Passengers welcome Railways' decision to withdraw move to close Vellarakkad station

Local train passengers have welcomed the Railways' decision to revoke its earlier plan to shut down the Vellarakkad railway station, citing poor revenue. As per the latest announcement, the halt station will continue to operate as usual for local commuters. The decision was reversed following strong protests by residents. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders had also raised the issue with the Union Railway Minister, seeking special consideration. According to communication from railway authorities, four local trains will now be permitted to halt at the station: the Shoranur–Kannur MEMU, Kozhikode–Kannur Passenger, Kannur–Shoranur Passenger, and Kannur–Shoranur MEMU. 'We were shocked by the earlier announcement that the station would be shut from May 30. Many passengers who rely on this service were deeply concerned,' said P. Mini, a commuter from Moodadi. She added that the only hope at the time was the assurance from people's representatives and some political leaders who promised swift intervention. In response to the protests, Koyilandy MLA Kanathil Jameela also took up the matter with the State government and the Railway authorities. She had termed the decision 'unfortunate,' pointing out the inconvenience for locals who would have had to rely on more expensive transport alternatives. Some local passengers said they plan to send postcards to the Railway officials to express their gratitude. They also suggested that with basic improvements and better passenger facilities, the station could begin to generate more revenue in the future.
