Youth embrace new PLKN era

KUALA LUMPUR: As the revamped National Service Training Programme 3.0 Series 2/2025 begins, selected trainees look forward to personal growth, friendship and new experiences. Even parents of the trainees are also happy that their children will learn new skills and make new friends. For Siti Maimunah Amir, 55, watching her youngest daughter, Nur Anis Azrina Razali, 18, enter the 515 Territorial Army Regiment Camp here for the programme, which began yesterday, was an emotional but proud moment. 'This is the first time she's ever been away from home in Kelantan,' said Siti Maimunah, who was accompanied by another daughter, Nur Fadlin Razali, 36. 'She's never even stayed in a hostel before. I am worried but I believe this experience will help her grow.' The mother of six shared that Nur Anis was the only one among her children selected for the revamped PLKN 3.0. 'When I found out she was chosen, my heart raced. I was nervous and anxious ... but also proud. I didn't cry when we said goodbye ... but maybe I will later,' she smiled. 'She's never been apart from me. I just hope she settles in quickly and makes friends here.' Her parting advice to her daughter was simple but heartfelt: 'Be kind, listen to your trainers and take care of yourself.' Knowing that trainees won't have regular contact with their families, she packed some of Nur Anis' favourite snacks. 'I know she'll be provided with meals, but it's just something from home – just in case she gets hungry or starts missing us,' she added. Journey's start: Female trainees preparing for registration at the 515th Regiment Territorial Army Camp in Kuala Lumpur. — Bernama When Evelyn Ng Min Min, 18, found out she was selected for the programme through the PLKN official website, she described the moment as a mix of surprise and nerves. 'I was the only one among my classmates who got selected. I'm worried about being here alone without knowing anyone. 'But the idea of getting to handle firearms during training gives me some motivation,' grinned Ng, who is from Muar, Johor. She was accompanied by her mother, Lim Chiw Shi, 38, and her three younger sisters. She said her sisters cried several times as they travelled to Kuala Lumpur. 'They've never been apart from me and so they are worried. 'I hope to meet new people and make friends. Besides getting fitter, I want to gain unexpected experiences – whether it's knowledge or friendship,' she said. For Priyanka Anbalagan, 18, from Melaka, the notification that she was selected came with a fair share of anxiety. 'I've never had an experience like this before, so not knowing anyone or what to expect made me feel uneasy,' she said. Despite missing her parents, she looks forward to the 45-day training. 'I hope I'll learn something new and have the confidence to see it through,' she said. Wan Nursukainah Mahdi, 18, from Johor, was excited about being selected for the programme. Her excitement was spurred by her brother, who attended PLKN in Mersing 10 years ago, and still talks fondly about the experience. 'He told me he didn't want the training to end! That got me looking forward to it. 'Even though I look small, I'm quite capable when it comes to physical activities. I'm confident I can complete the programme and I hope to make new friends along the way,' she added. A total of 344 youths – 206 male and 138 female trainees – reported for the PLKN 3.0 Series 2/2025 yesterday. Male trainees are placed at the 505 Territorial Army Camp in Pekan, Pahang, while females are based at the 515 Territorial Army Camp in Kuala Lumpur. Despite being in separate camps, they will follow the same training modules comprising 30% nation-building and 70% basic military training, said National Service Training Department director-general Datuk Ya'cob Samiran. He said the revised programme provides military-style uniforms and a gender-separated structure. He assured the public that the revamped programme is safe and focused on character-building, confidence and civic responsibility. He said late registrations are allowed until May 16, adding that 30 volunteers have joined the programme so far. PLKN 3.0 kicked off on Jan 12 after a seven-year suspension. A total of 142 volunteer trainees, aged 18 to 25, including 44 females, participated. The third series will be held from Sept 7 to Oct 21.

