Penang hits RM1.29bil milestone in business events tourism in 2024
GEORGE TOWN: Penang has marked a significant milestone in the business events tourism sector, recording an Estimated Economic Impact (EEI) of RM1.29 billion in 2024 from hosting over 2,000 events attended by more than 300,000 delegates. State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai attributed this achievement to the sustained efforts of the state government through the Penang Convention and Exhibition Bureau (PCEB), which has implemented a series of strategic initiatives to attract high-impact events to the state. "Through active participation in international trade exhibitions such as IMEX Frankfurt, The Meeting Show London, and IBTM Barcelona, as well as the organisation of the Penang Roadshow to India, we have ensured Penang remains relevant and competitive in the global business events industry. "We are also in the process of bidding for a further 27 international events through to 2030," he said during the state legislative assembly sitting today. Wong (DAP – Paya Terubong) was responding to a question from Lee Boon Heng (PKR – Kebun Bunga) regarding the state government's efforts and accomplishments in attracting high-value, high-impact meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE) to Penang. He said that these efforts had been reinforced through the hosting of prestigious events such as the Penang International Travel Exchange (PITE) and BE @ Penang. "These events not only expand our network with international buyers but also strengthen the capabilities of local industry players — including professional conference organisers, travel agencies, and hotel operators," he said. Among the international events successfully secured to take place in Penang are the World Research Travel Conference 2024, the International Advertising Association World Congress 2024, and the International Conference of Butterfly Exhibitors and Suppliers 2024. Wong added that, according to PCEB data, there had been a significant increase in business event activity since the country entered the endemic phase. "In 2023, the EEI reached RM1.03 billion from 604 events involving 162,964 delegates, compared to RM375.91 million in 2022," he said.

RM1.29b and counting: Penang's convention boom draws global interest ahead of new waterfront centre launch
GEORGE TOWN, April 29 — Penang is set to be a premier hub for conventions and exhibitions in Asia Pacific with more international organisations and companies holding events here in recent years. The state hosted a total 2,059 events last year, with over 305,259 delegates that brought in an economic impact of RM1.29 billion. 'Penang is now a place for corporate and association events from various sectors such as finance, manufacturing, technology, marine and agricultural sectors, medical science and pharmaceutical,' Penang Convention and Exhibition Bureau (PCEB) chief executive officer G. Ashwin told Malay Mail in a recent interview. 'Many international exhibitions have voiced interest in holding shows here in Penang for many years but they were not able to come due to lack of space in the existing convention centres,' he said. The number of exhibitions and conferences in Penang have already been increasing post-Covid. 'The economic impact has increased by 24.8 per cent from RM1.033 billion in 2023,' Ashwin said. He expects the number of events in 2025 will also surpass last year and continue to grow next year. He said PCEB is already in discussions for conferences and events to be held in Penang for not just this year but all the way till 2032. 'It is not only about bringing in events, these conferences and exhibitions are also opportunities to showcase Penang as a destination of choice for investors,' he added. He said a even targeted exhibitions, such as those involving the medical industry, could also attract medical devices manufacturers into considering setting up plants or R&D centres in Penang. Ashwin said a Danish company is one of those mulling setting up an R&D centre in Penang, but did not elaborate.

Brise Audio Fugaku, the world's most luxurious earphone system priced at RM79,000, on display at NIAV 2025
GEORGE TOWN, April 25 — The world's first portable audio system with hybrid driver earphones and a full analog amplifier is now on display for sale at the Northern International Audio and Visual Show (NIAV) 2025. The audio system, Brise Audio Fugaku, dubbed as the most luxurious earphone system in the world, with a hefty price tag of RM79,000, is available for demo at the Stars Picker audio library sound cabin at NIAV. There was already a long waiting list to try out the system and despite its hefty price tag, some audiophiles have already voiced interest in placing orders. Over in another sound room by Audio Art Sdn Bhd, an immersive experience featuring the superior audio quality of a RM2 million HiFi system is also on demo. These luxurious audio systems, from the smallest to the most expensive, were among the RM80 million worth of high-end audio and visual products on display and for sale at NIAV, which opens today at the Setia Spice Convention Centre here. This is the third year NIAV is being held in Penang and it is the largest of its kind in the Asia Pacific where 150 brands from 125 countries are on exhibit. 'This is not only an exhibition of the products as there will be live performances including concerts, talks and technical sessions on the AV industry and even a live sound by DJ JazzieJay,' he said. The exhibition not only brings in international brands, some not available in Malaysia before this, but has also drummed up interest among those brands to bring them here. 'Some of the brands are considering opening up store fronts in Penang and one Denmark company is contemplating setting up a research and design centre here,' he said. He said PCEB's goals in bringing in more conferences and exhibitions goes deeper than bringing in international products to be showcased here. 'It can be a launchpad to showcase Penang as an investment destination for brands that have not considered coming here and setting up a plant or a store here,' he said. NIAV 2025 is open to public from now to April 27.
