Morrisey: ‘We will not stop fighting to protect girls' sports'

CHARLESTON, (WBOY) — Governor Patrick Morrisey made a Facebook post Saturday in response to a transgender athlete qualifying for the WVSSAC State Track Meet. In his post, Morrisey stated that it was 'wrong and unfair' for a 'boy' to be competing in girls' sports and that he was 'urging officials to keep separate scores so that the true winners can be awarded once we win in court.' PACE Enterprises holds golf tournament fundraiser in Morgantown Morrisey has spoken out against boys competing in girls' sports before and has asked that the case of West Virginia's 'Save Women's Sports Act' be taken to the Supreme Court after it was deemed unconstitutional by the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals last year. The athlete Morrisey is referring to, Becky Pepper-Johnson, or B.P.J., of Bridgeport High School, was assigned male at birth but identifies as transgender and was granted an injunction to compete on the girls team in 2023. Morrisey, who was the West Virginia Attorney General at the time, said the injunction 'harms biologically female athletes, too, who will continue to be displaced as long as biological males join women's sports teams. In that way, the majority's cursory decision undermines equal protection—it doesn't advance it.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Fairmont kicks off 46th annual Three Rivers Festival

FAIRMONT, (WBOY) — The 46th Annual Three Rivers Festival ushered in its second evening of festivities Friday night with the grand opening of its carnival at Palatine Park in Fairmont. Festival-goers enjoyed a variety of carnival rides and indulged in a wide selection of food from numerous vendors, offering treats such as ice-cold lemonade, warm pretzels, cotton candy and candy apples. Live musical performances are also set to take place on the park's stage throughout the event. PACE Enterprises holds golf tournament fundraiser in Morgantown 'That's one of the things I love about it most is bringing the community together. I so often see people talking and I run into people that you have relationships with and you haven't seen them in a while,' a Three Rivers Festival Board Member, Jon Dodds, said. A beloved tradition of the festival is the annual Pepperoni Roll Bake-Off, featuring entries from local businesses across the Mountain State. Dodds told 12 News that he enjoys being able to watch the pageant winners judge the bake-off and how seriously they take their responsibility of keeping the tradition going. 'The weather is starting to break, its the end of the rainy season, and you know families start to come out, bring their kids out, and they start to enjoy the sun, and you know, its just a great time each year,' the Deputy Mayor of the City of Fairmont Josh Rice said. The celebration will conclude on Saturday night with a vibrant fireworks display at 10 p.m. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
