With savings depleted, desperate Bintulu mum seeks donations for son's second liver transplant in China
Gonzalez and his parents have been based at PPUM in Kuala Lumpur since March. BINTULU (May 22): A Bintulu mother is urgently appealing for donations to help finance a second liver transplant for her young son Gonzalez Yiu, who suffers from Type II autoimmune hepatitis and end-stage liver disease. Gonzalez, who has been battling the condition since he was six months old, is now one year and eight months. His mother Viviana Thomas said the estimated cost of the transplant and treatment at Renji Hospital in Shanghai, China is RM225,000. 'We've exhausted all our savings on essential supplies, medical treatment, and traveling back and forth to the hospital. 'This is our last hope. We want to keep fighting for our son's life,' she said when contacted by Utusan Borneo. Gonzalez, the youngest of two children, underwent his first liver transplant in March last year. Viviana was the donor, but complications soon followed and the toddler's liver has begun to deteriorate. For the second transplant, Gonzalez's father Yiu Kuok Ling will donate part of his liver. 'My only wish is to see my son healthy and living a normal life like other children,' said Viviana, adding that they have been based at University Malaya Medical Centre (PPUM) in Kuala Lumpur since March for ongoing monitoring. In a recent Facebook post, Biliary Atresia Malaysia Association (Bama) confirmed that, in collaboration with PPUM, they have partnered with the Nanyang Press Foundation to support the family's medical mission. 'All required documentation with the hospital in China has been finalised, and the process is expected to take about a month. 'We hope young Gonzalez can be flown to China as soon as possible, with the help of public and organisational support,' said the post. Those wishing to contribute to Gonzalez's medical fund can donate to Yayasan Nanyang Press (OCBC Bank: 701-120679-6) using the reference Gonzalez Yiu. YAKEB, PPUM To Discuss Effective Treatment For Walking Legend Saravanan
KUALA LUMPUR, April 22 (Bernama) -- The National Athletes Welfare Foundation (Yakeb) will hold a meeting with the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (PPUM) to facilitate an effective line of treatment for former race walking champion G. Saravanan, who is suffering from a debilitating muscle disease. Yakeb chairman Datuk Ahmad Shapawi Ismail said that for now, the 55-year-old, who is stricken with motor neurone disease (MND) - a rare disease that causes muscle neurodegenerative disorder and has no known cure - has returned to his hometown in Penang. "The disease that Saravanan has is a fairly critical disease that is difficult to explain in terms of treatment, which is why he has undergone further treatment in India to receive alternative treatment. We have discussed with Yakeb Board of Trustees member Dr Ahmad Munawar Helmi Salim. bootstrap slideshow "Our meeting with PPUM is to get a real picture of what else can be done to facilitate medical treatment for Saravanan and he will remain at PPUM until his health improves," he said at a Yakeb press conference here today. Ahmad Shapawi said the assistance scheme that will be given to Saravanan is based on the foundation's capacity, in addition to the athlete also receiving a subsistence allowance for six months starting this month. On Friday (April 18), Saravanan received a contribution of RM10,000 from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, while Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Adam Adli Abd Halim and the Prime Minister's Political Secretary, Datuk Ahmad Farhan Fauzi visited him at PPUM. Saravanan has been reportedly suffering from MND since 2021. In 1998, Saravanan brought frenzy to national pride when he ignored agonising leg cramps to cross the finish line and emerge as the men's 50-kilometre walk gold medallist at the Kuala Lumpur Commonwealth Games. His gold medal was the 10th for the national contingent at the Games, which saw Malaysia finish the edition as the fourth-best contingent overall.
