New book on Mullaperiyar Dam
`Mullaperiyar Dam 999 + 999 – Facts unspoken and need to be known, authored by C.P. Roy, former chairman of the Mullaperiyar Samara Samithi, was released here on Thursday. Geevarghese Mar Koorilos, Metropolitan of the Niranam Diocese, unveiled the book by handing over its first copy to activists of the Mullaperiyar Samara Samithi. Paathabhedam editor Civic Chandran introduced the book.
An official statement said the book explores a range of critical and often neglected issues related to the Mullaperiyar dam including why Kerala was compelled to sign the original agreement, the State's reluctance to renew lapsed dam agreements and the continued non-implementation of the 2014 Supreme Court verdict. It also questions the 1970 agreement, which effectively extended the controversial 999-year lease.
