GRS is not an ordinary coalition: Lumadan Chief

Published on: Wednesday, May 14, 2025 Published on: Wed, May 14, 2025 By: Iskandar Dzulkifli Text Size: Mazlan said GRS should contest more than half of the 73 State Legislative Assembly seats if such cooperation materialises. BEAUFORT: The Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) is a major political coalition in Sabah that should not be underestimated, as it represents the voices of the people from diverse backgrounds and areas. Lumadan Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah Division Chief, Mazlan Joehari Manan, said GRS, as a 'large vessel', is the threshold of political stability and aspirations of Sabahans who seek sustainable development and greater autonomy. 'GRS is a leading political coalition in this region that should not be dismissed by any party because we comprehensively represent the pulse of Sabah's people. 'GRS is not just an ordinary coalition, it is a mature union and a manifestation of Sabahans' voices demanding progress, stability and justice. 'We are not a minor voice... we are the mainstream voice. This coalition is a 'large vessel' carrying the hopes and future of this region. 'Most importantly, GRS holds autonomous power as a major local coalition compared to others,' he said in a statement here, last Sunday. He said this in reaction to GRS Chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Haji Noor's statement affirming GRS' readiness to contest solo in the 17th State election following the decision of Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN) to cooperate in the election. However, Sabah Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Chief Datuk Mustapha Sakmud recently indicated that there is still room for discussion on potential cooperation between GRS and the PH-BN coalition. When asked about the possibility of GRS collaborating with PH-BN following Mustapha's statement, Mazlan said anything is possible but stressed that as Sabah's leading coalition, GRS must remain dominant. Mazlan, who is also Special Officer to the Chief Minister, said GRS should contest more than half of the 73 State Legislative Assembly seats if such cooperation materialises. 'Whatever form the political cooperation takes, GRS must dominate seat allocation in the upcoming election and dominate in fighting for the people's rights through the Sabah state government. 'Personally, I believe GRS should contest at least 50 out of the 73 State seats if it intends to cooperate. But if no negotiations take place, we are prepared to go solo in the state election,' he said. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? BN to refine proposal for Sabah grand coalition with PH, GRS

KEPALA BATAS: Barisan Nasional (BN) will refine a proposal to form a grand coalition with Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) to face the next Sabah state election, said BN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. Ahmad Zahid, who is also Umno president, said this includes addressing any points of difference between the three coalitions. 'It is primarily to ensure that the seats we contest do not overlap with one another,' he told reporters after officiating at the declaration ceremony of Maktab Rendah Sains MARA (MRSM) Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi here today. Yesterday, in Tawau, Sabah, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is also PH chairman, said that cooperation between PH, BN and GRS in the Sabah election is crucial to guarantee political stability at both the national and state levels. So far, according to Anwar, discussions among Sabah PH, Sabah BN and GRS are still ongoing and have yet to be finalised, while the previous statement on Sabah PH-BN cooperation for the state polls only involves the two coalitions and does not yet include GRS. Last Saturday, Unity Government Secretariat chief Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki and PH secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said in a joint statement that PH and BN had agreed to work together in facing the next Sabah election.

SAPP, Star: Going solo worth considering

Published on: Monday, May 12, 2025 Published on: Mon, May 12, 2025 By: Hayati Dzulkifli Text Size: Yong and Jeffrey. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) feels 'vindicated' with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) Chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Haji Noor's indication that the coalition may contest solo in the 17th State election, if the plan by Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional to limit cooperation to themselves is final. Its President Datuk Seri Yong Teck Lee said SAPP has been consistently advocating for GRS to contest all 73 Sabah state seats without including peninsula-based parties for two years and to focus on cooperation with other local parties. 'SAPP has been talking about this (GRS contesting 73 State seats) for two years already. As a consequence of speaking up, SAPP had been bombarded left, right and centre from near and far. Supporting only Sabah parties is clearly the trend,' said the former Chief Minister. On Thursday, GRS Chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Haji Noor said it adheres to the principle that Sabah should be governed by local parties, while not disregarding the role and importance of national parties within a broader political cooperation framework. 'If the final decision of PH and BN is to work together in the coming State Election, then GRS is prepared to contest solo and focus on collaboration with other like-minded local parties. 'What GRS is fighting for is political stability and wellbeing of the people for the future of Sabah,' Hajiji had said. He also dismissed that the PH-BN alliance was a wake-up call for GRS. 'This PH-BN alliance is not a wake-up call. The wake-up calls were made by SAPP, Star Sabah President Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey [Kitingan], and Usno President Tan Sri Pandikar Amin. But nobody in GRS listened. Now, it is not a wake-up call. It is the fire alarm,' Yong said. Meanwhile, Dr Jeffrey said Hajiji's statement on GRS having to contest solo if the PH-BN arrangement is final was a very welcome and timely statement. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? GRS-PH-BN cooperation still possible, says Sabah PKR chief

Published on: Saturday, May 10, 2025 Published on: Sat, May 10, 2025 By: Crystal Hermenegildus Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: Cooperation between Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) and the Pakatan Harapan-Barisan Nasional (PH-BN) coalition for the upcoming state election remains possible, with both sides open to talks. Sabah PKR chief Datuk Mustapha Sakmud ( pic ) said the formalisation of the PH-BN pact is welcomed but stressed the importance of giving local parties room to lead. He acknowledged GRS's desire to head the state government and said PH respects this aspiration. Mustapha also assured that Sabah PH has been included in all decisions made at the federal level and stressed avoiding any split in votes. He noted that a discussion opportunity between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and GRS chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor will arise during an event in Tawau on May 11. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
