What the PFF Numbers Say About the Titans Defense

What the PFF Numbers Say About the Titans Defense originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Numbers don't always mean everything. However, as of this offseason and before training camp begins, we have only numbers to go by outside of watching minicamps and OTAs, where players are in shorts and helmets. With that being said, the Pro Football Focus numbers are out for all teams except for the rookies on their team, and for the Titans, it tells a little bit of a story, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Advertisement The strength of the Titans, according to the numbers, is the interior of the defensive line. Interior defensive linemen Jeffrey Simmons (80.00) and T'Vondre Sweat (76.1) lead the charge there in their rankings. The Titans will need Sweat and Simmons to play to the best of their ability, and if they do, that means they stuff the run and help make teams one-dimensional. However, that is where the issue lies with the Titans, according to the PFF numbers. Tennessee Titans cornerback L'Jarius Sneed (38).Andrew Nelles / The Tennessean / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images The corners who are listed as starters, Jarvis Brownlee Jr and L'Jarius Sneed, both have a PFF score of 59.4 and 36.3. Those aren't numbers that instill confidence when you look at them at face value. Roger McCreary, the slot corner for the Titans, rates at 61.3, and backup cornerback Darrell Baker Jr ranks at 65.5, the highest among Titans cornerbacks. While these numbers tell a story, the good thing is that these numbers are just predictions. They could change at the drop of a hat with solid play. Plus, the numbers don't mean anything if players make plays, and this Titans defense is effective in keeping the other team out of the end zone. Either way, we will see during this season if the numbers are correct or if they didn't tell the entire story of what precisely this Titans defense is at its core.
