I'll (Maybe) Be Back – Dr Mahathir Not Ruling Out Return As PM

Subscribe to our FREE Former two-time prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad attended a book launch featuring the Perdana Leadership Foundation (PLF)'s latest publication, A Conversation with Tun Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad: A Legacy of Leadership and Vision, on 19 May at the Foundation in Putrajaya. The launch included a special dialogue with Mahathir discussing the theme 'Challenges of Economic Development in the 21 st Century.' Mahathir, who will turn 100 on 10 July, unsurprisingly made an interesting comment during the dialogue. He was asked what will be the first thing he implements if he becomes the prime minister again. Without missing a beat, Mahathir said he would abolish the punishments on those who speak of 3R (race, religion, and royalty). He explained that he must know what the people is thinking about, citing that keeping people's mouths closed is not a good idea for leadership. He said he needs to be able to respond to people's feelings and problems and failing to do so, he'll fail to build a developed country. We need freedom of speech. We need freedom to do business on our own. We need a good cooperation between the government and the private sector. We need to develop this factory and make things easy. Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad Mahathir added that he feels there's too much corruption, adding that the wealth of the country cannot be exploited due to corruption any more. Netizens were amused by Mahathir's comments regarding 3R due to his known stance regarding Malay supremacy and his previous comments that could divide races. Some shared they didn't want Mahathir to be prime minister again and wondered how many times he wants to lead the country. To refresh everyone's memory: Mahathir suddenly ''rage quit'' aka While Mahathir has his own lifetime fans, many agreed that he should remain permanently retired. "50% Off Wednesdays" is designed to make moviegoing more affordable than ever. Beginning July 9, AMC Stubs members will enjoy a price reduction of 50% off the adult-evening base ticket price all day long, on Wednesdays at all AMC locations in the United States. This new program is in addition to AMC continuing to offer significant discounts for AMC Stubs members on Tuesdays. While certain movies and holiday time periods may be excluded from the "50% Off Wednesdays" program, it is envisioned that if successful, this new AMC pricing initiative will be almost universally available at all AMC Theatres in the United States going forward. AMC Chairman and CEO Adam Aron commented: "At AMC, we've gone to great lengths to create the preeminent moviegoing environment at our AMC theatres including our offering more comfortable seating, more premium formats, and better food and beverage offerings. Now, we also are pleased to make moviegoing more affordable, with our new '50% Off Wednesdays' effort. Realistically, we could not afford to have made this change to our ticket pricing strategy until the box office showed true signs of sustained recovery. But in April and now in May, the box office has been booming, and the remainder of 2025 appears poised to continue that upward box office trend." Aron continued, "The introduction of Discount Tuesdays several years ago has turned Tuesday into one of the best attended days of the week, in part because there is a segment of the moviegoing audience who looks first for a great value in their moviegoing. With the introduction by AMC of 50% off Wednesdays, we're looking to turn Wednesday into a similarly strong-attendance day for moviegoers at our theatres." Guests who are not currently AMC Stubs members can sign up to be AMC Stubs Insider members for free through the AMC mobile app, website, or at their local theatre. AMC Stubs membership allows for the earning of points redeemable for discounts at AMC theatres, and offers additional perks year-round, including half-price tickets on Wednesdays, free birthday rewards, and access to exclusive offers and promotions. Premium Formats Power AMC Theatres® to Its Biggest Weekend so Far in 2025 and Second Biggest April Weekend Since 2019 – in the United States and Globally

AMC Theatres in the U.S. and ODEON Cinemas internationally recorded their best Thursday-through-Sunday weekend in 2025 and second-best weekend in April since 2019 - based on attendance, admissions revenue, and overall revenue At U.S. locations, 33% of AMC's attendance was generated by its Premium Large Format (PLF) screens and RealD 3D screens on Saturday, April 5 AMC has recently announced further investments in its PLF strategy, which will bring popular PLF offerings to even more theatres over the next few years The performance of A MINECRAFT MOVIE reinforces AMC's belief that after a slow start to 2025, the box office is expected to be much stronger throughout the remainder of the year LEAWOOD, Kan., April 07, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--AMC Theatres (NYSE:AMC), the largest theatrical exhibitor in the United States and in the world, today announced that its premium experiences, and the strong performance of A MINECRAFT MOVIE, helped give AMC in the U.S. and ODEON Cinemas internationally their most successful weekend so far in 2025 and second-biggest April weekend, Thursday through Sunday, since April 2019. Those benchmarks include attendance; admissions revenue; and overall revenue, including food and beverage. A MINECRAFT MOVIE's performance, which finished well ahead of public industry predictions, helps reinforce AMC's belief that the box office will be stronger going forward than it was in the first quarter of the year. The movie's attendance in AMC's premium large format (PLF) and RealD 3D auditoriums is powerful evidence that there is meaningful opportunity to grow AMC revenues by expanding the availability of PLF screens for its guests. AMC's PLF experiences in the U.S. include IMAX at AMC, Dolby Cinema at AMC, and PRIME at AMC. Among those PLF experiences, combined with the performance of its premium RealD 3D showtimes, AMC recorded 33% of its attendance in premium auditoriums on Saturday, April 5. In the fall of 2024, AMC announced the AMC Go Plan. This investment initiative is designed to enhance the AMC moviegoing experience through seating upgrades, theatre renovations, and by expanding PLF offerings to AMC moviegoers. In the last two weeks, AMC announced it will expand its premium presence over the next few years, adding more PLF locations with its major providers, and new unique, premium experiences. AMC Chairman and CEO Adam Aron commented:"This weekend's impressive box office result makes two things very clear. First, as we've been saying for many months, after an expected slow start to the box office in 2025, the rest of the year looks to be much stronger. We expect to see one movie title after another in rapid succession bringing moviegoers into our theatres in droves. And second, the over-indexing of attendance in the PLF auditoriums of our theatres demonstrates that our guests have a keen preference for premium experiences. This is further confirmation that there is significant opportunity for AMC to grow revenues and enhance guest satisfaction by our investing in the expansion of PLF offerings at AMC Theatres and ODEON Cinemas." Aron further commented:"We thank and congratulate A MINECRAFT MOVIE's filmmakers, and our good friends and partners at Warner Bros. Pictures. This was a film made and marketed to appeal to a massive moviegoing audience. We look forward to the movie's continued success in our theatres over the next several weeks, and to welcoming more exciting and guest-pleasing titles in the weeks and months to come." Libraries urge Ohio to preserve dedicated funding

