McNulty, 37, decided to propose to Nicole Cairns, his girlfriend of five years, while Sheeran performed his song Perfect during the Belfast concert in 2022.
He said: 'That song Perfect, that's our song and when that song came on, my sister had the ring and she gave me it and that was it.'
Sheeran and Grant discussed the proposal phenomenon during an appearance as guests on Scott Mills's BBC Radio 2 breakfast show to unveil his new song Azizam, which the singer explained means 'my dear' in Farsi.
'It means 'my love' or 'my dear' in Farsi, and the producer I made it with is Persian. It was something I've just never done before and it was exciting and new,' he said.
Grant, 67, who is promoting Death Of A Unicorn, a new comedy horror film, also asked Sheeran who he would like to play him in a biopic.
The Grammy-winning musician said Rupert Grint, the Harry Potter star and fellow redhead who played him in his music video for Lego House.