Trainees excited to begin PLKN 3.0 training session

KUALA LUMPUR: A sense of excitement and nervousness filled the air during the registration for the National Service Training Programme (PLKN) Series 2/2025 at the 515 Territorial Army Regiment Camp this morning. One of the trainees, Nur Adila Syafinas Mohd Shafirdaus, 18, volunteered to join the programme after finding out she was not selected during a check on the National Service Training Department's website. A fan of extreme activities interested in the military, the Kepong-born girl said she was thrilled to spend the next 45 days at the camp. 'When I found out I wasn't selected, I immediately filled out the voluntary training form on the website, and once accepted, my parents didn't object because they know I love extreme activities,' she told reporters after completing registration at the camp. For Ivyanna Errica Peter, an 18-year-old trainee from Sabah, PLKN is an opportunity to equip herself with knowledge and life skills to become a more mature and well-rounded individual. Meanwhile, V. Manissa, 18, from Negeri Sembilan, said her initial worries about the programme quickly faded when she arrived at the camp, thanks to the warm and friendly welcome from other trainees. 'I was initially scared and anxious, especially since I didn't know anyone here. But I hope to make many friends,' she said. A total of 550 trainees were selected for PLKN Series 2/2025, comprising 200 female trainees stationed at the 515th Territorial Army Regiment Camp here, and 350 male trainees at the 505th Territorial Army Regiment Camp in Pekan, Pahang. Seventy-three male and 43 female trainees aged between 18 and 25, completed the first series of the PLKN 3.0 training held from Jan 12 to Feb 25 at the 515th Territorial Army Regiment Camp here. Reinstated after a seven-year hiatus, the phased programme aims to cultivate patriotism, national unity, and a strong identity among Malaysian youths, while equipping them with physical and mental resilience to face life's challenges. Meanwhile, twin brothers Ieahiea Hafiz and Ieuseuf Hafiz, 19, who registered at the 505th Territorial Army Regiment Camp in Pekan, Pahang, expressed their excitement to join PLKN as they are interested in self-development training for mental and physical resilience. Ieahiea, who is keen on military activities, said they registered for the training voluntarily after learning that it had been revived. Fong Bin Yu, 18, said he would fully use the training for his personal development, and take the opportunity to get to know other cultures more closely and strengthen unity. S. Thilagan Raj, 18, said encouragement from his parents and the need to develop stronger self-discipline motivated him to join the programme. A total of 206 male trainees have registered to join PLKN 3.0 Series 2/2025 at the 505th Territorial Army Regiment Camp in Pekan, Pahang. Registration at the camp is open until noon, May 16.

National Service 3.0: All trainees to undergo same training modules regardless of gender, says D-G

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 344 trainees have reported for the National Service Training Programme (PLKN) 3.0 Series 2/2025, which began on Sunday (May 11). Although placed in two separate camps based on gender, all trainees will undergo the same training modules. National Service Training Department (JLKN) director-general Datuk Ya'cob Samiran said male trainees are based at the 505 Territorial Army Regiment Camp in Pekan, Pahang, while female trainees are stationed at the 515 Territorial Army Regiment Camp in Kuala Lumpur. 'There is no difference in the training content. Any variation will be based on the physical capabilities and health of individual trainees. 'Physical training will be conducted in stages, with increasing levels of difficulty,' he said during a media briefing after observing the registration of female trainees at the 515 Territorial Army Camp today. He added that the core structure of the training modules has been retained, with several enhancements introduced compared to PLKN 3.0 Series 1/2025. Among the improvements is the separation of trainees by gender into two dedicated camps, while maintaining the same training framework—30% nation-building and 70% basic military training. He also noted that trainees who have yet to report still have until noon on May 16 to do so. 'Those who fail to report by the deadline may be referred to the Legal Division under Section 18(1) of the National Service Training Act 2003 (Act 628),' he added. The registration process is expected to take two to three days, as many trainees have requested late registration due to camp location or personal readiness. He said the new structure also mandates military-style uniforms, and the training period has been reduced from three months to 45 days. "University-bound students will complete their training at their institutions, but passing the course remains a compulsory national service requirement. "Parents and the public are assured that the revamped PLKN 3.0 offers a safe, meaningful experience, free from issues such as bullying," he added. The programme aims to build character, instil confidence, and foster civic responsibility among youth. Ya'cob also confirmed that JLKN is open to accepting voluntary participants, subject to available slots, adding that 30 volunteers have already registered. Following a seven-year suspension, the current intake includes 206 male and 138 female trainees aged between 18 and 25.
