The Brief We are learning new information about the victims of a wrong-way crash in Ozaukee County. The wrong-way crash happened on I-43 just north of Belgium early Monday, May 26. Family members are crushed by the news a couple that had been married 27 years is no longer with them. OZAUKEE - We are learning more about an Oostburg couple killed in a wrong-way crash over the Memorial Day weekend. What we know A family member tells FOX6 News Jay, 56, and Nicole Horne, 51, were killed and their daughter was seriously hurt in the wreck that happened in Ozaukee County. The Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office said a 34-year-old Milwaukee man, who officials identified in a news release as Ace Vue, was driving the wrong way on I-43 when he crashed into the Horne family's car. A family member said her brother and his wife were picking up their daughter at the airport – and were just a couple miles from home when the crash happened. What they're saying "No way. Those are my first words. I can remember just yelling, no way," said Pauline Heyman, a family member. Heyman got a call that shattered her world. "He is gone. He is physically gone from my world," Heyman said. Their 22-year-old daughter, Allissa, was in the back seat and was seriously hurt. "Somebody was going the wrong way. Somebody made a mistake. A mistake that caused the lives of two people and almost a third," Heyman said. Dig deeper The Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office said the crash happened on I-43 just north of Belgium. The wrong-way driver from Milwaukee had life-threatening injuries himself. Officials have not said why the driver was going the wrong way. "I have a niece and nephew that have to bury their mom and dad," Heyman said. Heyman said Allissa suffered two broken femurs, a broken ankle and wrist. She has been in and out of surgery. And that's where we need everybody to step up for this family. Because they lost their mom and dad," Heyman said. Heyman told FOX6 News Nicole and Jay were married for 27 years. PORT WASHINGTON, Wis. (WFRV) – Authorities have released the names of those involved in a fatal wrong-way crash on Interstate 43 that left two people dead and two others hospitalized early Monday morning. According to the Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office, the victims killed in the crash were 51-year-old Nicole Horne and 56-year-old Jay Horne, a married couple from Oostburg. Their daughter, 22-year-old Alissa Horne, was seriously injured and remains hospitalized. Delta flight from Minneapolis to Wisconsin delayed after pigeons cause chaos in cabin The wrong-way driver was identified as 34-year-old Ace Vue of Milwaukee. Vue also remains hospitalized with serious injuries. The crash occurred shortly before 12:45 a.m. on May 27, when Vue reportedly drove southbound in the northbound lanes of I-43 and collided with the Hornes' SUV. Wisconsin woman arrested for OWI with two young children in vehicle The investigation is ongoing, but authorities say criminal charges are expected to be forwarded to the Ozaukee County District Attorney's Office. Vue could face charges including first-degree reckless homicide and reckless driving causing great bodily harm. Additional charges may follow. No further details have been released at this time. What we know According to the Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office, at about 12:37 a.m., the sheriff's office received several 911 calls regarding a vehicle driving southbound in the northbound lanes on I-43 near Jay Road, north of Belgium. What we know A few minutes later, the wrong-way vehicle collided with a northbound vehicle head-on on I-43, north of County Highway H near Port Washington. The driver was extricated from the vehicle and taken to Aurora Medical Center in Grafton where Flight for Life then transported him to Froedtert Hospital. The driver is in critical condition. The northbound vehicle was a 2017 Ford Escape driven by a 51-year-old female from Oostburg who was pronounced dead on scene. The front-seat passenger, a 56-year-old male from Oostburg, was also pronounced dead on scene. The rear passenger in the vehicle, a 22-year-old female from Oostburg, was extricated and taken via ambulance to Froedtert with serious injuries. Northbound traffic on I-43 was closed at County Highway H for about five hours while the crash was investigated. A wrong way driver collided head-on with another vehicle, killing two and injuring another on I-43 in the Town of Port Washington on Monday, May 26, according to the Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office. A 51-year-old female and a 56-year-old male, both from Oostburg, were pronounced deceased on scene. Their 22-year-old female passenger, also from Oostburg, sustained serious injures. The driver of the offending vehicle, a 34-year-old male from Milwaukee, also sustained serious injures. It is unknown if alcohol or drugs played a factor in the crash, but the investigation is ongoing, per the sheriff's office. At around 12:35 a.m., the Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office received several 911 calls reporting that a 2025 Lexus was driving southbound in the northbound lanes on Interstate 43 near Jay Road in the Town of Belgium. At 12:44 a.m., the wrong way vehicle collided with a a 2017 Ford Escape headed northbound on I-43 north of CTH H in the Town of Port Washington. Two people in the northbound vehicle were killed. Both the 22-year-old female passenger and the wrong way driver were extricated and hospitalized with serious injuries. The 22-year-old was transported by ambulance to Froedtert, and the wrong-way driver was transported to Aurora Medical Center in Grafton where Flight for Life then transported him to Froedtert Hospital. He was the sole passenger in his vehicle; he is currently in critical condition. Northbound traffic on I-43 was closed at County Highway H for approximately 5 hours while the crash was investigated. The Brief 37-year-old Matthew Novak of Fredonia is now in custody at the Ozaukee County Jail after a days-long standoff. A tactical situation started on the night of Thursday, May 8, and lasted nearly 38 hours, ending on Saturday morning, May 10. An initial court appearance for Novak will be scheduled once formal charges are filed by the District Attorney's Office. FREDONIA, Wis. - The man arrested after a days-long standoff in a Fredonia home has been identified. What we know The Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office said 37-year-old Matthew Novak of Fredonia is now in custody at the Ozaukee County Jail. He was previously in custody at a behavioral health facility and was released around 3 p.m. on Thursday, May 22, before being taken into custody at the jail. It lasted nearly 38 hours and ended with the suspect in custody on Saturday morning, May 10. The Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office said a man with weapons had barricaded himself inside a home and was "extremely dangerous." After Novak was taken into custody, the sheriff's office said there wa no longer a threat to the public. According to the Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office, it all started with reports of multiple gunshots on Fox Glen Road. Deputies monitored the area but didn't hear any gunshots. Law enforcement was able to reach the suspect over the phone – who acknowledged he was playing loud music and firing weapons. The suspect then said he was going to keep playing music and would shoot anyone who came to his home. Shortly after that call, deputies heard multiple gunshots coming from the home. Further investigation determined the suspect was firing several guns – including an automatic rifle – in unknown directions, posing a "significant threat" to the community and deputies. The sheriff's office advised neighbors to shelter in place, specifically in the basements of their homes, due to the high-powered nature of the suspect's weapons. SIGN UP TODAY: Get daily headlines, breaking news emails from FOX6 News Negotiators tried to engage the suspect and deescalate the situation for several hours, but the sheriff's office said the suspect remained uncooperative and threatened to "go full auto" and kill anyone who approached. He provided further information that he was heavily armed and would use force against officers. The sheriff's office said the suspect was seen aiming a file toward law enforcement vehicles on multiple occasions. What's next An initial court appearance for Novak will be scheduled once formal charges are filed by the District Attorney's Office.
