HC issues directions for conducting Vaikasi festival at Karur temple

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, as an interim measure, has directed the committee members of Aravayee Amman Temple in Senapadi in Karur district, to take out the temple car procession up to the hamlet border to offer padaiyal to the deity. The court was hearing a public interest litigation petition filed by P. Ramesh of Nerur North in Manmangalam in Karur district. The Aravayee Amman Temple, a private temple, was located in Senapadi, a nearby hamlet. The petitioner said the Vaikasi festival at the temple was scheduled to be held from May 21 to 23. He complained that for the past 15 years, the temple car was not entering the area of the Scheduled Caste people. He sought a direction to the authorities to take steps to resolve the issues between the Scheduled Caste people and those belonging to a dominant intermediate caste and bring the temple car to the area of the Scheduled Caste people. The temple committee members submitted that the petitioner had no right to claim the procession of the temple car. The temple belonged to three hamlets: Senapadi, Mallapalayam and Muniyappanur and they alone had the right to worship. A Division Bench of Justices P. Velmurugan and K.K. Ramakrishnan permitted the committee members to conduct the festival as per scheduled and take the temple car procession up to Senapadi hamlet border to offer padaiyal to the Amman. The procession from Senapadi to Mallapalayam and Muniyappanur was not allowed for the festival. The court directed the authorities to file their report to the court. Since the petitioner made a serious allegation that Scheduled Caste people's right to worship had been deprived, the court had summoned Karur Collector, Inspector General of Police (Central Zone), Superintendent of Police, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Revenue Divisional Officer and the committee members of the temple to be present before the court. The court reserved the matter for passing detailed orders in the case.
