Court hears evidence against midwife accused of causing baby deaths and disabilities

Now former midwife Yolande Maritz Fouchee is facing 14 charges in the Gauteng High Court, Pretoria after several babies she delivered were born disabled and some died. Image: Zelda Venter The Pretoria midwife Yolande Maritz Fouchee, who allegedly caused babies to either die or be born disabled while she was in charge of delivering them, is facing 14 charges in the Gauteng High Court, including one of culpable homicide. Fouchee, 48, now a deregistered nurse, denied any wrongdoing, and in a lengthy plea, explained that she did everything according to the book when she delivered the babies. But one of the mothers, Carien Möller, on Tuesday testified that her daughter Sophia was born in July 2019 with cerebral palsy. She is blaming Fouchee for her child's condition. Fouchee, in turn, claimed that the child was born this way because Möller had a bladder infection while she was pregnant and she refused to take antibiotics to clear it up. The court was told that baby Sophia was blue in the face when she was born and that she had to be resuscitated for about 20 minutes before she could breathe normally. The 14 charges against Fouchee include nine charges of assault on four mothers and their babies. It is claimed that she gave the mothers Cytotec and Oxytocin before delivering the babies, allegedly to hasten the birthing process. They were allegedly told that it was a Rescue Remedy which they were to consume. The court heard that Fouchee handled between 16 to 24 deliveries a month at her You&Me delivery centre in Pretoria East, for which she charged from R16,000 upwards per delivery. One of the charges Fouchee is facing is that she called her daughter in to assist her with the deliveries. Her daughter, the prosecution said, does not hold any medical qualifications. The culpable homicide charge against Fouchee follows the death of a baby, born in 2020, who had died within minutes of her birth. Video Player is loading. It is claimed that Fouchee was unable to deliver the baby and refused to transport the mother to hospital, so that she could give birth via an emergency C-section. It is claimed that Fouchee instead used forceps in an attempt to deliver the baby, despite the pleas of the mother that she wanted to go to hospital instead. It is alleged that her actions during labour resulted in oxygen deprivation to the fetus, causing injury to the brain. The baby was born blue and unresponsive, and the prosecution claimed that it cannot be ruled out that the baby's bleeding on the brain was caused by the forceps used by Fouchee. The mothers are all due to still testify in Fouchee's trial, with Möller being the first mother to take the stand. She explained that she saw Fouchee's credentials on Facebook and she was very impressed with them. As she delivered her first child via C-section, she wanted a natural, water birth for her second child. A doula who assisted Möller in her delivery told the court that Fouchee had a 'we call the baby protocol' in place, which meant that she (Fouchee) usually decided when a baby should be born. She then had methods at hand in which to enhance the births, the court was told. The trial is proceeding before Judge Papi Mosopa, who is sitting on the bench with an assessor, who is a medical doctor, to assist him.

