Doctors learn to open blocked heart arteries without surgery
Lucknow: Doctors learned to open completely blocked heart arteries without surgery at the 11th Indo-Japanese CTO Club (IJCTO) Summit, which was held in the city on Friday. The event was inaugurated by chief guest deputy chief minister Brijesh Pathak and brought together heart specialists from India, Japan and Europe. They demonstrated 12 live cases to explain these new methods. The event organiser, Dr PK Goel said, "About one in five heart patients have fully blocked arteries, which usually require bypass surgery. But now, new advanced techniques using special 3D imaging and tiny tools inside the artery can open these blockages without needing to open the chest. This means treatment is faster, safer and less risky." He mentioned that these new methods will soon become a must-have skill for heart doctors. Dr N Pratap Kumar called this treatment the "final frontier" for heart disease, helping many patients avoid surgery. Young doctors at the summit learned directly from experts, gaining hands-on experience with these new techniques. The success rate for these difficult cases is over 90%.

City to host meet on new tech to open heart arteries
Lucknow: As heart disease increases due to changing lifestyles and dietary habits, many patients are advised to undergo bypass surgery, though it can often be avoided with newer medical techniques. This was stated by Dr PK Goel, organising secretary and course director, Chronic Total Occlusion (CTO), during a briefing ahead of the Indo-Japanese CTO Club's annual meeting, scheduled to be held at a city hotel in Lucknow from May 30 to June 1. The conference will focus on advanced methods to open completely blocked coronary arteries using angioplasty, eliminating the need for bypass surgery in many cases. More than 600 doctors have registered for the conference, which sees annual attendance of 600–700 participants from India, Japan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Canada and other countries to discuss clinical cases and share methods used in CTO intervention — a procedure that uses angioplasty to restore blood flow in blocked arteries. "CTO intervention can help avoid bypass surgery in many cases. Training more doctors in this method can lead to better outcomes. The aim is to prepare more doctors to manage difficult cases; this can reduce the need for major surgery and help more patients," Dr Goel said.
