Steve Waugh on Rohit Sharma's future as Test captain: Can't be complacent or relaxed
Former Australia cricketer Steve Waugh has said that it's up to Rohit Sharma to decide if he wants to play Test cricket for India. Rohit's Test future is in question following the team's failure to qualify for the World Test Championship (WTC) Final for the first time, under his leadership. India lost back-to-back series against New Zealand and Australia, which crushed their hopes for a third consecutive appearance in the summit make matters worse for Rohit, his poor form in the red-ball format has also raised questions about his place in the team. Recently, Waugh was asked about Rohit's Test future in the Indian team and the legendary Australian captain replied that it's up to him to solve that problem. He further said that the India captain needs to look at himself in the mirror and ask if he still has the hunger to play the longest format for his country."It is totally up to him. He is the only one who can solve that problem. He has got to look himself in the mirror and say, do I still want to be captain or play for India? Am I committed? Am I putting enough time and effort into it? It is a privilege and an honour to play for your country. You can't be complacent or relax," Waugh told Furthermore, Waugh was asked about the criticism South Africa is facing for qualifying for the WTC final without playing against top teams and playing less number of matches. The legendary batter gave the example of how people complained about India playing in Dubai during ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and said that South Africa did well in the number of matches they played and are fully deserving to be in the final."There's always complaints. In Champions Trophy, India played a neutral ground in Dubai and people complained about that. You have to do what you can to make things happen. It's not a perfect situation. Some countries play a lot of Test matches, some don't play many. South Africa probably didn't play as many as other countries. They were pretty successful in what they did. I believe the two best Test playing countries are lining up in the final,' Waugh WTC 2025 final is all set to be played on from June 11 at Lord's between Australia and South Africa.