Kotak Bank Q4 preview: PAT may fall up to 16% YoY on higher provisions. NII could rise by up to 9%

India's third largest private lender by way of market capitalisation – Kotak Mahindra Bank (KMB) will report its Q4FY25 earnings on Saturday, May 3, 2025 where the bank is expected to report a double-digit fall in its net profit on a year-on-year basis due rise in its provisions . According to estimates given by four brokerages viz. Nuvama Institutional Equities, ElaraCapital, IIFL Capital and JM Financial , Kotak Mahindra Bank could report a PAT decline between 11% and 16% in the January-March quarter of FY25. The bottomline range could be from Rs 3,700 crore to Rs 3,457 crore. While Elara sees the sharpest cut, Nuvama remains most conservative among its peers. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Men With ED Say This New Pill With Tadalafil And Oxytocin Works Like Magic Male MD Learn More Undo The Net Interest Income ( NII ) could jump 6-9% YoY at Rs 7,306 crore - Rs 7,500 crore. In this, Elara remains most bullish on topline growth while JM is most conservative. Here's what they recommended: Nuvama Nuvama has estimated a Q4FY25 PAT at Rs 3,700 crore, reflecting an 11% YoY decline but a 12% sequential increase. The NII is pegged at Rs 7,430 crore, marking an 8% growth over the previous year and a 3% rise from the preceding quarter, driven by a steady expansion in the loan book. Live Events However, net interest margins (NIMs) may decline to 4.89%, down by 39 bps YoY and 4 bps QoQ, indicating slight compression in lending spreads. The Pre-provision operating profit (PPoP) is expected to rise to Rs 5,740 crore, registering a likely 5% YoY increase and an 11% sequential rise. The lender's loan book may grow to Rs 4,32,500 crore as on March 31, 2025, up 15% YoY and 5% QoQ while deposits could see a 9% YoY uptick and 4% sequentially growth to Rs 4,90,100 crore, . On the asset quality front, slippages may rise to Rs 1,810 crore, a likely increase of 38% over Q4FY24 and 9% over Q3FY25. ElaraCapital Elara expects Kotak Bank to report a PAT of Rs 3,457 crore for the quarter under review, registering a decline of 16% on a YoY basis, though improving 5% sequentially. The NII is expected to rise to Rs 7,500 crore in Q4FY25, likely up 9% YoY and 4% QoQ, supported by healthy growth in advances. Meanwhile, the net interest margin (NIM) for the quarter may be reported at 4.4%, reflecting a contraction of 5 basis points both annually and sequentially, indicating mild pressure on spreads. Private lender's PPoP may come in at Rs 5,396 crore, showing a marginal 1.2% YoY decline but a 4% improvement over the previous quarter. On the business front, the company's loan book could expand to Rs 4,36,100 crore at the end of the January-March 2025 quarter, likely witnessing a 16% gain compared to the same quarter last year and 5% higher sequentially. As for the deposits, an 11% YoY and 5% QoQ growth to Rs 4,97,200 crore is seen. The credit costs may rise to 0.7%, up 43 basis points YoY but down 9 basis points sequentially. 'Expect stronger traction on loan growth (helped by acquisition of StanC PL portfolio). This will aid NIMs and is likely to be higher than peers with bank benefitting from reducing SA rates The bank will likely see better print on asset quality with variance at play on MFI and unsecured portfolio. Monitor related commentary. Monitor management commentary on tech spends, sustained growth, and unsecured portfolio,' Elara said in its preview note. IIFL Capital KMB's profit after tax is likely to be at Rs 3,620 crore, registering a decline of 12% YoY but a healthy growth of 10% sequentially. The annual dip in profitability could be attributed to a sharp rise in provisions, while the quarterly growth suggests some operational recovery. The NII is expected to come in at Rs 7,350 crore, marking a 6% increase compared to the same period last year and a 2% rise over the previous quarter. This growth was supported by a consistent rise in the loan book and stable interest margins. The PPoP may stand at Rs 5,610 crore, growing 3% year-on-year and 8% QoQ. The company's loan book could rise to Rs 4,32,600 crore, reflecting a robust 15% YoY growth and a 5% increase from the previous quarter. On the liabilities side, deposits stood at Rs 5,02,800 crore, registering a 12% YoY and 6% QoQ uptick. The provisions could surge significantly on a YoY basis to Rs 800 crore, representing a sharp 205% rise compared to the same quarter last year and a modest 1% increase sequentially. JM Financial Kotak Bank may report a PAT of Rs 3,650 crore for Q4FY25, marking a 12% YoY decline but a 10% QoQ increase. The NII is estimated at Rs 7,306 crore, which could go up 6% YoY and 2% QoQ The lender could report PPoP at Rs 5,668 crore, showing a 4% increase from the same quarter last year and a stronger 9.4% jump compared to the previous quarter. The loan book is likely to register a growth of 16% in Q4FY25, slightly higher than the 15% seen in Q3FY25 but lower than the 18% recorded in Q4FY24. On the liabilities side, deposits may grow 14% in Q4FY25, down from 16% in Q3FY25 and sharply lower than the 24% growth seen in Q4FY24. The NIMs are likely to remain steady at 4.7% in Q4FY25, the same as the previous quarter but lower than 5% in the corresponding period last year, reflecting some pressure on yields. Meanwhile, credit costs increased to 0.8% in Q4FY25, remaining flat on a sequential basis but significantly higher than 0.3% in Q4FY24. Kenya: Giving Women Second Chances by Improving Access to Sexual and Reproductive Health Services