Ohio libraries are banding together in hopes of maintaining dedicated state funding House Republicans propose to eliminate. Why it matters: Libraries stand to lose $100 million in funding over the next two years, a figure the Ohio Library Council says"could jeopardize the vital services that our communities rely on." State of play: The state's Public Library Fund (PLF), established in 1985, originally directed a share of state income tax to fund local libraries. Starting in 2008, Ohio set a new funding baseline at 2.22% of the state's total general tax revenue. That share has declined since, dropping to 1.7% in the current 2024-25 budget. Zoom in: PLF makes up about 17% of the Columbus Metropolitan Library's budget, per Kristin Sutton, the system's government relations manager. Smaller libraries rely more heavily on this funding, Sutton tells us. Between the lines: The fund provided $483 million to libraries last year, nearly the same as in 2000 ($484 million), with no adjustment for inflation. Driving the news: Gov. Mike DeWine proposes upping that figure to 1.75%, while House Republicans want to eliminate the dedicated funding. Their budget plan would make library funding a line item appropriation. The new allocation would be $980 million over the next two years, according to the Library Council, or $100 million less than the $1.08 billion expected under DeWine's plan. Threat level: Sutton says the funding cuts would be "significant," but worries even more about the "short-sighted" option of eliminating the PLF. Instead of an "ongoing and reliable source of funding," Sutton tells Axios libraries would have to lobby the state for money each budget cycle — adding administrative burden and uncertainty and potentially putting a de facto cap on funding. "That $485 million is insufficient to meet the needs of today's library. Ten years from now, how will we ever see growth in that number?" Zoom out: Possible state cuts come as federal library funding is under threat. President Trump signed a March 14 executive order seeking to dismantle the Institute of Museum and Library Services, which distributes millions of dollars annually to the State Library of Ohio. What's next: Led by the Library Council, libraries from across the state have posted pleas for their supporters to contact state lawmakers and ask to restore the PLF.

AMC bets on premium screens as Hollywood slate boasts big blockbuster titles

Hollywood's blockbuster slate is heating up, and AMC Entertainment is increasing the number of its premium screens to meet demand. The world's largest cinema chain is adding 40 Dolby Cinema theaters to its U.S.-based AMC locations through the end of 2027. It marks a 25% increase in the number of the branded premium screens, bringing the company's total number to more than 200. 'Premium moviegoing is defining the modern box office,' said Kevin Yeaman, president and CEO of Dolby Laboratories. 'In expanding our longstanding partnership with AMC, we look forward to providing even more audiences with access to the most immersive film experiences that you can only get at Dolby Cinema.' The announcement comes just days after AMC revealed a partnership with CJ 4DPLEX to add 65 Screen X auditoriums and 40 4DX theaters to its theaters around the globe. Premium large format screens, often referred to as PLFs, are elevated viewing experiences that come with a higher ticket price. The physical screens are often bigger than traditional movie screens or have auditoriums that feature higher-quality sound systems or seating options. Dolby Cinemas are specially designed auditoriums with plush, reclining seats and a combination of Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, which deliver crisp visuals and immersive sound. Screen X theaters feature a 270-degree panoramic screen that extends the movie image onto the side walls using multi-projection technology, and 4DX is a premium experience that features gyroscopic seats and practical effects like fog, water and wind that play in time with the movie. The films that benefit the most from PLF ticket sales have been Hollywood's biggest blockbusters, as audiences want to see explosive action movies and dazzling spectacles in the most state-of-the-art locations. It's why films like Universal's 'Oppenheimer,' Disney's 'Avatar: The Way of Water' and Warner Bros.′ 'Dune' and 'Dune: Part Two' captured a significant portion of the PLF box office during their runs. The 2025 and 2026 box offices are packed with blockbuster features from major franchises like Avatar, Star Wars, Jurassic Park, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, DC comics and Mission Impossible. 'The expansion of this partnership is a powerful demonstration of AMC's ongoing commitment to deliver this premium experience — sought out by filmmakers, studio partners, and our guests — to even more of our theaters and AMC moviegoers around the United States,' Adam Aron, AMC's CEO, said in a statement Monday about the Dolby expansion. As of 2024, there were more than 950 theaters in North America that had PLF screens, a 33.7% jump from just five years ago, according to data from Comscore. These screens accounted for 9.1% of the domestic box office, around $600 million in 2024. Premium ticket prices average just under $17 apiece, according to movie data firm EntTelligence, an 8% increase since 2021, when the company first started reporting these figures. PLF receipts still represent a small portion of the overall box office, with most audiences seeing films on traditional digital screens. However, the PLF box office has grown 33% in just five years.
