Whistling Straits seeks Ryder Cup return: 'We certainly would love to see that back'

Whistling Straits seeks Ryder Cup return: 'We certainly would love to see that back' Whistling Straits is hosting the PGA Works Collegiate Championship this week for the first time, but the Wisconsin resort has grander ambitions. Kohler Co., whose company owns Whistling Straits, already has hosted three PGA Championships in 2004, 2010 and '15. But the move of that event from August to May beginning in 2019, may make conditions less suitable for a return. 'That's less optimal, given our growing season here and where we are from a timing standpoint,' Kohler chairman and CEO David Kohler told Front Office Sports. But the Ryder Cup, which was played at Whistling Straits the last time the biennial competition was hosted on U.S. soil, in 2021, would be right up Kohler's alley. 'I think definitely the Ryder Cup in the future,' Kohler told Front Office Sports. 'We think we deserve, and have proved the right, to be considered for that again. The 2021 event at Whistling Straits will go down as one of the greatest Ryder Cups in history—the venue, the drama, the U.S. win. I think we earned the right to be considered in the future; we certainly would love to see that back.' The first open Ryder Cup date available is 2041, while the PGA Championship has an opening in 2032. Whistling Straits will host the 2028 U.S. Amateur Championship, in addition to other future USGA events. 'We're in conversations with the PGA of America and USGA, as well as other organizations, regarding unique events that we might create. We have great championship venues, including Blackwolf Run, which hosted two U.S. Women's Opens in 2012 and 1998. They were purpose — built for majors and significant events — things like not having any housing anywhere on the course, the infrastructure that's been built around them, and the reputation for delivering great championships in a state that turns up. We have a lot of assets at our disposal, and hospitality resources we've built here in Kohler that can provide leading-edge accommodations. We have all the elements to host, so we want to continue to be selective and do special events.' Expect there to be plenty of competition for a future Ryder Cup but don't put it past Kohler to pull out all the stops to ensure a Ryder Cup return in the not-too distant future.

Whistling Straits will host a unique college golf event. Let this aviation major explain

Whistling Straits will host a unique college golf event. Let this aviation major explain Show Caption Hide Caption Preparations for Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits golf course in Haven Preparations are underway for next week's Ryder Cup golf tournament at Whistling Straits in Haven near Sheboygan. Mike De Sisti, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel EKU golfer Dili Sitanonth will compete in the PGA Works Collegiate Championship at Whistling Straits. The PGA Works Collegiate Championship provides opportunities for minority golfers from various colleges. Sitanonth aims to pursue both a professional golf career and a career in aviation. Eastern Kentucky University golfer Dili Sitanonth isn't afraid to chase new horizons. She has lived around the world while going after her dream of becoming a pro. Sitanonth is also an aviation major who is just starting to take off on solo flights. The senior golfer will set her sights on Whistling Straits in Kohler from May 5-7 as she competes in the PGA Works Collegiate Championship. The world-renowned links course has hosted many big tournaments, notably the 2021 Ryder Cup, three PGA Championships and the 2007 U.S. Senior Open. Several other tournaments are on the way: the 2028 U.S. Amateur, the 2033 U.S. Junior Amateur and the 2037 U.S. Girls' Junior. But the PGA Works has a different kind of impact. It was created in 1986 for athletes from Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic-serving schools and other institutions that provide opportunities for minorities. Last year at TPC Sawgrass in Florida, 184 golfers and student-athletes from 65 schools competed across five divisions in the 54-hole, stroke-play event. It is open to all minority men and women golfers at any collegiate level. Sitanonth first played in the event when she was on the team at Texas Southern, an HBCU. Then last year, after transferring to Eastern Kentucky because of their top-notch aviation program, she finished second as an individual. The event gave her confidence that she could compete at a high level. 'First of all, with the course setting, it's very professional,' Sitanonth said. 'The camera crews and everything kind of give me a little taste of what it is going to be like when I move on to like a bigger tour. 'The field is very competitive. So I would say it's prepared me for everything.' Sitanonth has shown that she will go after her goals when given the opportunity. She was born in Thailand and doesn't have a typical golf background. 'I started to play golf when I was like 3 ½,' Sitanonth said. 'But it was just an extracurricular for me. Like an activity after school during that time. 'Didn't play competitively until 12, 13, which is a little late, I would say. And then two, three years later it was time for me to make a decision about my high school.' Sitanonth's parents let her research schools, and she found the Loretto School in Scotland, which gave her a golf scholarship. She came to the United States to become a pro. 'She's one of the harder workers we've had here at EKU,' Colonels coach Mandy Moore said. 'She's just really passionate and devoted about what she does. 'She has a goal and a dream of what she wants and she really works hard with her coaches back home and the way she goes about things here to just keep working toward that.' Sitanonth's fearlessness extends to getting behind the controls of a plane. 'My plan is to do both golf and aviation,' she said. 'I'm not graduating this semester, because I have to fly still. So hopefully I can still fly while I try to get my Tour card.' Give her an opportunity and the sky is the limit.

FAMU holds off UAPB for SWAC Golf Championship

The Florida A&M Golf team, the reigning HBCU national champions, won the school's first-ever SWAC Championship by holding off Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the final round of the 2025 SWAC Golf Tournament. In the end FAMU would win by six strokes, this after holding a 14-stroke lead going in to the first round. It was not a matter of the Rattlers backing up to the Golden Lions, but rather a charge of epic proportions by UAPB. The best two rounds of the first two days of the tournament were all held by the Rattlers. With two rounds of 6-over-par, the Rattlers entered the final round at 12-over-par. UAPB has two rounds for the tournament not representative of their play in the tournament over the last two years. The Golden Lions opened the tournament with a round og 11-over-par. They would follow that up with a round of 11-over-par. Going into the final round, UAPB was sitting at 26-over-par, while the Rattlers were 14 strokes ahead, sitting at 12-over-par. FAMU would actually shoot their best round of the tournament on the final day with an aggregate score of 4-over-par. The Rattlers would conclude the day at 16-over-par. UAPB would come as close as teo strokes in the final round as they assaulted the front nine. The final four holes would be the final judge of the course as the 18th hole, par-5, would swallow up scorecards, leaving room for the Rattlers to take home the 2025 SWAC crown. With the victory, FAMU becomes the first Division-I school to win both a MEAC and SWAC golf championship. Head coach Mike Rice coached the Rattlers in both championships. He is a graduate of Florida A&M and led the Rattlers to the national championship as a player and medalist while playing for the Rattlers. The Rattlers will head to Kohler, WI at the iconic Whistling Straits Golf Club to defend their PGA Works HBCU National Championship title. Last year they won the title in Jacksonville at the TPC Sawgrass on the stadium course. The PGA Works Collegiate Championship is scheduled for May 5-7.