At just 20, Esther Wamuhu from Laikipia West is determined to rewrite her future. A few years ago, she had to put her education on hold after an unplanned teenage pregnancy. Now, she is ready to return to school, finish her secondary education, and pursue her dream of going to university. But there was one major hurdle—access to affordable family planning. "I wanted a good family planning method, but I just couldn't afford it," Esther recalls. Then, one day, she heard an announcement on her local radio station about a free health outreach happening in her village. She didn't hesitate to go, and the visit turned out to be life-changing. "I received a five-year family planning method for free. Now, I can go back to school without the fear of another pregnancy," she says with relief. For countless women like Esther, access to quality sexual and reproductive health services remains a challenge in Kenya—especially in informal settlements and far-flung arid regions where high rates of maternal mortality, teenage pregnancies, and gender-based violence are common "We bridge the gap by taking these services directly to the communities," explains Dr. Timothy Panga, Chief Officer for Health in Laikipia County. "Many women might never visit a health facility unless they are facing a critical condition, so outreach programs like these are essential." Recognising the urgency of these needs, the World Health Organisation (WHO) is making significant strides by providing sexual and reproductive health kits worth USD 100 000 to six priority counties —Kajiado, Samburu, Laikipia, Siaya, Marsabit, and Tana River. These kits contain essential supplies for family planning, post-miscarriage and post-abortion care, obstetric emergencies, and support for survivors of gender-based violence. This initiative is rooted in a comprehensive 2024 needs assessment conducted by the WHO and Ministry of Health that identified critical gaps in training, essential sexual and reproductive health supplies, and community engagement. By strategically addressing these challenges, WHO Kenya is enabling more women and families to access life-saving reproductive health care services. For instance, in Samburu, a pressing shortage of Oxytocin—a crucial medication for preventing postpartum hemorrhage—was swiftly resolved, ensuring timely and effective care. Additionally, the establishment of designated post-abortion care rooms in the county health facilities ensures women receive care in a safe and confidential environment with the highest standard of support with dignity and respect. As of February 2025, 6 post-abortion care rooms have been set up in the 6 counties which were equipped with essential supplies and medicines by the WHO. The WHO Kenya is also supporting the capacity building of healthcare workers to deliver comprehensive sexual and reproductive health services. Through on-the-job training and mentorship by specialists, County healthcare personnel are gaining advanced skills in post-abortion care and family planning, thus bolstering their confidence to provide quality and comprehensive sexual and reproductive health and rights services. More than 216 have so far benefitted from the on-job training and mentorship in 36 facilities in 6 counties. Additionally, to address the gaps identified in 2024 around improving access in hard-to-reach and underserved communities, WHO is expanding its impact through integrated outreach services, which have already reached over 3,300 people in Laikipia County alone, with 260 receiving family planning services and 1,147 undergoing cancer screenings. County leaders have lauded this initiative for its positive impact on women's health. Governor Joseph Ole Lenku of Kajiado County expressed gratitude, emphasising the value of WHO's collaboration in reaching underserved populations. 'We do not take this support for granted and truly appreciate our collaboration journey with the World Health Organization,' he said. As WHO Kenya continues to work with the government to expand access to quality reproductive healthcare, the focus remains on strengthening health systems and empowering communities with knowledge and resources for sustained gains in sexual and reproductive health and rights.
